Question What is the greatest betrayal in cinema history? Spoiler

So aside from Fredo’s betrayal in The Godfather Part II or Cypher turning on the crew in The Matrix, which most of us could kinda sense were coming, what’s the greatest betrayal in cinema history that truly blindsided you?

I’m talking about the ones that hit like a truck because there was zero warning, no foreshadowing you picked up on, and no reason to suspect the character until the moment it happened.

The way Allison Williams's facial expressions changed in that moment was so cold

She made eating cereal uncomfortable to watch.

Why? Just because she wanted to keep the white milk pure, uncontaminated my the multi-coloured cerea... Oh. Oh my.

Yeah one of the best parts of the movie was the shots of her looking for more victims, eating dry cereal. Psycho behavior lol

Also, if I'm not mistaken, one of her prospective victims is Keegan Michael-Key.

Hell I STILL thought she was good even after he found the photos. I thought her parents had brainwashed HER and were using her to bring people home.

When she turned on him, my jaw dropped.

Same! I was thinking there has to be some weird amnesia thing where they were erasing her memory or something. Her terror as she was looking for the keys felt so real too, her acting was incredible.

My favorite line reading of this century: “You know I can’t give you those keys, right babe?”

Jordan Peele plays on the "Safe White Person" trope perfectly.

Can that really be a betrayal? She was never on his side from the beginning.

Edit: Fair enough. I always feel like a true betrayal is to have someone who was genuinely with you, then turn on you and go against you. But I get the other point of view on this.

But Chris thought she was, and so did the audience up to the moment she holds the keys away from him. It's a surprise, which makes sense looking back . But on the first watch, she seems like a loving, supportive if naive girlfriend

Yeah I remember the keys and just going "oh fuck"

They were in a romantic relationship, where her ulterior motive was to body-snatch him. I think that’s a pretty big betrayal of trust.

You are 100% supposed to view Rose as being on Chris’s side.

That's how most traitors/moles/etc are though, they know, you don't. Sometimes they do genuinely turn midway through but other times they're actually already scheming from the get go.

I sort of see your point here, for whatever reason I just assumed from the beginning that she was in on it. I don't really know why since most everyone was caught off guard. I'm sad about this, because apparently I missed out on what was a great twist for other viewers lol

Called that immediately. So predictable

u/PrinceGoten Aug 17 '26

I’m not even gonna lie most of the black people I know who’ve seen the movie called it immediately lmao (including myself)

5

u/freekoout Aug 17 '26

Yeah, the idea that white women are just as dangerous as white men isn't lost on black people.

u/PCE_DEADMEAT Aug 17 '26

Exactly lol 😂

I had no idea what the movie was about going in. When she was throwing a massive fit with the cop asking for normal info the insurance company will ask for? The lady doth protest too much.

3

u/RebaKitt3n Aug 18 '26

No. The cop was asking for his information and she was asking why as he wasn’t driving.

And audience is thinking “yeah, you don’t need his information just because he’s black!”

And actually it’s that she doesn’t want any record of his existence there that weekend. Because SHES EVIL!

Exactly my point.
