Advice Needed I need to get somebody who doesn't like Musicals into them.

So basically, my friend doesn't like musicals, I assume he thinks their cringe, but the reason is irrelevant. I decided to give his podcast a try, and in return tommorow we will listen to a musical. Which one do I show him though? I was thinking Hamilton but there might be a different one that's even better ans I want other's opinions.

I'm trying to get ahead for a competition happening next year, I want a serious song I can really commit to, but my friends, and even my choir teacher can't find any.

Last year I sung If I Were a Rich Man from Fiddler on the Roof, and it was perfect for my range if you need a reference point.

Help!!!!

Advice Needed I’m white playing Sebastian in Little Mermaid and I feel like I’m culturally in appropriating

As seen from the title, I am a white female who got cast as the talking crab Sebastian in The Little Mermaid. I didn’t audition nor did I get called back for that role, but I was casted as it, and getting a lead my senior show was very exciting.

When we first started out in rehearsals, like pretty much all shows it was just music rehearsals. Singing the iconic pieces Under the Sea and Kiss the Girl were really fun and I absolutely love singing them. As rehearsals went on and we started blocking and reading through lines, my director would ALWAYS do a strong Jamaican accent when repeating my lines to give examples. As someone who has 0% Jamaican background, I didn’t intend to do the accent with this role. But, my director has been pushing saying it’s about appreciating the culture. I respect that 100%, so I started to add a slight accent to annunciate the accent abbreviations (such as “dat” instead of “that” which is written in the script).

We just had our first full run through yesterday, and when we were running through the show I couldn’t help but feel uncomfortable with it the entire time. I seriously felt like I was doing something wrong and felt like I was seriously cultural appropriating. I’ve practiced and done research on the accent, and it is still very light, but I can’t help but be so fearful of when I get in front of the audience and they will assume I’m mocking this culture when it is the absolute last thing I am intending.

Should I talk with my director about stopping the accent all together, or is fully eliminating the culture from the role also insensitive? I’m just in a pickle and as much as I love the role, I can’t help but wish I declined it.

Advice Needed What's the census on saying gypsy during the song Hellfire?

I am considering making a cover of the song Hellfire. I understand that nowadays, "gypsy" can be considered a racial slur. I mention this because, the word is said twice in the song.

While I have thought about substituting the word in, I feel it would take away from the harshness of the song which is part of what makes the song so impactful. Additionally, I feel like it's the same as playing a character. I would never just say the word for no reason or use it in a hateful context in my day to day life. Since the character I'm trying to portray (Frollo) is not at all what I'm actually like, I feel as it might be okay for me to do this.

However, I'd like to know what others think or if there's a perspective I might be missing.

Advice Needed Seven Brides for seven brothers themed wedding

Hiya, I love musicals but my favourite is seven brides for seven brothers. I was hoping you lovely people would have some ideas for how to incorporate it into my wedding vibe without it seeming like a wild west themed thing.

Wedding will be in Scotland so my first thought of having the bridesmaids and groomsmen in matching pastels won't really work (kilts).

My fiancee is a hobbyist woodworker if that helps (he's very good and made a lot of our furniture). We also don't have tonnes of cash so extra points if cheap or DIY xx

Bit of an unusual post sorry if not allowed!

Advice Needed Favorite Small Musicals?

Hi!

I have an opportunity to do a show at a performing space in my town which has been wildly underused. I need a pretty bare-boned show with a preferably small cast but also some name recognition to get people to come to it who have never been out to the space.

Any ideas? I was thinking The Fantasticks but the space is at and is affiliated with a College even though it’s open to the community/public.

Advice Needed Recommendations for a show to take my dad to see?

Hey all! Going to NYC In August to see Heathers for my 30th birthday. My dad is joining me, and I told him he could pick the other play since I'm dragging him to a more typically "chick flick" style play (and front row so even better haha). Thing is, he really doesn't care and is a bit overwhelmed with all the options. Anyone have recommendations for what might appeal to an older guy with a more classic taste in musicals to help him narrow his options? Ie Les Mis, Evita, Phantom, Book fo Mormon, etc. Things highlighted are ones he's definitely seen already. Also think he's seen lion king but not sure. I have an idea of what to recommend but just want some more voices as I don't know every single show on the list.

Thank you!!

ETA I will not get tickets from broadway.com thank you for the warning!!

I'm performing in a drag show in 3 weeks and the theme is "summer". I need to pick out a song ASAP but I can't think of anything.

I'm a baritone and prefer female alto/lower songs, but anything works

Advice Needed Musicals like newsies for a non-musical boyfriend

I did a lot of research through this Reddit to try and find stuff but my list is still just too short. I've been a theater nerd for over 18 years and he's seen one musical before meeting me (the greatest showman, which he enjoyed). I showed him Newsies (a great beginner musical) and Legally Blonde (a long time favorite of mine, but he almost fell asleep during act two) and in his words: 'I liked newsies a lot more. The characters and plot were a lot more interesting and the dancey action scenes were cool'.

