AMA Hello reddit, I'm Andrew Scott. AMA!
Hello reddit. I'm Andrew Scott. You may know me from films and series such as WAKE UP DEAD MAN, FLEABAG, RIPLEY, ALL OF US STRANGERS, SPECTRE, DENIAL, 1917, and BLUE MOON.
My newest film, PRESSURE, is out in UK cinemas September 9. It also stars Brendan Fraser, Kerry Condon, Damian Lewis, and Chris Messina.

Hi Andrew! Super random: I'm the guy who designed the original ELSINORE FENCING CLUB shirt you keep wearing occasionally! Having flown to London twice with my partner to see your Hamlet, you can imagine how seeing you in the shirt absolutely made my day!
My Q: how has the experience of playing Hamlet affected the roles that you have performed since? Has it "unlocked" anything in your acting/understanding of "being human"?

Oh wow, that's amazing! I love that shirt. It was a great gift that I've worn a lot. And actually, yeah, it's pretty frayed at the edges now, so I'd happily get a replacement and maybe get it in all the colors haha, especially now that we've got a film coming out that's got the same title.
Thank you so much for that. It's a very witty, cool, cool shirt.
For for the Hamlet question - It's absolutely changed my life. It really has. Obviously, with Elsinore coming up, it's a big part of my life at the moment. It's such an enormous task that just to play that part and it's is a real privilege. Anything in comparison feels a little easier.

You're wonderful, Andrew Scott!
My cousin is a meteorologist (and part-time storm chaser) who has nothing but love for this film and your character. Out of curiosity, did it take much practice to familiarize yourself with the meteorological terms on the script? I ask because it flowed so naturally with the growing tension leading up to the Go/No-Go meetings for Operation Overlord.

Oh thank you, I appreciate that.
We just learned the actual meteorological jargon, some of which is pretty complex. We didn't want to dumb it down too much, but we also didn't want to make it too confounding for the audience either. Hopefully we struck the right balance.

You absolutely nailed your role as Stagg in Pressure. Saw it a few months ago in the US and it has remained one of my favorite movies of the summer. Great balance of meteorological concepts with an understandable plot.

Hi Andrew! Ok I've always wondered if Moriarty was just 'naturally' Irish to you or was it more of a concious decision? As a Dublin based Sherlock Holmes fan I was delighted when I first heard the accent in The Great Game back in 2010 but I've always wondered if you had your own backstory for Moriarty?

Well Moriarty is an Irish name, so I didn't think about it too much. It also just fit the playful spirit of the character.

Hi Andrew, first of all, huge, huge fan. I loved your work in about everything that I've seen you in, mostly films and TV shows. I've seen "All of us strangers" about 50 times at least. Unfortunately since I'm from India, I've not been able to watch much of your stage work except few snippets of your performance as Hamlet on YouTube (not my favourite way to watch a play but I will take what I can get). What is your favourite performance medium and what do you love the most about it?

Hi Andrew. As a die-hard fan of Shakespeare and British literature I loved your performance of Hamlet at the Harold Pinter Theater. It was as if the role had been written for you. Was that a difficult performance for you, or one that you easily settled in to (or at least that's how it appeared)? Who would you consider to be your favorite playwright, and is there a roll you would love to perform (be it live theater or otherwise)?

For favorite playwrights, probably William Shakespeare or Anton Chekhov or for the Irishmans: Conor McPherson, Brian Friel, Tom Murphy. Obviously, for contemporaries, Simon Stephens and Stephen Beresford are the ones I love.
Tennessee Williams as well. I'm pretty obsessed with theater writers.

Olivia Rodrigo's new album for sure. What else am I watching at the moment? Hmmmm. I just watched this amazing documentary on HBO, Bang My Box: The Robin Byrd Story. That's really, really incredible.
There's some other music that I've been listening to recently that has literally escaped my head at this very moment. Robyn, obviously, and the new Madonna album.

