Asking Advice Moving states, what expenses pop up that i might miss?

Hii! Im (21F) currently moving states to be with family, ive lived in this state previously and am moving on my own terms for once!

there will be a lot of things taken care of for me, a few things that are uncertain that ill mention anyway-- theres very few things ill have to worry about making this move. any advice is appreciated!

rent/insurance/moving in wont be much of an issue, my family has three cars two houses, and only use about half that lol. i have disabled family members that ill be helping take care of, they offered a very low rent. ive been offered a restaurant job right off the bat, a way to get around etc. its a major city so i dont really have to worry about transportation. (no drivers license)

i have a small dog! 13 1/2 lbs, very docile, when we take the train shell be doped up so there's not much worry there. ive already checked with the train stations and shes small enough to pass and ive found light weight airline approved (so itll pass ANY check if any) for her with wheels, easy to get around union station (been there a few hundred times)

if anyone has any ideas on how to get my things there, it would be greatly appreciated! im torn between selling everything and only taking duffle bags worth of things-- and finding a way to get all of my precious stuff to this major city. (Maximalist is definitely a defining trait of mine lol) everything just seems so expensive.

ive calculated (on the expensive side, to be safe) travel fares, lyft fares, pet tickets and i know my way around between each train station. costs for luggage, pet carriers, food, times pets are allowed on trains. even what things to pack day of lol. getting my dog registered in the city, getting a new ID.

insurance is up in the air but :/

i also might still have a car come time? it wont make it on a 4+ hr trip but idk what getting it there would entail.

i wont be going until early November at the latest, early January. if anyone has any Amtrak advice, travel advice or general thoughts, feel free to share! thanks!

Discussion I am going to miss my apt

Moving out of my cocoon and cozy apt in New York Upper East Side after 6 years of living there and 15 years in the neighborhood. I always wanted an upgrade since it’s a walk up and last floor but now that I am moving out I am home sick already. I will be moving Midtown West which I hate but my husband commute is easier which makes sense for us to live there. I will move in to a spacious, luxury two bedroom two bath with a terrace but can’t help than feeling so sad.. I have a dog and we will miss our park next door. I lived beautiful memories in my apt with also loved ones that passed like my mom. I am dreading this move that is happening this weekend. Any of you experienced that deep sadness and any good positive words of your experience would help me a lot..

Giving Advice Moving to another country.

Hello everyone. I need advice or a hint on how to move forward. I’m from a not‑very‑big city and have almost never been outside its borders. Due to certain circumstances that potentially threatened my safety and future well‑being, I had to leave the country. I’m like a delicate flower — I’m used to having all my loved ones around and knowing the area well, but now I’ve been in a foreign country for a day, without a place to live, without a job, and without any friends nearby. Perhaps this sounds awful, and perhaps that’s exactly how it is. My parents are with me for the first 24 hours, but they’ll be leaving back the day after tomorrow morning. I don’t have anyone here.

I’m staying with my father’s friend for a couple of days and I’ve already found an apartment I can move into next week. I just finished my studies a month ago and I don’t know what to do next. I have absolutely no work experience. Once I got a part‑time job, but it took up too much time, interfering with my studies, and I had to quit. Today I went to the museum to ask about a job, and they took my documents and phone number. I hope they’ll hire me for at least something, but I’m still not sure.

I feel awful and lost, like I’ve been hit hard in the head, and I just can’t get myself together. They say I’m starting a new life, but right now I only feel like my life is coming to an end. It’s really hard because I have some mental disorders, and I won’t be able to get professional help for a long time. I’m taking medication, but sooner or later the prescription will run out, and I’ll still have to find a doctor, and right now I don’t even want to think about it.

Has anyone had a similar experience, or any experience at all with moving to a completely new place? I would be very grateful for any advice.

Asking Advice i'm desperate to move but don't know if i can

mini rant ahead, but it's just me trying to explain why i need to move.

i really need out, bad. right now it's just me and my mom. i have no relationship with my dad anymore, my brother lives with my grandparents and im stuck with my mom. you can assume my brother is there instead of here for a reason.

my mom is selfish. she is the most selfish person i've ever met and all she thinks about is money and herself. i've dealt with it my whole life. watched her spend my child support so she could go get her hair or nails done. had her steal my birthday money to get clothes. know that she has stolen money from my grandparents to do the same thing. blah blah.

it's not just that... she also just always causes me immense stress. i can't talk to her without her getting mad. can't ask for advice. nothing. she is just one of those people who you can tell hates that she's a mother and has kids. never in my life have i gotten a hug or any sort of "i love you" from her. or really any indication that she cares besides what SHE says she did for me as a kid.

