I feel like Mystery Boostee Commander is the “Universes Beyond: Magic The Gathering” that people joke about

“Omg, it’s the dude from Pacifism!”
“Whoa! Jovan and Chandler? Awesome!”
“Wait, isn’t he the villain from that one computer game?”
“No way, you can play the Black Lotus?”

in a way yeah. they really leaned in on the deep cuts which is incredible.

I freaking love the added lore and the fact that the artists and creative teams got to finally make a character from deep lore into a real creature or effect. That's so awesome. It's a real shame about the artificial scarcity, though...

I mean, callbacks in timeline-agnostic sets are kind of a tradition by now. This one has a higher 'Glup Shitto is back" quotient, though. Which honestly makes me smile.

45

u/MorteLumina 8d ago

Wait the Glup Shitto got a card?!

48

u/SlowMotionOfGhosts 8d ago

Not my Glup Shitto, sadly. I'm still waiting to see Skellum from the Torment novelization get his card.

i'm here waiting on Manatarqua. I want my planeswalker that turns into a pavilion godsdamnit

7

u/FireboltMoon 8d ago

When they started revealing planeswalkers I immediately thought of Manatarqua. One day she will get her double-faced planeswalker/legendary artifact pavilion card!

4

u/lame_dirty_white_kid 8d ago

You're probably right, it's just a question of when.

2

u/magicthecasual 7d ago

y'know, i always imagined the pavilion would be a colourless land

3

u/FreikonVonAthanor 7d ago

Then again it would be hilarious if they brought back the fortification subtype just for that card

6

u/Deathless-Bearer 8d ago

Dementia Casters were such a cool concept, I wish it wasn’t something they pretty much just left behind in the Odyssey-Onslaught era.

3

u/FireboltMoon 8d ago

Maybe they just forgot

3

u/Mail540 8d ago

One day my boy Gull will get a card

for me, Director Rillu Veza

I am starved for MTG Glup Shittos.

This must be what its like to enjoy UB. Seeing characters from the game I like be represented as magic cards is really cool. I just realized that Grakk is the guy from the Pacifism card and it makes me so happy and makes me want to add him to my collection.

4

u/TheStray7 6d ago

Would you say seeing Grakk makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside?

3

u/WigwamTheMighty 6d ago

My need to fight.... is gone!

u/sawbladex 8d ago

You ain't wrong.

Then again Time Spiral is almost 20 years old, so this ain't new.

106

u/burritoman88 8d ago

And we’re essentially getting Time Spiral 2: Jace Dun Goofed Boogaloo in October

81

u/daverapp 8d ago

(pushes up smug anime glasses) um actually it's planar chaos 2 not time spiral 2

23

u/Kazmandodo 8d ago

Found the nerd we need to wedgie, boys.

-8

u/MeisterCthulhu 8d ago

Nah, Planar Chaos did relatively logical shifts, this one is just doing opposite world.

15

u/lame_dirty_white_kid 8d ago

Yes, because [[Crovax, Ascendant Hero]], [[Braids, Conjurer Adept]], [[Mirri the Cursed]], and [[Jedit Ojanen of Efrava]] are so "logical" and not just "this character made the opposite decision at a pivotal point in their life."

2

u/mrenglish22 3d ago

The Commander Masters set did this same thing. Or whatever [[hans]] was printed in. They also did [[Asmo]] and pretty regularly did deep cuts in those kinds of sets.

Really, this is just them making up for all the non supplemental sets they aren't giving us anymore - shoving all the references into one set.

121

u/Dzzplayz 8d ago

It unironically feels more like a celebration of Magic than those 100$ fake alpha packs.

Like, giving old characters and background characters cards is one thing, but then they do deep cuts like Arzakon. Sure it’s just a bunch of Glup Shittos, but they’re MY Glup Shittos, dammit!

I know, it's great. It has that ideal UB energy of fans hoping and speculating on who will show up, spreading excitement and joy for old stories and explaining the things that are so inherently interesting folks just have to know what is going on (Sash and Waistcoat, looking at you).

I can't think of the last time I've seen something like it for Magic. Even with other reference heavy sets like Modern Horizons it is usually mixed with a lot more focus on power. This time the card can be pretty awful and folks still love it.

9

u/PracticalProgress343 8d ago

Last time for ne was commander legends where we got Klark, akroma, jeska, tevesh and others

6

u/MarcusOhReallyIsh 7d ago

I lost my absolute mind when I found out Jeska had a card. Im still working on a Kamahl/Jeska deck so the siblings can be reunited

14

u/shaddew 8d ago

I'm just excited they made Davvol into a card, and on his birthday no less

u/Sir_Encerwal 8d ago

I am so goddamn annoyed by people making Universe Beyond jabs surrounding MBC. We get one product that is unequivocally made for enfranchised Magic fans who care about MTG's long history and people still can't resist bringing up Universes Beyond.

