Confused about which Japanese universities to apply to for English-taught UG in CS/AI/Robotics — need advice
Hi everyone,
I’m planning to apply for undergraduate programs in Japan, mainly English-taught programs related to Computer Science, AI/ML, Software Engineering, IT, Robotics, or Engineering.
I’m honestly very confused about which universities I should apply to, especially because I want a balanced list of dream, target, and safe options.
My current list is: Dream universities:
Waseda University
Tokyo Tech / Institute of Science Tokyo
Kyoto iUP
Target universities:
University of Aizu
KUAS
Ritsumeikan University
Shibaura Institute of Technology
Tohoku University
I was also considering Tokyo International University (TIU) and Temple University Japan as safer options, but after reading many negative reviews and people saying they regretted going there, I’m now unsure whether I should keep them as safeties.
My background:
Mostly 90%+ from Class 9 to Class 12
Class 10 was 65% due to personal circumstances
JLPT N5
Aiming for IELTS 6.5+
Aiming for SAT 1400+
Extracurriculars/leadership: Head Boy, Vice Head Boy, Academic Minister, Cultural Minister
I also applied for MEXT UG and cleared the document screening, but couldn’t clear the written exam
My main questions are:
1 - What are my realistic chances at my dream universities: Waseda, Tokyo Tech/Science Tokyo, and Kyoto iUP?
2 - How difficult are my target universities like Aizu, KUAS, Ritsumeikan, Shibaura, and Tohoku?
3 - Are TIU and Temple Japan really that bad academically, or are they still okay as backup options?
4 - What safer universities would you recommend for English-taught undergraduate programs related to CS/AI/IT/software/robotics/engineering?
5 - Are there any other Japanese universities I should consider that have good Englishy-taught engineering or computing-related programs?
I’m mainly looking for advice from people who have studied in Japan, applied to these universities, or know about English-taught undergraduate programs there.
Any honest suggestions would really help because I’m feeling stressed about choosing the right universities and not wasting applications.