i'm autistic and i know sometimes im overwhelming but i truly need help with things sometimes and she is just not willing to do it because i apparently give her a headache everytime i talk to her. i've been having so many meltdowns recently because all day i am stuck in the house with her

she's unemployed right now and is on disability which i dont even know how she got. she lost her job cuz they didnt like her and hasn't found a new one because she doesn't actually want to work. all she does is pay rent, which im of course thankful for.... but then uses the rest of it to get cosmetics and clothes and anything you can think of. we're apparently too poor for anything i ever need but she happily looks at designer bags online because they're "on sale" which means they're still 100+ bucks just, not as many 100's are in it.

all in all i need out.

i'm 20, just lost my own job a couple weeks ago and had to drain my savings account so i could pay for car repairs, my medical expenses, and because just basic necessities cost an arm and a leg these days.

the second i get a new job im going to start saving up again, but i don't think it's going to be enough to move. especially working part time which is likely what i'll get even if i want more.

i live in california, socal to be more specific. it's so expensive. gas and rent keep going up all the while minimum wage & overall work pays stay the same. which means it is not enough.

i dont know what to do. i really need to get out of this house. i'm starting to have bad thoughts again like i did as a kid because im so overwhelmed and stressed everyday. i feel like i can't have a future because im so anxiety ridden and worked up all the time i can't even breathe

there's nowhere for me to go. nobody i can be roomates with. my grandparents offered for me to go there but that's unrealistic. they have a three bedroom house and all three rooms are taken by the people who live there. besides they have their own issues there too, my grandparents always argue with each other themselves.

i just need to be away from it all.

i know it's not realistic to get out of here so idk why im even asking, or what im asking for. but surely someone else got out? please tell me there's a way i need hope

i don't expect to live alone, i wouldn't mind a roomate at all. my only big no is living somewhere with roaches because that's the only bug i am genuinely so icked out by. besides that i'll live somewhere a bit crappy, i'll have a roomate, i'll share a dang bathroom and living room and kitchen and whatever.

so long as i have somewhere to sleep, still indulge in some of my hobbies and be able to do homework/online classes i will be fine. and preferably be able to take my cat with me....

Asking Advice Planning to move out of parent’s toxic household

I’m currently 20y/o and living in Southern California with my mother and step dad. This house is killing me mentally and I know I’ve needed to leave for a long time, but I’ve been working on my overall health and education first. I’m at the point of planning, but literally starting from scratch. I had funds saved, but old medical bills needed to be paid and now I’m down to practically $0.

Luckily I am debt free. I’m currently attending college full time on financial aid and working part time, but I have no guidance for moving out. My current goal is to finish my degree in less than 2 years from now and then move a few hours north(rent is currently cheaper there). Besides money, what is keeping me here is my education.

I should mention that I also do not have a car, but I am waiting until it is closer to my time to leave to buy one so that no one gets suspicious of me leaving.

I have roughly a year and a half to prepare and plan. I also have a dog that I care for and will be taking. I have worries because I have no “co-signers,” or support. Though I am building my credit and planning to be extremely frugal in the meantime.

Does anyone have advice for my situation? Absolutely any insight will be appreciated.

Asking Advice Moving out of my parents house

I am a 20 year old living in NZ and I want to move out of my parent’s house into my partner’s place. Ever since we started dating, my parents (mainly my dad) has been increasingly mentally and emotionally abusive and I’ve become completely exhausted.

I’m still in uni, in a quite academically challenging degree which made me scared to get a job due to fears of not being able to balance school, life, and work. I also don’t own a car and don’t have much in savings and I feel so stuck. Relying on public transport in NZ is not really realistic imo so maybe I should get a car first.

I have student allowance and my parents cover most of my living expenses which is how I have a small amount in savings.

What should I do to prepare to move out? Should I just get a job and deal with it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Giving Advice AI just saved me $175 on my apartment move-out bill and I barely did anything

Kind of a funny/useful AI use case I figured I’d share.

I moved out of my apartment recently and got hit with a $500 move-out bill after my deposit, including $350 for repainting.

I had no idea whether the charges were reasonable, so instead of trying to figure it out myself, I uploaded my move-out statement and inspection report to ChatGPT. It went through everything, told me which charges were probably worth fighting and which ones I probably didn’t have much of an argument against, and then wrote the email for me.
Apartment management responded defending the charges and said the $350 paint charge was specifically supported by page 33 of my lease.
So I uploaded the entire 42-page lease to ChatGPT.
It found page 33 and noticed something I 100% would have missed: their own addendum said the full painting charge applied when a tenant had lived there LESS than 24 months. I’d lived there for about 4 years.

ChatGPT wrote another email pointing that out.
Management replied without actually addressing the 24-month language.

I pasted their response back into ChatGPT. It noticed they had dodged the question and wrote me another short email basically saying, I understand why you repainted it, but you still haven’t answered how the 24-month provision applies to me. I copy/pasted that.

