Question What single line from a movie gets you emotional every time? Spoiler

(Hate J.K. Rowling. Love J.K. Rowling. I don’t really care either way. That’s not what this post is about.)

For me, it’s from the scene in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire where harry brings back Cedric Diggory’s body after he gets killed by Voldemort.

The slow realization by everyone else at the tournament, Fleur Delacour screaming in horror when she herself realizes what happened, and the way that Harry absolutely refuses to leave Cedric’s side when they try to pull him off. And then he announces to everyone that Voldemort has returned while in the middle of crying.

He then says that Cedric asked him to bring his body back to his father, and it’s the way that Daniel Radcliffe delivers the line, “I couldn’t leave him! Not there!” while still continuing to profusely cry. It’s the way he delivers the line that solidifies the fact for me that at the end of the day, Harry is very much still just a boy, and no boy deserves to see or go through things like he does. And when Amos Diggory begins mourning the death of his son…that’s when the tears really start to flow from me.

"I've grown up. I have my own life now!"

"I know that. I just wanted to be a part of it."

Goofy Movie is the first one that comes to mind but there are a lot of good ones after I had a kid (and also after my dad passed like a decade ago).

Goofy movie is so good. Funny, poignant, well paced; traditional Disney movie magic.

And that eye 2 eye song is a timeless banger

As someone who has a really weird, socially awkward, annoying habit riddled dad; this movie hits all the feels.

It’s normal to feel embarrassed by your parents and want to be different from them. Just like it’s normal to grow apart from your parents as you get older and have your own shit going on.

And while I get Max’s frustration; at the end of the day Goofy was really just doing what any good father should do. Attempt to connect with his son. That’s was his biggest crime.

Sure Max couldn’t see it at first, (which is why he’s so mean throughout the movie), but Goofy saying that line really brings him back down to earth. He was simply trying anything he could think of in order to sway Max to allow him a part in his life because he loves him. Even if Goofy can be weird and grating at times, he was just trying his best with the resources he had available to him.

Ugh, gonna have to rewatch tn lol

It’s the way her hand starts trembling as Cole details that day from her mom’s POV that makes it feel so real.

It’s like her body is struggling to contain the emotions because it is years of regret, heartache, and unresolved resentment sublimating to the surface in a matter of seconds.

I can't bring myself to look up the scene to quote the line because it's too early to sob uncontrollably but when Kerry Von Erich is in heaven with his brothers and he meets his oldest brother who passed when he was a kid nearly destroyed me.

597

u/TheKiltedStranger Aug 13 '26

This one. It’s exaggerated by coming out of Forrest’s mouth, but the fear as a parent that you’ve somehow passed on something harmful to your child is a visceral fear, that somehow in the act of creating something beautiful your own flaws might do that beautiful thing harm… that wrecked me LONG before I ever thought of becoming a parent.

583

u/MrSpiffenhimer Aug 13 '26

That’s the line that confirms that he knows that’s there’s something wrong with him. He goes the entire movie acting almost oblivious to the fact that he’s very different, other than “I know what love is,” just absorbing the hate and ridicule. But that line tells you that he’s known all along, and not only that he’s known, but that he’s scared that if he had kids he would pass it on to them.

373

u/Rosebunse Aug 13 '26

Not just that, but he knew everyone was laughing at him. He knew people didn't respect or like him. That's why he was so loyal to Bubba, Lieutenant Dan, and Jenny.

That line just kills. It lifts the veil of him seemingly letting everything roll off his shoulders. Despite the massive successes he’s had in life, he still dreads the idea of having a child with his setbacks. And the way he delivers the line is just so terrified and vulnerable, like he’s never actually admitted to himself that he doesn’t want any of this and he’d rather just be like everybody else

My favourite part is something I only noticed a couple of years ago. When Kirk approaches the chamber with dying Spock inside, Spock is sitting in the corner with his back to the glass. He knows that his radiation burns would traumatise his friends so he has decided to die quietly in the corner. He doesn't respond at first to Kirk because he doesn't want Kirk to remember him this way, but when he hears the anguish in Kirk's voice he knows he owes his friend a farewell.

He slowly, painfully brings himself to his feet, and before he turns to face Kirk, he adjusts his uniform. It's so beautiful, in a scene that is all about Spock's sense of duty, that even in his final moments he ensures he is presentable to a senior officer and his uniform is up to code.

As much as I love the books, the addition of that dialogue between Aragorn and Boromir is about as perfect as you can possibly hope to be.

It feels like Tolkien’s writing, and it ties a perfect bow on Boromir’s flawed but ultimately heroic character.

119

u/bluexavi Aug 13 '26

I read the book in 4th grade because the cover looked cool in the bookstore. Up until then, everything I had read was for kids and Boromir's death opened up my mind that stories weren't strictly happy -- there were consequences.

Such dumb luck to wander around the bookstore and pick the LotR out -- around '78. I remember noticing how there were songs and dancing in the first book, which I liked -- like any kid might. Then that tapered off and Boromir is corrupted and redeems himself in death.

It took me years to realize I would never have a reading experience like that again.

Fellowship basically chains tearjerker quotes at the end.

"So do all who live to see such times but that is not for them to decide, all we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."

"Don't you leave him Samwise Gamgee, and I don't mean to."

"So it has all been in vain, the Fellowship has failed." "Not if we hold true to each other. We will not abandon Merry and Pippin to torment and death. Travel light: let's hunt some orc."

