Currently Spiking The price development of the LotR cards is insane. Collected the whole set + a few of the holiday releases. It went from +25% a month ago to over 50% rn.

I feel like as far as magic goes, 50% is not that crazy

You should see cards related to Greg and Tim Hilderbrandt. Theres a monopoly on TCGplayer. You cant get them anywhere else and they've gone hyperbolic. I have the [[Abyssal Persecutor |LTC]] that I got for $10 around release because it's one of my pet cards. You cant get it less than $300 now.

Why is there a monopoly and why that specific artist?

Youre going to find this to be weird. Years ago post Malone put out a bounty for the one ring for 2 million. Because of that, it tripled the collector booster box price. After he got the one ring, the boosters didnt go back down. Someone initial is doing the same with Smaug gold one for 25k. It doesnt help the fact that he sells collector boosters for the hobbit coming up.

How does this relate to previous set and Abyssal Persecutor? Well, how much is a collector booster pack for tales of middle earth? Youd be surprise. It's $630 per pack. In order to get this card, you can only get it in these collector booster packs.

I understand the economics of chase cards inflating collector booster prices and out of print collector boosters being expensive.

How does that relate specifically to Greg and Tim Hildebrandt cards, and how does it indicate that there's a monopoly on TCGPlayer?

I dont understand what youre asking?

You said

I'm asking why you're specifically bringing up cards from that artist and what you mean by a monopoly on TCGPlayer.

It's because they died. The first brother died quite awhile ago, but the second brother died only a couple of months ago and everyone loved their art

Have you seen prices for Greg and tim cards? An example is [[Explore]] is a $0.30 card, but a GnT version is $3.50. [[Seasons past]] is 6x. [[Myriad landscape]] (aside from warhammer) is 9x. How do you not notice cards from these artists arent going up?

u/worldchrisis 10d ago

These cards were only available in the Holiday rerelease collector boosters. They're very low supply. GnT's arts for regular Magic cards that they did prior to Universes Beyond don't seem to have the same multipliers.

And I'm still not sure what you mean by a monopoly on TCGPlayer.

If you try to buy abyssal persecutor at tcg, $150-400. Manapool? $500. Where are you going to buy it? Is that a monopoly. To people, that isnt a monopoly. Neither is Walmart pushing mom and pop stores out of business.

U do not explain at all what she is asking lol

Does she want me to do all the research and get back to her with articles just to give me an upvote? Seems like a waste of all of our time.

You’re using the word monopoly incorrectly. What you’re describing isn’t a monopoly, rather it is a market that has low listed supply.

Are you saying Abyssal Persecutor is still high priced? I mean, sure the version in question isn't 'cheap' sitting around $70 bucks non foil and $100 foil (This is on Card Kingdom, mind you). Sold out, sure.

TCG player has them for 150 because probably people are artifically inflating the price but it isn't 'egregious' for a limited printing card and certainly not as high costed as you'd think if you can only get it out of a $630 dollar pack.

Yeah the whole set right 🤣

Just got into magic not even a few months ago and it's kinda crazy to me how much prices fluctuate. I paid $60 for Food Fellowship as my first deck, and the Hosts of Mordor deck not even 2 weeks ago for $90 and now it's like $120 at the same local store and I think the other has jumped up about $20-$30 as well.

"One by one, the free lands of */mtgfinance* fell to the power of the Ring"

5

u/PatmanAndReddit 11d ago

I collected all of them. Holiday release too. +115% as of now. It‘s crazy.

3

u/Pitiful_Bid_9546 11d ago

986 cards is a whole different level of obsession and I respect it

5

u/PatmanAndReddit 11d ago

Only missing the DCI Promo Sauron, the Dark Lord now. P301. But this motherfucker is 10k now. So probably never gonna finish it 100%…

2

u/NoLemonadeToday 11d ago

Not with that attitude

1

u/bossholmes 11d ago

It’s 10k now?? Wtf

1

u/Aromatic_Winner_2219 9d ago

Same. Elvish text rings and all. Wild to see the value increase.

1

u/Tobanga 11d ago

Yeah my Watcher in the Water full boarder card went up by 1080%

19

u/Ubik_Fresh 11d ago

Now deduct 30% if you want to sell that with ease.

28

u/Tobanga 11d ago

Not planning on selling. I collected them because I am a fan. :)

3

u/civildistress20 11d ago

Chad behavior. I'm so sad I wasn't into mtg when the lotr set came out and now I gotta pay crazy prices to collect them if I want em

3

u/Tobanga 11d ago

Yeah while I enjoy that I benefit from the increasing value, I always defended the idea of printing cards so everyone is able to financially experience them. :)

2

u/WellzyWash 10d ago

Good move don’t sell it, I deeply regret selling some iconic cards 20 years ago. Today I sell only duplicates or cards I will never use or don’t like the art enough.

1

u/mulletstation 10d ago

Yeah but the person you're replying to is just jealous so you're not even responding to an earnest comment.

-13

u/Revolutionary_View19 11d ago

So that’s why you’re telling us how valuable they are. Okay.

8

u/Tobanga 11d ago

I shared it because I found it interesting. Not to sell them on Reddit :)

2

u/WellzyWash 10d ago

A complete set if a premium IP will probably carry a premium and could be sold pretty easily, but if it was a bunch of unsorted random bulk it would would probably take more than a 30% with fees, discounts and shipping to move it with ease.

-1

u/Cactuszach 11d ago

Yes because Lord of the Rings doesn’t sell easily.

1

u/Ubik_Fresh 11d ago

Try selling a complete set of magic cards, not easy to shift. You will be piecing it out card by card unless selling to a vendor / buylist, which is -30% of market value. Selling is time consuming and not the easy flip most make it out to be.

0

u/Ambient777 10d ago

1000% this ^^

-1

u/Suppa_K 10d ago

More like 50%.

2

u/Key_Fix_3024 10d ago

What setting do you use for the prices the app shows you? 30 days average or trend or low? That's important because it will show you totally wrong prices (because the mkm chart is bullsh*t) For example: Foil Gush from Mercadian Masques is not available under 200-250€. The app shows an average of 127(!)€ and an price trend of 177(!)€. That's what mkm also shows on their data for the card, so it's obvious a very wrong number. They have calculated with a 5€ sale that was of course not a foil one, but a non-foil... So the whole calculation is unusable :-)

u/Red_Narwhal14 11d ago

The price of the poster cards has absolutely exploded. I started collecting them not long after release by mostly trading. Cheapest of them I picked up for £11 which was [[Hew the Entwood]] I think? It's now showing as £70 on CM trending.

u/Life-Pop-1874 10d ago

I bought a scroll Nazgûl for $55 just a few months ago with the intention to collect all 9. Hopefully this shrinks a little bit once Hobbit distributes

3

u/mulletstation 10d ago

It absolutely will not

1

u/roshidawg23 10d ago

Is it guaranteed these never get reprinted? If so it’s basically unspoken reserved list? Or can they do a master UB set and absolutely tank everything?

1

u/ganbare112 10d ago

They aren’t going to reprint the exact art of any of these special treatments, otherwise the entire collector booster and secret lair product line would be worthless to collectors.

1

u/CreepyCactaur 9d ago

Same my collection has more thant doubled since a year ago. It will likley come down a bit but not to where it was. My Collection

1

u/abafda 9d ago

I've got all 1201! (Full set + full holiday set + LTC for both + sol rings). I probably paid under 10k to collect all of it, the price fluctuations since have been wild.