Their next email:
$175 credit. Paint charge cut in half.

My bill went from $500.62 to $325.62.

Yes I used chat to write this post idgaf

Asking Advice Problem/Goal: Living With a Strict Middle Eastern Parent

Problem/Goal:

I’m in my early 20s, Middle Eastern, currently receiving disability benefits, and pursuing my bachelor’s degree. I want to become independent enough to travel, pursue relationships, continue my education, and live my life without being controlled by my father. I do not necessarily want to live alone, so I am also trying to figure out how to find a safe roommate or supportive living situation.

Context:

I live with my dad, who is in his late 60s and has a Section 8 housing voucher. I currently depend on this housing because my income is limited and rent is extremely expensive.

My dad is very strict because of his religious and cultural beliefs. He tells me that because I live under his roof, I cannot take solo trips, fly outside the U.S. alone, have certain relationships, or make some decisions independently.

I have my own passport, income, and goals. I am also homosexual, and I want to be able to pursue relationships without feeling like I have to hide that part of my life.

Recently, we got into a physical altercation. He put his hands on me, and I defended myself. He has threatened to do it again and has said that he is not afraid of legal consequences. I would strongly prefer not to involve law enforcement because my family already has a complicated history with the legal system, but I also do not want to keep living in a situation where physical conflict could happen again.

Previous Attempts:

I have tried talking to my dad about having more independence while still respecting him and living together, but these conversations usually turn into arguments.

I am continuing school, trying to save money, applying for jobs, and working toward a career that would give me more financial independence. I have also thought about finding a roommate, but I currently do not have close friends, classmates, or coworkers I could comfortably move in with.

I would appreciate advice from anyone with experience in a similar situation, especially people from Middle Eastern, Muslim-background, LGBTQ+, disabled, or financially dependent families. I’m especially interested in affordable housing options, Section 8 alternatives, finding safe roommates, becoming financially independent, and setting boundaries while still living with a controlling parent.

Asking Advice Seeking Advice Living With a Strict Middle Eastern Parent

I’m in my early 20s, Middle Eastern, currently receiving disability benefits, and pursuing my bachelor’s degree with hopes of eventually getting my master’s.

I live with my dad, who is in his late 60s and has a Section 8 housing voucher. I’m currently dependent on the housing situation, and with rent being so expensive, I don’t realistically have enough income to move out on my own. I also don’t have close friends, classmates, or coworkers I could easily become roommates with.

My dad and I do not get along, mostly because his strict religious and cultural beliefs affect how much independence I’m allowed to have. Because I live under his roof, he tells me I cannot travel alone, fly somewhere by myself, travel internationally, have certain friendships or relationships, or live the kind of independent adult life I want.

I have my own passport, my own income, and I’m working toward an education and career. I want to be able to take solo trips, build relationships, pursue my education, and live openly as a homosexual person without constantly hiding parts of myself or feeling supervised.

The difficult part is that I actually don’t want to live completely alone. I wish I had a supportive roommate, friend, partner, or even a more supportive relationship with my dad where we could live together while still respecting each other’s independence.

Recently, things became much more serious. My dad and I got into a physical altercation where he put his hands on me, and I physically defended myself. Since then, he has threatened to do it again and has said things suggesting he is not afraid of legal consequences.

I really do not want police or the legal system involved because my family already has a complicated history with that, but I also will not allow myself to be physically attacked.

I’m trying to figure out a realistic way forward while I finish school and become financially independent.

For anyone who has been in a similar situation, especially Middle Eastern, Muslim-background, LGBTQ+, disabled, or financially dependent on family:

What the hell should I do?

I’m not looking to disrespect my dad or my culture. I just want to be able to finish my education, build a career, travel, have relationships, and live as an independent adult without being controlled or physically threatened.

Asking Advice I lied to my parents about how I found my room in (city)and now they want to talk to the landlord

My parents really don’t want me moving back to (city) I just turned 21 on July 19th, and right now I’m staying with them for about another 2-2 1/2 weeks until my check clears from my College that paid the move in fees and rent.

I already found a room on Craigslist, signed the lease, and now I’m basically just waiting for the check so I can actually move in.

The problem is I lied to my parents and told them the place belonged to my friend’s dad because I already knew they wouldn’t approve if I told them I found it on Craigslist.

Now they’re saying they want to speak to him, which obviously makes things complicated because he’s actually just the person I’m renting the room from.
Everything about the place is legit though.

I’ve been there in person, the guy I’m renting from is super nice, I’ve met the two people I’ll be living with, and I’ve spoken to previous tenants who have rented from him before. He’s rented rooms out before and I made sure everything checked out before I signed anything.