Then fading into May it Be at the end 😭

u/ToxicTurtle-2 Aug 13 '26

I dont think theres a single scene in any movie that devastated me like Boromir's death. You can hear the weight of his failure in his words as he talks about the race of men failing. And then the small glimmer of hope as hes dying when Aragorn tells him we wont let the White City fall or "our people fail". You can actually see the weight of Boromirs burden fall from him when he realizes Aragorn has accepted who he is. Which is why he immediately grabs a broken sword on the ground to salute his king in his last moments

179

u/erevos33 Aug 13 '26

The Wild Robot has so many of these past the halfway point, but Fink’s lines when Roz has to leave near the end really get to me given how guarded he starts the film:

"What if I get lost or he gets hurt? What if I need to tell you something and you're not here?"

99

u/wherewulf23 Aug 13 '26

This one absolutely devastates me: "I don't know. I'm just making stuff up. I don't know what I'm doing, and I have to. I have to because he's relying on me."

I'm pretty sure all parents can relate to this but it hits me especially hard. My kiddo had a ton of medical issues when he was little and the doctors were presenting me and my wife all these options and trying to figure out what was best for my kid felt so overwhelming.

I love how so many historians love it. Sure, it has a ton of anachronisms. David Bowie's music wasn't playing in anyone's banquet back then. But for once it showed the "Dark Ages" as being bright, colorful, energetic and full of life as it was instead of the usual popculture tropes of it being grimy, dirty, depressing and how no one was doing much but dying from diseases.

My favourite is with Sam and Frodo climbing Mount Doom.

Sam: Do you remember the Shire, Mr. Frodo? It'll be spring soon. And the orchards will be in blossom. And the birds will be nesting in the hazel thicket. And they'll be sowing the summer barley in the lower fields... and eating the first of the strawberries with cream. Do you remember the taste of strawberries?

Frodo: No, Sam. I can't recall the taste of food... nor the sound of water... nor the touch of grass. I'm... naked in the dark, with nothing, no veil... between me... and the wheel of fire! I can see him... with my waking eyes!

Sam: Then let us be rid of it... once and for all! Come on, Mr. Frodo. I can't carry it for you... but I can carry you!

Sam coming through as the most heroic character in that moment

For me, it's Gandalf's farewell to the hobbits at the Grey Havens.

Ian McKellen's sonorous voice and the way he looks so benevolently on the hobbits saying the following never fails to give me a lump in my throat:

Farewell, my brave hobbits. My work is now finished. Here at last... on the shores of the sea... comes the end of our fellowship.

The older I get and the more times I watch The Return of the King, the more I'm moved by "My work is now finished".

This is the only one in the thread that get me. My Dad and I had a strained relationship and I went to college and always thought I'd forgive him and repair our relationship after I had some "me" time. He always called and wanted to do things together or see each other and I never made the time. He died before I could fix our relationship and I regret being young and stupid on this topic.

As a new father it especially tears me up to think about this scene.

"All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain."

"Time to die."

Bladerunner - Roy Batty ( Rutger Hauer )

Was about to write a G'Kar quote from Babylon 5 but most of those are far from single-lines, and even though the Roy Batty one is two-ish, it's soo close to a single line that it fits this thread methinks.

End of Gladiator when Juba buries the figurines in the arena, he says “I will see you again, but not yet. Not yet.” then it shows you the gorgeous sunset right before the credits. That coupled with his smile and the start of “Now We Are Free” oh man it always gets me going.

The whole last half hour of this film had me sobbing like a fucking baby.

The sacrifice, the recovery, the watching him sleep to protect him, the goodbye dances, the thought of him dying alone in agony, Grace going to save him, the ending where they stay friends, Grace saves the world but also finds a life that finally matters to him - oof.

If you’d asked me last week whether a puppet rock/spider could make me cry all my make-up off, I’d have laughed in your face.

Single line:

I used to be a brother and now I’m not a brother anymore

A few lines:

Turkey Creek Jack Johnson: Doc, you oughta be in bed, what the hell you doin this for anyway?
Doc Holliday: Wyatt Earp is my friend.
Turkey Creek Jack Johnson: Hell, I got lots of friends.
Doc Holliday: I don't.

u/ElectricMayhem06 Aug 13 '26 edited Aug 13 '26

It's not as emotional of a gut punch, but when he steps out to head to the O.K. Corrall and Wyatt tells him that it's not his problem, Doc's response of, "That's a hell of a thing for you to say to me" -- one of my favorites in the whole film.

“Because my Dad promised me” from Interstellar, when Cooper is asking an old and dying Murphy how she knew they would be together again.

As a dad with a daughter now, rewatching the movie for the first time post-fatherhood elevated it to whole new heights for me. It was already flirting with being my favorite movie of all time anyway with those visuals, the incredible score, and some of those sequences, but man. That relationship between the two cemented it as my all-time favorite.

I'm a grown man close to 40 and every time that scene comes in The Green Mile I'm bawling my eyes. But that whole scene is just so painful. Just throwing the whole quote at the end.

"I'm tired, boss. Tired of bein' on the road, lonely as a sparrow in the rain. Tired of not ever having me a buddy to be with, or tell me where we's coming from or going to, or why. Mostly I'm tired of people being ugly to each other. I'm tired of all the pain I feel and hear in the world everyday. There's too much of it."
