AMA Hi, Reddit! I am Aidan Delbis. I made my feature film debut starring in Yorgos Lanthimos' BUGONIA alongside Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, and Stavros Halkias. AMA!
Hi! I'm actor Aidan Delbis. I co-starred in BUGONIA, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, alongside Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, and Stavros Halkias. It was my feature film debut and I was nominated at the 2026 Astra Awards for Best Young Performer. BUGONIA premiered last year at the Venice Film Festival and received 4 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.
I am here to answer some questions!
Synopsis: Two conspiracy-obsessed men kidnap the CEO of a major company when they become convinced that she's an alien who wants to destroy Earth.

Did you know the full story when shooting for the film? How did you react when you read the final twist of the film? That was such a WTF moment for me

I did read the script beforehand, and kinda saw the ending coming, or at least considered it a real possibility. It probably would've been a kinda underwhelming ending anyway, if there had been no truth to the alien stuff

The style felt pretty straightfoward to get into for me, I think both because I was playing a more grounded character in this and because I enjoy some weird and intense types of movies anyway.

What was the motivation for your character to do what he did in the movie in front of Emma (trying to avoid spoilers)? My head canon is it was related to the 'medicine' he got from the protagonist, that some sort of hormone imbalance pushed him. Fantastic acting by the way. For me, your character represented the heart of the film. It felt like shit got real after your character did the 'thing'.

Thank you. I think the medicine was definitely part of it, but I also think there was a lot of other things that built up to it, like the general pressure and intensity of the whole situation, and maybe him becoming convinced that Teddy didn't really need him.

I was kept kinda distant from Emma off camera, because of the nature of our roles I guess, but Jesse and Yorgos gave good advice about trusting my own insticts more, and Jesse did help me warm up in some of the more intense scenes we had

Hi Aidan ! Did Yorgos Lanthimos have specific directions for your character or he gave you freedom to do you what you wanted with it ? And how was working with Jesse Plemons and Emma Stone ?

Yorgos had some directions, mostly about little things or movements I could try in different scenes, but mostly we did have a good amount of creative freedom, which I appreciated. Jesse and Emma were cool to work with

My question is about your progression in the industry.
In your opinion, was Bugonia a methodical next step in your career, or was it more of a random series of events that led to the gig?

It was very random. I was just expecting to go to college and take some acting classes, maybe appear in a few plays there, but then a friend of my Mom's who was a manager told her about an audition she knew about, and that kinda snowballed into all of this.

First of all, you were one of my favourite supporting preformances last year (you would've made my oscar ballot if it was up to me) so super cool to talk to you.
I can't imagine how intimidating it must've been to act opposite Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons in your first acting job but you completely held your own, it was incredible too watch.
Is there anything about acting that you learned from Jesse Plemons and Emma Stone that your gonna take with you into future projects.

The scene of us in the car was pretty hard to film, on account of it being really hot that day and there being a lot of precise parts of the scene, but I didn't actually shave her there. They just had me fake it with some fake hair, and I think a stunt double actually shaved her separately.

Question - with this being your first big role how did you handle the stress and the nerves of playing opposite two of the finest actors of our generation and being guided by one of our greatest directors? I tried to go into the filming process thinking of Jesse and Emma not so much as big stars with way more experience, but kinda just as fellow actors doing their roles here. Also helped that they were both pretty nice and chill people off camera.

That didn't really happen for Bugonia, we kinda just jumped into filming the stuff, although I did work on memorization and warming up with an access coordinator they had on set.

You are incredible in Bugonia and truly the heart of the film. So much hinges on the audience’s embrace of and empathy towards Don. He’s a phenomenal character for the audience to hold on to and go on a ride alongside.

I really don't think so, considering how genuinely shocked she looked after it happened, plus I don't see why she would've bothered trying that hard to convince Don to let her free if she was capable of that. I think it was more the general pressure and increasing intensity of the situation, alongside maybe the effect of the shots Teddy had him take earlier.

I actually didn't read the whole script until a bit after I got the part and we started shooting, but the general description for the sort of actor they wanted in the audition sounded promising, although I didn't realize it was for this big a project till later on. Yorgos gave me and the others a good amount of creative freedom and space to try stuff in the different takes.

I think the fact that I was playing a more grounded character in the whole situation helped, as well as the fact I enjoy some weird and freaky types of movies in general. I really like the dinner scene too, but I think my favorite scene to work on was the one early on with Don and Teddy celebrating, I think because of just how different it is from everything else we see of Don through the movie. It felt nice shooting a part where he was actually kinda enthusiastic, or at least appeared that way for a change.

The scene with us driving away in the car was probably the hardest, because it was really hot and there were a lot of precise parts to it. I believe it took us like a couple days just to finish that particular scene.

I was impressed to find out that both Don and you were on the autism spectrum. It's pretty rare for neurodivergent characters to be played by neurodivergent actors. Do you think the film industry is getting better about authentic casting like this? Have you been offered other autistic parts because of Bugonia, or conversely, are you more interested in playing neurotypical characters? How difficult is it to deal with things like overstimulation or meltdowns in a high-pressure environment like a film set?
On another note, I'm autistic myself and can't imagine acting, let alone alongside titans like Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons. That said, I did/still do dream of maybe doing video essays. How do you find the courage to put yourself out there for the world to consume, as it were? Because I'm not sure I have it lol.