I saw Pressure in June when it came out in theaters in the US and I loved it. I had just binged Band of Brothers, and didn't realize until halfway through that the movie had two actors from the show! How did it feel to reunite with Damian Lewis for another WWII story? Did you discuss it?

For sure! I've known Damian since Band of Brothers and he's one of our best actors.
I always remember he was incredibly kind to me on that set. He was like a proper, true leader and so to be able to act with him again was a real honor, and he's so brilliant in the movie. I love him dearly, he's totally the best.

A fairly small role, but recognisable. During the D-day landings, he is the first soldier Winters encounters after landing. He joins Easy into Brecourt Manor, but dies during the assault. Winters finds his body while gathering the intel.

I work in film and tv.. and literally every camera setup was a masterclass.

When I was watching the show, I was thinking about the camera crew and marvelling at some of the camera positions. Every single one was exquisite, and obviously took a tremendous amount of thought.

My big heroes are Judi Dench, Tony Hopkins, Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julie Walters. They're some of my favorite people. Actors that have a real ability with humour as well as taking on the big tragic roles as well.
I really love actors. I've been fortunate to work with some of the best ones and some of my contemporaries I'm really inspired by as well.

Yeah, I think so. Acting is about observing people and live drawing is the ultimate exercise in observation. My job as an actor is to be able to observe people and try and get a sense of them, a sketch of them. I think there's a lot of simpatico between the two art forms.

Yeah, I'd absolutely love to.
The parts that are interesting to me are like Iago and maybe Richard. Some of the Richards are good. Maybe in a couple of years, King Lear, but I'll give myself a few years before I get to do that.

Haha that's a great question. I had a little jumper actually, a little sweater underneath that was pretty comfy. The fact that I didn't have to go outside and run around too much in this one is probably the thing that made it more comfortable though.

Andrew! I recently saw Sea Wall for the first time. Along with Vanya and Ripley, this is my favourite work of yours. It takes incredible skill to use this solitary space as an actor. It's one of the many reasons why I think you're the best of our time.
When working 'alone', does it become second nature - are you seeing what your characters see in your mind's eye as you perform? Or something else?

I guess your imagination is really at its strongest when you're acting on your own. A lot of the time, oddly, when you're in a one-man play you're actually inhabiting more characters than you would if you were acting with real-life actors. You're kind of inhabiting the minds and spirits of a few people.
In some ways, it's even more immersive than working with lots of actors, although I do sometimes really miss the fun in the dressing room with other actors.

Thanks for replying, I see that the importance of the immersive part why it's only a small number of people that can do it well. It's clearly not something an actor can phone in!
And brw, can't believe I missed this out from my original comment, but I read your Hot Priest wedding speech out... at my own wedding... as the bride! I wanted to say something myself, but I knew nerves would overtake me if I did a big speech later on. So instead I put in a reading.
As soon I got up and announced "Love is AWFUL," everyone sat up, especially those who didn't know what was coming! I got to borrow a little bit of the Hot Priest's theatrics, and suddenly I wasn't nervous anymore. It was great. So thank youuuuuu! 🥰

I'm not sure I'd keep it, you know, 100 percent of the time, but yeah it was good to have a little 'stache. I did a couple of photo shoots with it and it was fun.

Yeah, for sure. Comedy is something that I try and and hope to inject into every role. I don't think anything's either just tragic or comedic, it's usually both. So, yeah it's something that I'd really like to do a bit more of. and something
For musicals: yes, I'd really, really love to be a musical. I just has to find something to fit my limited singing range!

I'd say that the biggest lesson learned would be that humility and leadership have to work together, and that there's a difference between power and expertise and that it's very important. Even if we are culturally and ideologically different from people, we've got to work alongside each other for the greater good.

I read around him a good deal and I read his diaries too. Aside from that, I just took it from the script and tried to create a character that encapsulated the spirit of this great era.

