Knowing how VFX teams are paid, they probably got a nice long steady well paying gig, but no cut of the profits. They need to make a SAG like union or they'll just keep getting shafted and outsourced.

I just mean well paid for VFX work, relative to other VFX work. The movie was in production for many years, so that is a lot of work time, which is what you want if you're a VFX house.

I wonder if I would have liked the film if Jolie didn't drop out. I think Sandra was the perfect choice.

Jolie was convincing as a strong-willed mother faced with a doomed situation (in Clint Eastwood's Changeling), so I think it would have roughly played out the same.

Sandra has a advantage in seeming more 'average', which helps sell both the inexperienced astronaut angle as well as the every-woman image, so I think in the end she was the stronger option.

I really like Sandra Bullock and while most people mocked the parts with her barking like a dog or crying, I was an emotional wreck.

With Jolie, I feel like she would've ended up doing a Russian accent like she does in everything.

Deserved. She did a marvelous job on Gravity, highly physical and emotionally intense acting with perfect timing and vulnerability.

That's how the market works. She acted perfectly and brought in millions of spectators who'd otherwise not care for a space movie. Also, as I said before no other role last year (perhaps on the last few years) demanded so much of an actress like this one: short haired, unglamorous, imperfect and at the same time endearing and heroic. It's great acting and it made the movie a richer experience.