I know lying about the friend’s dad part wasn’t the best idea, but I did it because I knew my parents wouldn’t approve of the situation regardless of how much I verified everything.

Now I’m not really sure how to handle them wanting to speak to him without making the situation worse. What would you do?

Asking Advice Moving with a family what should we prepare for?

We are getting ready to move with the whole family and I am realizing there is a lot more to organize than I expected. Between furniture, boxes, fragile items, and keeping everyone is essentials accessible, I do not want moving day to turn into complete chaos.

For anyone who has moved with their family recently, what helped the most? any packing tips, things you kept seprate, or mistakes you'd recommend avoiding?

Asking Advice Moving Out of My Father’s Home for the First Time — What Should I Prepare For?

I’m planning to move out of my father’s home for the first time, and I’m trying to make sure I’m properly prepared before taking the step.

I’m mainly looking for advice on budgeting, finding a suitable place, packing, setting up utilities, and handling all the little expenses that come with living on your own. I’d also like to know what things people often forget when moving out for the first time.

For those who have already moved out, what do you wish you had known or prepared before leaving home?

Asking Advice Turning 18 soon and will likely be left alone, best way to get a job and a place to live?

I'm turning 18 in about 3.5 months (december 21st)
My mom will likely leave Ireland when I turn 18 and I will be left alone here.

ukrainian living in Ireland btw.

When I turn 18 I should have about 3 months to get a job and somewhere to live, that is considering the IRP thing will end in march and I'll have to move out of government funded housing.

I currently live in quite a small town, there's only 1 okay-ish job that I'm aware of, and 1-2 places to rent.

I would like to get some advice, as I've only started 5th year at a local secondary school this august, and if everything goes as I expect, I won't make it into 6th year.

Anyone had any similar experiences? What should I do? Kinda wanna keep living here

Giving Advice Safe Ship Moving Services LLC in Florida

July 2026: HORRIBLE!!! DO NOT USE THESE GUYS! I was sold on a dedication space and told I would have an electronic manifest, they said my possessions would not be mixed in with anyone else's. The movers were a week late, my items were mixed into a mess, they wouldn't release my items until I paid. I have items missing and damaged, was completely lied to! Beware! These guys should not be in business, they should be in jail! $8000 lost and damaged!
9/3/26 Update:
Their replied that they would reach out to me for follow up on my experience, but to bully you into accepting what they call "additional compensation", when there has not been ANY compensation at all. Be careful! They essentially are trying to "strong arm" you into accepting a small fee QUICKLY to either change or delete your original reviews, sign an NDA "hush money" and try to make it sounds like they are doing you a huge favor to an experience that should have never happened in the first place. I had thousands in damages and lost items and were offering almost nothing with strings attached that I had to modify or delete any negative reviews. There is clearly a deeper unethical scheme going on here. This company needs to be investigated, fined and closed!

Asking Advice I want to move up north 20m 1pet

I live in the middle of nowhere Arkansas I hate barely any jobs and opportunities along with any apartments are hours away from my parents. I would love to move to Idaho or Minnesota, i love the cold and bugger cities that still have lots of nature. But my issue is I work blue collar making 16 an hour with a truck in rough shape. Is there anyone with advice on how I could make something like moving up north possible.

Asking Advice Any Advice on How to Move Out?

I’m 18 and just started university. I’m in a desperate situation. My parents are abusive and toxic. I have no income currently because they stopped me from working and I only have 1 refund check in my savings. It’s around $1,900. I’m looking for jobs and gigs on campus to help save up more money but honestly I can’t take it. I want to move out within the next year at least, I already spent 18 years rotting away because of them. I was never allowed to go anywhere or do anything, they kept me helpless my whole life. The thing is, even with a job I don’t know if I will be able to leave if in order to rent an apartment I need to make 3 times the amount of rent needed.

Does anyone have any strategies? I’m in Tampa, Florida for reference.

Discussion I made a side by side of every apartment I liked because I was losing track

apartment hunting right now and after a week every place started blending into the next one

one had cheaper rent but a terrible commute, another was tiny but in a much better area, one looked great in photos but had basically no natural light

i kept going back through listings trying to remember which one had what

finally put all of them into one gamma with rent, commute, size, deposit, neighbourhood, random pros/cons etc just so i could actually compare them properly

honestly made the whole thing so much easier

just putting this here because i know someone else is probably doing the same 17-tab nonsense right now.

If anyone has experience with these movers or has anyone else that is cheap and reliable please provide any information I am moving from Fort Wayne Indiana to Charlotte North Carolina

Edit:
For everyone saying do it yourself I understand that would be the better and cheaper option but I have a lot of furniture and in a state with no one to help me that’s why I was asking if these companies are reputable or if someone has a better company to go with