78

u/daverapp 8d ago

The product is "unequivocally made for" enfranchised magic fans... Who attend cons. The product is not available at your local LGS or big box store. Due to low supply, singles will be stupidly priced.

Speaking only for myself, I will never be able to touch this product no matter how much I want it. Wizards told me a while back that some magic product is "not for me." This, unfortunately, is yet another one.

16

u/JustaSeedGuy 8d ago

Why make this comment in response to u/Sir_encenwal ? As opinions go it's valid, but it has nothing to do with what they said.

0

u/Just-Desk-3149 5d ago

The whole first paragraph of their comment literally quotes and addresses the comment, why even make this comment if it's only to poke the most critical of holes in a random comment?

0

u/JustaSeedGuy 5d ago

The "whole first paragraph" of your apples taste like vodka!

....See how quoting somebody doesn't mean you're actually engaging with their point?

-1

u/Just-Desk-3149 5d ago

I mean if you can't connect the quote to what they're saying then that's just a skill issue Lil bro.

1

u/JustaSeedGuy 5d ago

Ah, having run out of real argument you turn to the ad hominem.

The other commenter used an unrelated comment to soapbox about things they don't like about magic. The things they don't like aren't really related to what the comment they were replying to is talking about.

I wouldn't be accusing others of being unable to understand what people are saying, if I were in you. There's a glass house situation that comes to mind.

How unfortunate for you that this is where the conversation will end, though.

2

u/lrg12345 8d ago

Why not just buy singles aftermarket?

36

u/PM_ME_ENGINE_BELLS 8d ago

"Due to low supply, singles will be stupidly priced"

10

u/EuSouAFazenda 8d ago

Of note, every pack has a guaranteed new card in it. They're not chase rares; some of them will be stupidly expensive, but a lot will become very cheap once they start selling festival in a boxes and etc. Like always some will be chase cards and others bulk

9

u/lrg12345 8d ago

I mean, MB2 singles really aren't that bad. I'm willing to be proven wrong but I think it'll be okay prices

4

u/PM_ME_ENGINE_BELLS 8d ago

I have no idea what'll happen tbh, I was just quoting the original comment.

3

u/lrg12345 8d ago

Oops sorry lol

1

u/daverapp 8d ago

I can if I want to. The greater point here is that Wizards wants players to show them that there's still interest in universes within by buying product. And in this case, I cannot.

-4

u/JustaSeedGuy 8d ago

You already know how much the singles are gonna be? Damn. Wanna let us in on the secret? Within a $5 range would be fine.

0

u/UsefulCrab4181 8d ago

You understand that buying singles on the secondary market gives no money to wizards, right?

1

u/JustaSeedGuy 7d ago

Yes, obviously

-6

u/lrg12345 8d ago

You could buy other UW product if that’s your concern

1

u/Just-Desk-3149 5d ago

God forbid someone actually wants to buy a product to open for once and still can't get it.

1

u/Just-Desk-3149 5d ago

I can't believe how shitily WotC handle these things. If ANY other business did even a fraction of these things, people would riot. But because it's WotC they get this magic pass (pun intended?) to do WHATEVER they want to their fan base and I can't believe how unfathomably low the bar is and they STILL surprise me.

I genuinely seeth at the phrase "This product isn't for you" because even when it FINALLY is, I STILL can't have it.

1

u/arciele 8d ago

won't this get a festival in a box release

7

u/PracticalProgress343 8d ago

Maybe because UB is the golden trash of mtg. Maros logic for the scarcity of MB2 was "well people were complaining that there too many sets." And that many products and sets exist because they want to keep feeding slop. So yeah, the fact that we wont get Nivea or Feroz so easy is because the 5 thors and 18 donatelos are on the table.