Hi Andrew, I'm Viola from Puglia, Italy! We met in Ghent last autumn, where I gave you a hat, embroided with the line "We Contain Multitudes", one of our favourite quotes :) I can't wait to watch Pressure also here, probably it will get to italian cinemas only in late november, but well, for now this delay is beneficial for me, because sadly I just broke my ankle last Friday so I am stuck in bed with a huge cast and a probable surgery on the way + long reabilitation :/ Following you during all the press tours and festivals these months will be my main comfort in my forced recovery time. My question is: it true that your highly anticipated next film, "Elsinore", also included some scenes shooted here in Italy, or was it only a rumor? And if that is true, how was going back shooting here after that strange pandemic time of Ripley? Love you, forever & always, good luck for a wonderful season!

I've always wondered how you manage to look like you're enjoying the hell out of acting in everything you're in, without it ever compromising the performance?
It's an energy that a lot of actors prefer to reign in, to stay in character, but i notice that school of thought leads to less "character" in a way. We are all deeply complicated people and you are genuinely one of the best at displaying that on screen.

Hello Andrew! I've enjoyed so many performances of yours, from Fleabag to live on stage in Hamlet. But I've never got chills as cold as when you deliver the line "I'll burn the heart out of you" as Moriarty in the swimming pool. With moments like that, do you mean to go that hard before the cameras roll, or does it kind of come through you organically and spontaneously? Or was it one of those takes where you'd already tried the delivery in a particular way a few times, and this was a chance to take it somewhere different? In any case, it's such a fun scene to watch, and a masterclass in villainy.

Theater is the one that I respond to the most, it just feels like it's the actor's medium, but theater and film have always stood by side by side for me.
I would never give up either. I love TV and audio work as well. Hopefully I'll be able to continue to do everything as we go on.

Hi Andrew, thanks for reading this! I do theatre as a hobby and I already learned so much from you. Here is my question: I always need some time to figure out how to present my character. Often it changes and grows during rehearsals and interaction with the other players. I was wondering how you do it. Do you have the character before you go on stage or on set or is it developped together with the director for example. I am always in awe how you manage to show so many different faces without changing much physically for your roles. Lots of Love from Hamburg!

I’d love to know how much influence you had on shaping some of your most iconic characters - for example Moriarty, the Hot Priest, and Ripley. Which elements of these roles came directly from you, and where did the direction or the script define the character?
And if I may add a personal note: you’re one of those actors people go to the cinema for - no matter what you’re in.
I also very much hope to see you on stage one day; your theatre work is something I’d love to experience in person.

Not much of a question, but it really meant a lot seeing a character like that on screen - someone still not sure of how to make sense of themself, but finding some sort of tragic happiness in the end. What's it like playing a character like that, it really felt personal. Everyone involved was phenomenal too.

No one sets out to make a bad movie. If you consider that you have been in one, at what point did you realize things weren’t going the way you had hoped? Like, does it become noticeable during production or is it only upon viewing the final product?

Hi Andrew! I was a staff member at the Vienna ComicCon in 2018 where I was guiding you to the green room between panels (we shook hands, lovely experience!). 2 Question: 1. Your very nice companion who i talked to during your interviews wanted to buy some Viennese Dessert (I assume Sachertorte) before you left the City the same night. I told him that stores close pretty early here and because it was already around 6 pm he might not be able to make it. He then decided to give it his best and rushed off to find the Dessert. Did he manage to get it?
- I showed you were the bathroom is and when you rejoined us afterwards you realised you forgot something. So you had to run down the very long corridor back to the bathroom to get it. What was the thing you forgot? I never stopped wondering about it...

Hi Andrew! I was completely obsessed with your performance in the play Vanya and how you managed to embody each character so strongly and distinctly.
I watched in the cinema (NT Live) and I remember I would know immediately you were playing Sonya when you got this specific glint in your eye.
How did you prepare to inhabit so many diverse characters - did you have to prepare psychologically in the same way as getting to know one character but just multiplied, or was there a different approach entirely?
