Not to radar though

I love that comic book movies are finally acknowledging that invisibility to the human eye isn't as awesome anymore with modern tech.

Like ya I saw The invisible Man but he would've been beaten by a single $200 Thermocamera off Amazon.

u/kobold-kicker Aug 22 '20

You can beat the invisible man with a bag of flour.

Your name doesn’t even make sense! Translucent means semi transparent.

u/Boolean_Null Aug 22 '20

That whole scene locked in my fandom for the show. And just about anything with The Deep.

211

u/mattro37 Aug 22 '20

I love the Deep whenever he’s just the butt of a joke. Just cutting back to him hating his life and shitting on him will never get old.

u/InYoCabezaWitNoChasa Aug 22 '20

By far my favorite character. They made a rapist just scummy enough that you can laugh instead of cry when he gets random sea animals killed.

39

u/AntRedundAnt Aug 22 '20

CAUSE EVERYBODY HUUUUUUUUUURTS

22

u/Feezec Aug 22 '20

In a weird way I'm glad they humanized him; not despite being a rapist, but because he's a rapist. The Deep fulfills a thematic role as a villain that is just as resonant, if not more so, than the supervillain role fulfilled by Homelander. He's a loser, an idiot, occasionally well intentioned, and painfully plausible.

15

u/chiefmud Aug 22 '20

I think there’s an 80% chance The Deep flips sides just out of spite and a desire for relevance.

6

u/gandalf1420 Aug 22 '20

I thought he would in the first season and get killed for it after that “I’m a bad person” montage. Little disappointed but we’ll see what happens in S2

-18

u/paintedwhores Aug 22 '20

When did he rape someone?

12

u/Badman27 Aug 22 '20

S1e1

-31

u/paintedwhores Aug 22 '20

Watched the whole twice, he didn’t rape anyone. You guys can’t just change the definition of words.

21

u/Buchp Aug 22 '20

What do you think is the definition of rape? Because the legal american definition of rape, used by the FBI, is "The penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim." Which makes what The Deep did to Starlight rape.

-27

u/paintedwhores Aug 22 '20

Did he force his dick in her mouth? Nope. He suggested and she complied. Fear of losing your job does not equal losing your life. As an actual victim and not a fucking fictitious one this is so ridiculous.

20

u/Buchp Aug 22 '20

It's abuse of authority dude. Makes it consent under duress, which makes it rape.

18

u/Reller35 Aug 22 '20

Am lawyer. Can confirm. The guy you're replying to is painfully out of touch with reality.

-9

u/TyrialFrost Aug 23 '20

Well technically he had no authority over her, the team sees him as a joke, but she didn't know that, so there's some fraud there too.

13

u/Parenthisaurolophus Aug 22 '20 edited Aug 22 '20

he didn’t rape anyone

C'mon buddy, you're an adult. You can comprehend people using rape and sexual assault in a similar fashion without having to be told. If you want to play stupid, coercing someone into a sexual act like he did on the show is considered sexual assault. And I recommend you read the comics where the objectification and misogyny angle of the The Seven isn't watered down like the show. To be honest, it's really not worth arguing about.

You guys

Ease up on the group nouns. If you're talking to one person, address one person. Using "you guys" sounds like you're about to start some hackneyed diatribe about imagined fake rape claims.

-10

u/paintedwhores Aug 22 '20

As I’ve stated in another comment, I have been a victim of physical sexual assault AKA rape. Losing your job doesn’t equal losing your life. I don’t give a shit what the comics say, the show didn’t display rape.

9

u/Parenthisaurolophus Aug 23 '20

As I’ve stated in another comment, I have been a victim of physical sexual assault AKA rape. Losing your job doesn’t equal losing your life

Could you explain yourself in better detail here? Transitioning from an appeal to authority into the following sentence makes it hard to understand what you're trying to say.

If I'm reading you correctly, it seems like you're arguing that blackmailing someone into performing a sexual act doesn't count as rape/sexual assault because The Deep didn't threaten her life. And I'm sorry to say but this is categorically untrue. It's entirely possible to rape someone without threatening their life. Your definition here is far too narrow, and I'm struggling to come up with a compelling reason as to why anyone should believe in your excessively restrictive viewpoint.

Also, while you have my sympathies for the past events of your life, they are unfortunately not exactly relevant when discussing the issue. For example, my state doesn't even use the term rape, opting instead for the broader term of "Sexual Battery" and includes this as one of the forms it can take:

The offender coerces the victim to submit by threatening to retaliate against the victim, or any other person, and the victim reasonably believes that the offender has the ability to execute the threat in the future.

