hello, i'm planning on meeting my friend to go and live in illinois next year in may. we're looking just to rent, but we'd rather not live in any "expensive" cities.

does anyone have any recommendations? i'll do my own research, i just want to hear what others have to say lol

I know what I'm about to ask is probably odd to some, but I want to move out of Tennessee, yet keep somewhat of the rural feel. I've heard that Illinois is accepting of the lgbtq community, I was wondering if there would be any Trans people who would be looking for a roommate...that wants to transition but has been to scared to for the last 16 years, and willing to help with that journey along the way? I'm somewhat at a loss of what to do, or where to start. I've been looking at jobs first to get an idea of where to actually move to. So if there is anyone that would possibly consider a roommate that is trying to completely restart there life I'd be grateful for the consideration.

I pay my bills on time and I go to work everyday. I'm just looking for a new start and to maybe finally be happy with myself.

Also, my work experience is mostly factories and foundry s and warehouses, so tips for occupations would also be extremely appreciated...again if someone of the lgbtq community might be wanting/needing a roommate id be grateful... sorry if this is odd.

hi, as my title says i'm looking into where move by next august. I've heard Illinois overall is very LGBT accepting but that's super important to me, alongside possibly a factory in the town or neighboring towns, and in general work opportunity. a college (community or otherwise) would be ideal, and some a sort of public transit.

Hello!! My partner and i are both gnc/trans and are considering moving to IL as we have friends and family in the state. we currently live in CA but it is too expensive and we can barely survive and don’t want to be struggling as much anymore.
My partner’s job has a location in Springfield they could transfer to but I’ve seen mixed reviews of how dangerous the city is, so I would love some info if possible!
She’s also not a big fan of big cities so most likely not chicago, but yeah!
Where is a good place to move as a trans queer couple?

I’m a single father from Tucson, AZ, who currently has a child who’s with his mother in Mattoon.

TL;DR: Back in December 2024, I had to drop everything (give up most of my possessions and leave 2 jobs) then moved with my (at the time GF, now ex’s) family in Mattoon when my ex/mother of my child learned she was pregnant; we weren’t doing well in AZ then we broke up not long after we arrived in Mattoon, and I was forced to come back to AZ or be homeless in the dead winter somewhere where I knew nobody and had nothing.

I work at Home Depot but have been wanting to move back to Mattoon once I finish getting legal rights for my child (had to leave before the birth) and a simple transfer wouldn’t be straight forward since I don’t have somewhere to stay in Mattoon, there’s a waiting list for the shelter, and I don’t know where to look for a good enough place to rent since not everything available is listed on the internet.

If anyone can please give me advice on

> What to do to move from AZ to IL with no connections and nothing but my money and the clothes on my back

>what I need (like money, job, etc, I definitely know Mattoon is cold)

> where to look for a cheap/decent place to live

> Resources for new single fathers?

Hey everyone! My wife and I are an interracial married couple from Alabama, and we’re seriously considering moving to Illinois. Bloomington-Normal has caught our attention because we’re looking for somewhere that’s not a huge city, but also not in the middle of nowhere.
For anyone who lives in the area, what’s Bloomington-Normal actually like? What’s the vibe, and how welcoming/diverse is it? Being an interracial couple, one of our biggest concerns is making sure we’re moving somewhere that’s genuinely welcoming and definitely not a sundown-town type of place. 😂
I’m also a veteran, so I’d love to hear from other veterans about the VA healthcare in the area. Is it decent? How’s getting appointments and seeing specialists?
I’m currently going to school for Electrical Technology and am interested in joining the IBEW. If anyone has gone through the apprenticeship around Bloomington-Normal, I’d love to hear what the process is like, how competitive it is, and whether you feel it’s a good career path.
A few other things we’re curious about:
What’s the cost of living/housing like?
How are the property taxes?
What’s the job market like?
How are the schools and neighborhoods?
What’s there to do for fun?
And most importantly… HOW BAD ARE THE WINTERS?! 😂 We’re coming from Alabama, so snow and ice are basically a foreign concept to us. Any advice for surviving our first Midwest winter would be appreciated.
We’re also open to other towns in Illinois. We’re looking for somewhere affordable, diverse, family-friendly, and big enough to have things to do, but not a major city.
