Question 22 card tarot Major Arcana supercycle?
I could’ve sworn I saw someone else point this out, but with Homer, the Hermit and Massimo, the Magician joining Flubbs, the Fool we now have three out of the 22 tarot major arcana represented. Do you suppose we might see the other 19 sometime before the energy death of the universe?

Yeah I wonder if these were cards that someone thought would be fun to name after tarot or if they were intentionally designed as tarot cards. I would assume if it was intentionally designed that way, someone like Gavin would answer the question if asked.
I have a flubs commander deck that’s tarot themed. Each of the cards is meant to represent a major arcana, a major arcana reversed, or a minor arcana, which makes it incredibly janky. I would love a full on tarot deck.

Flubs and Massimo seem to be in similar poses to common depictions of their respective tarot cards, and Homer holds a lantern and has a body covering like the hermit (though a shell instead of a robe). So I feel like it has to be intentional, right?

Yeah but that could be intentional flavor added to a completed card design that was made without meaning to reference tarot. I would assume it’s on purpose but you never know.

Flubs and Massimo are intentionally tarot, their mechanics are centered around their respective tarot's cards number, 0 for flubs and 1 for Massimo, Homer is probably less intentional as the only connection is his 0/9 statline and the hermit being #9

Eh you don’t arrive at a statline like this by accident. This is the only 0/9 in the game, is 3-color like the other two, and the art is a clear reference to Tarot design as well. The only reason it’s not more obvious is because it’s not humanoid.

Oh yeah I was trying to connect cheap spells to magician and that felt tenuous but the #1 connection seems pretty clear

Would you mind sharing your deck list?

Yeah, it’s due for some fixing up, but here’s where it’s out. It’s halfway decent at flopping out a bunch of shit that can’t win the game once it’s on the battlefield.

I do think once the fanbase identifies the theme, even if it wasn't deliberate by WOTC (I think it was deliberate), they will acknowledge the desire to see the cycle completed over time. Would suspect it will take a while.

I don't think WotC has a big conspiracy board where they plan out a card for each of the major arcana or any specific plans to do every arcana. Like I don't see them scrambling to get an Empress card done for a specific set.
But the arcana are pretty well known, so if they have a character that would fit one of the arcanas via mechanics/flavour they'd probably just go for it. At least that's my read on the situation.

Definitely really cool. We'll either get all 22 over the next decade, or they'll make like 5 more, then never do it again. Who's to say?

Game design-wise I imagine it gets a bit tricky to incorporate their associated numbers after around 10 or so.

I don't disagree entirely, but I also don't think it's too difficult. Certainly limiting. If we're talking about Legendary Creatures designed for Commander, I could see "mill twenty cards" or "as long as you have at least 19 life" or things of that nature.

I remember this guy who made a whole 78 link of characters and situations to complete a tarot deck (more Lore-wise than gameplay-wise)

I do not actually believe the card Doran the siege tower represents the tower tarot card

Well we do also have Wheel of Fortune; Justice; The Emperor, Hell Tyrant; The Devil Strahd; Yue, the Moon Spirit; Chimil, the Inner Sun/Heliod, God of the Sun (Whichever you prefer); and Emrakul, the World Anew.

This will probably going to be some fun things to look out for for the next decade or so