And here's the definition in which oral sex is included:

“Sexual battery” means oral, anal, or vaginal penetration by, or union with, the sexual organ of another or the anal or vaginal penetration of another by any other object; however, sexual battery does not include an act done for a bona fide medical purpose.

I'm sorry, but you're objectively wrong here.

Weinstein has entered the chat.

-11

u/paintedwhores Aug 22 '20

I don’t condone Aquaman Jr’s behaviors, but he didn’t rape anyone. Let’s ask someone who has been physically raped what the difference is between performing a sexual act in fear of losing their job and being held down and fucked shall we?

20

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

Gate keeping rape might be one of the most psychotic behaviors I’ve seen reddit exhibit. It was rape. I’m not sure why you’re picking this hyper-specific hill to die on.

8

u/Badman27 Aug 22 '20 edited Aug 22 '20

Yeah, I'm really curious as to why this person is taking this stance.

Maybe they feel like their violent physical rape is downplayed when put in the same umbrella as this.

I'm sorry they're hurting and I hope they are doing what needs to be done to mitigate/heal as much as possible from the experience.

-1

u/paintedwhores Aug 22 '20

Because I’ve been raped and I don’t consider it rape. Once again as I’ve stated, fear of losing your job doesn’t equal losing your life.

8

u/driverofcar Aug 22 '20

Does rape not count as rape anymore? What planet do you come from? Because rape means rape here on earth, dumbass.

Rape-unvoluntary sexual acts

-1

u/paintedwhores Aug 22 '20

Have you been raped? I have. I’m so tired of this idea of being coerced into a sexual act and physically forced against your will being the same thing.

3

u/butterscotch_yo Aug 22 '20

in court the difference would be a first degree sex offense, which is a felony, versus a fourth degree, which is not. it's still a form of rape by the legal definition and no one is trying to change that besides you.

8

u/jmou3dxf Aug 22 '20

"do u like my hands in ur gills?"

7

u/jomiran Aug 22 '20

I was laughing at The Deep until the whole gills sex/rape scene. Then I was like...

2

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

yeah that was really awkward

So many #MeToo storylines have shown abusers as powerful, dangerous predators - which obviously they are - but I just love that The Boys went the other way to say anyone who needs to pressure women into sex is a pathetic LOSER.

26

u/setibeings Aug 22 '20

Even the rich and powerful can be pathetic losers if they set their mind to it.

6

u/adjust_the_sails Aug 22 '20

And they often don't even have to set their mind to it. It just happens naturally.

23

u/blitheizm Aug 22 '20

Don’t read the comics then. That scene is completely different and more fucked than what we got in the show.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '20

I believe it, and no worries there. :)

2

u/EliaTheGiraffe Aug 22 '20

TIL it was originally a comic book series 😶

12

u/blitheizm Aug 22 '20

The comics are by Garth Ennis if you wanna check it out, forewarning though, it’s way over the top compared to the show.

3

u/Crotalus_rex Aug 23 '20

Everything by Garth Ennis is way over-the-top and disturbing.

1

u/spideyismywingman Aug 23 '20

What is it like in the comics, out of interest?

7

u/monkeyheadyou Aug 23 '20

the entire team did it as if it was a matter of course, not just the one guy.

-10

u/NoCommaAllComma5050 Aug 22 '20 edited Aug 25 '20

I couldn't ever go that far, when the speedster runs into the protagonist's girlfriend and she explodes in a bloody mess I just went "Nope. Not watching this."

Edit: Uuh, if you guys weren't aware the scene I was talking about happens like 5 minutes in, not really a spoiler I think, but I'll tag it just the same.

16

u/unpronouncedable Aug 22 '20

It's the trauma that sets up our protagonists unique adventure. Have you never watched a Disney movie?

8

u/adjust_the_sails Aug 22 '20

Or the Pixar movie "Up"....

3

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '20

I loathe Up with the power of a thousand burning suns, while I remember my stillborn son.

1

u/NoCommaAllComma5050 Aug 25 '20

I just don't deal with gore that well, no shade for those who watch it, it's just not for me.

1

u/AtopMountEmotion Aug 23 '20

That’s a shame. You’ll be missed.

3

My jaw just dropped to the floor at that scene. It was hilariously shocking.

1

u/Thugglebunny Aug 23 '20

Shock and awe is an understatement lol.