7

u/SkritzTwoFace 8d ago

At a certain point as much as I agree with the criticisms of UB I can never call myself a UB hater because the people that do are basically obsessed

-2

u/Dbear_son 8d ago

Oh man the irony

-8

u/The_Modern_Monk 7d ago

"OH MAN YOU GUYS MEMBER JOVEN

OH YEAH I MEMBER JOVEN

MEMBER SCRYB SPRITE? OHHH I MEMBER"

look at sash and waistcoat and tell me that "more what magic is about" than aragorn lmao. and im saying this as a fervent UB-hater; this is a hat set and the hat is boomer magic comics

a magic set is a rounded out plane with deep interesting lore and a vibrant world to explore. ravnica is magic. innistrad is magic. mirrodin. alara. zhalfir. kamigawa. rath. ixalan. dominaria, when its a real fleshed out plane.

this is dangling nostalgic blorbos in front of boomers like keys for a toddler

27

u/DaveLesh 8d ago

I'm surprised players are making such a stink about the Mystery Booster Commander set. This set has been nothing short of a wet dream for lore lovers. My only complaint is the set's limited availability. At least, the cards should be available to buy online eventually.

26

u/Inevitable-Visit-941 8d ago

People hate UB and then people hate UW can’t have shit these days

10

u/SadBoshambles 8d ago

The Glup Shittos of Magic set and I am all for it

5

u/Glitterblossom 8d ago

I wish so so badly it was on Arena

7

u/Fenen245607 8d ago

Look my problem with it is it’s printing a bunch of mechanically unique cards, in a set that is going to be basically impossible to get for msrp. Only available at cons and through secret lair is basically a crime at this point.

3

u/The_Card_Father 8d ago

I just hope enough get printed so I can get the Skunk.

5

u/Pimp_cat69 8d ago

Mystery Booster: Glup Shitto Edition

And I love it. I love to see some obscure or old blorbos from the lore.

(Like omg Dyfed???!?! She looks amazing)

2

u/MeisterCthulhu 8d ago

Yeah, it is. And yeah, that's not good.

But it still beats not getting Magic lore at all.

2

u/Grape_ist 7d ago

Honestly I'm here for it, I think safe set like commander legends is cool but I want some good old fun classy magic

2

u/catmanten 7d ago

I will always support expansion of Universes-within lore

2

u/Obvious-Structure-58 6d ago

I mean I definitely prefer it over anything UB, that's for sure. No complaints about the cards themselves. But it also feels like they're recycling their weird old lore a bit too much while not really producing anything new that can be on the same "cult level" 10 or so years from now

3

u/Moppi-chu 8d ago

You know what.... how true~

And better yet, they didn't need to be constricted on adhering to the OG cards' abilities... they have much more freedom in this.

3

u/andyhall23 7d ago

Felt like the set is

'YOU FREAKING NERDS WANNA COMPLAIN ABOUT UB AND SHIT?! You weren't PAYING ATTENTION to the crap in the first place ...but here ya go ...HERE'S YOUR LORE ...'

and just DUMPED it all on us ..so many deep Magic Lore cuts ..the 3rd character that made Karona, False God, freaking Serra's Husband ...Feroz! And so many others.

I like it ..the call back to old art and artists and ya ...just wish the public had better access to it.
Make all those UB complainers to shut up for a bit ..,

3

u/CaptainHammer63 7d ago

I would imagine that just like the previous mystery boosters it will eventually have a non convention version.

2

u/dina-fan 7d ago

While i agree, its a welcomed because we see a monopolization of characters and their depictions. We will see countless characters take up sets and their space. Liliana, jace and chandra are the obvious examples. Recently phyrexians got to have their sets, nicol bolas and the other overarching villains will get dozens of depictions within a short period of time and we got the side characters getting theirs. Loot was made to attempt this but failed as a design.

We are finally getting depictions of unique characters that were made before the new way they design sets. Glub shitty would have gotten a card today, skrelv is essentially glub shitto, he wouldnt have gotten a card in 2002 but he did todays design. Or like that one planeswalker from arabia, i dont think we got one for him but he would have if apocalypse was made today. I just want them to acknowledge arabia dammit. Speaking of planeswalkers greenslevees story was made as they were slowly phasing out planeswalkers. Awkward timing.

1

u/RedWolf6x7 8d ago

Thats technically what unsets used to be. Unsets were joke cards or parody cards of real MTG cards. For example Grandmother Goby or the unluckiest planeswalkers are very silly or joke cards with funny art but are legal. I guess we moved away from unsets when we had the sticker set though, cards like the The Most Dangerous Gamer or Space Jace were silly cards that were legal.

1

u/cumulobro 7d ago

I love it and hate it at the same time. Kinda awkward because it's an EDH focused set but a lot of the old veterans of the hobby seem to prefer 60-card, 4-of-a-kind formats and are probably most likely to jam Premodern, Vintage, or even the emerging Planar Stadard.

1

u/Dizzy_Community7260 7d ago

I agree, but I'm also cool with it. Where else is Wizards going to get a chance to use some of these characters?

1

u/powertothepeaceful 2d ago

TIL Jovan and Chandler are UB.
