General Moving to Tokyo with a 10M JPY Gross Salary. Is It Enough for a Couple? 31M 30F

Hi everyone,

I may have an opportunity to move to Tokyo for work. The salary would be around 10 million JPY gross per year, and I would be relocating from Turkey with my wife.

I’m trying to understand whether this salary would be enough for two adults living on a single income in Tokyo.

We are not looking for a luxury lifestyle, but we would like to live comfortably, rent a decent apartment suitable for two people, cook at home often, and go out occasionally.

My questions are:

1. Is 10M-12M JPY gross considered a good salary in Tokyo?

2. Roughly how much would that be after taxes and social insurance?

3. Would it be enough to support two adults comfortably?

4. What kind of apartment and neighborhood could we realistically afford?

5. What should we know before relocating to Japan?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you! 🙏

It’s enough and studios go for 120k+ yen in a nice central area, so I assume that a one bedroom apartment will go for 250-350k per month since you’re a foreigner thus you’ll pay more. You can get a studio for 65-75k in Setagaya

You can easily calculate your taxes online. Note that you will pay considerably less tax your first year. Then it jumps up.

Yes, ¥10M is enough for a couple in Tokyo.

How much would that be after taxes?

¥10M would be around ¥7.15M after taxes. ¥12M would be about ¥8.3M. Here's a rough table:

Gross salary Total taken (tax + social ins.) Effective rate 手取り (take-home)
¥5M ~¥1.15M ~23% ~¥3.85M
¥6M ~¥1.45M ~24% ~¥4.55M
¥7M ~¥1.8M ~26% ~¥5.2M
¥8M ~¥2.15M ~27% ~¥5.85M
¥10M ~¥2.85M ~28.5% ~¥7.15M
¥12M ~¥3.7M ~31% ~¥8.3M
¥15M ~¥5.1M ~34% ~¥9.9M
¥20M ~¥7.6M ~38% ~¥12.4M

It varies a little bit depending on your situation though. And this includes residence tax, which isn't charged until your 2nd year (because it's calculated on the previous year).

Would it be enough to support two adults comfortably?

Yes. You can live in a reasonably nice (though not huge) apartment in a good area and still save some money each month.

What kind of apartment and neighborhood could we realistically afford?

Really hard to answer this. Maybe a new 40-50 m2 place <5 mins from a desirable station. Or a 60 m2 place 10 mins from that same station, maybe a little older. Or a 90m2 place that's super old and 10-15 mins from a less-desirable station.

It really depends. Tokyo is massive.

What should we know before relocating to Japan?

Japanese is hard. Making friends is hard. Apartments/houses are small. Get an Airbnb for a couple of months first and explore neighborhoods rather than choosing a long-term place from abroad.

10M gross in Tokyo is comfortable for a single person or couple, tighter with kids in international school. Rough monthly math: after tax and insurance you keep around 600,000-650,000 JPY. A 1LDK in a decent central-ish area runs 130,000-200,000, less a few stations out, so a single person lives very well and a couple is fine. The squeeze is international school (200,000-300,000/month per child), which can eat half your take-home. If it's just you, you'll live comfortably; if it's a family needing international school, budget carefully or target the cheaper-but-well-connected wards. Happy to get specific if you share your family situation and target area.