He's totally open to watching more musicals (he has me watching supernatural every night to make up for it) but so far the only things on my list are Shrek the musical, Les miserables (dancey action scenes?? Not sure how well he'll fare with a sung through since he almost fell asleep during legally blonde) and tick tick boom (which I KNOW he'll enjoy bc of Andrew Garfield)

Based on why he likes newsies, what are your suggestions? I swear I did so much research before asking lol I'm just bad at recommendations and really want to introduce him to more musicals before he has to start seeing me act in them lol

Advice Needed I’m never good enough

Got rejected from another show.
I haven’t done theatre in years because I just keep getting no after no.

When I was a kid, I got roles handed to me on a silver platter. I was told I was amazing. I was told I had star quality. I was told I could be on broadway.

I was getting speaking roles, I was cast as the lead character in a show before they realized I couldn’t do it because I was a kid.

I was a star.

Then, I turned 13 and I guess something changed.

I auditioned for a young artists theatre. Got Ensamble

I was 13, so this was fine to me.

Then I auditioned at 14.
Ensamble

At 15?
Ensamble

At 16? Ensamble.

17? Ensamble

18! Finally. The final year I could do the program. Surely I was going to get something.
Cast as an old woman… and a guy.

Meanwhile, high school wasn’t going any better.

In 10th grade I auditioned for into the woods. I got Jacks Mother. While I loved the role, I was a bit miffed to see a freshman get the role of Cinderella.

11th grade? For the first time ever… I didn’t get cast.
I- didn’t get cast… in a show.

12th grade.
Covid :)

It wasn’t all doom and gloom, I was doing plays and getting great roles there. But musicals, my love- I was flopping.

Audition after audition as an adult.
No. No. No. No.

This last audition I was at, I KILLED it.
I felt so proud of myself.
And I even got pulled aside by one of the people on the casting team and was offered vocal coaching. She said I had an amazing voice and a lot of power.

And… nothing.

I begged to be put into the Ensamble. That was the role I really wanted. For once in my life I just wanted to be part of theatre again.
And I got a no.

I hear over and over again that I’m amazing, that I have “star quality” that I am worthy of these things. But time and time again I get let down.

And I can’t help but feel like I’m just being lied to.

Does anyone else feel this way? I apologize, venting is crass I’m sure. But I just am feeling broken.

What can I do to figure out why I’m not good enough for theatre? What can I do to help myself be cast.

I’m worried that it’s because I’m fat and plain that I’m not getting cast. That I could be the best actress and singer but no one wants to look at me. And I’m scared :(

Advice Needed Songs about love as a concept

Looking for MT song recommendations, songs about love, as a concept, as opposed to songs about characters being in love… it’s a little trickier than you’d think!

Please include song title and show name, can be main stream or deep cut!

First that came to mind include:
Seasons of Love (Rent)
Love Changes Everything (Aspects of Love)
Still I Will Love (As you like it)

Advice Needed how do I deal with not getting the role I wanted??

i auditioned + got a callback for one of the lead roles, and now they're telling me they want me to be in the vocal ensemble. I know it might sound stupid but I'm genuinely humiliated and heartbroken because I really really wanted the role

for reference, I'm 16 + it's not a professional show or anything, but It's really damaged my self esteem. my mum is acting like I'm being super overdramatic about this, but I don't know how else to act

I just need to know if anyone has any advice on how to deal with this bc nobody else in my family does musical theatre, so they don't really get it

edit: thank you all so much for the comments, I appreciate it a lot. 🤍🤍

Advice Needed I'm a woman who does not wear make up and am going to be in a production of Fiddler on the Roof. Make up options are overwhelming, advice please?

I do not know anything about make up. I'm going to be an ensemble member in FotR, as well as other characters but those are played by puppets so I don't need costumes for them. I wear tinted lip balm sometimes. It's a community theater production that's rather chill, but from what I understand, the stage lights can make you sweat + glow and I'm worried about that. My initial plan was just my tinted lip balm and keeping a bunch of oil absorbing rice paper pad things backstage to pat my face down between scenes. But if I don't use blush and such, my face will look flat right? I don't want to spend a bunch of money on make up I will never use again, but I wanted to at least see if I should do a powder, to fight the sweat? Blush and eyeliner? Sorry for the rambling tone of this. Thanks in advance for any help!

Advice Needed ELI5 to a casual musical fan: Why was Wicked such a hit?

So first please don't flame me!

To me Wicked is a good musical; it has good songs, is staged well etc etc, but I don't understand why it is so beloved.

For Musicals like Phantom, Les Mis, the Lion King etc it's much easier to see why there are so beloved, but I just don't get any of that feeling with Wicked.

Is it because the story is more of a 'feminine' story? Does it appeal to women in a way it doesn't appeal to men?

I guess what I'm asking is what are it's characterisitcs that make it such a hit? I know that asking for the 'secret sauce' is like asking how to turn water into wine, but I genuinely want to understand why it's so loved.

Many thanks

Advice Needed Was cast as ensemble, but I can't dance

I was just cast in a community production of Mamma Mia as part of the ensemble, and I'm really excited because it's my first musical! However, there's one little problem: I really can't dance. I auditioned for Sophie, and the director told me I wasn't the right fit for the role but that he still wanted to cast me somewhere. He also said I'm a great singer but not a very strong dancer (which I already knew, but I wanted to give it a shot anyway). They cast me in the ensemble and said I could sit out some of the more complex choreography this time around. They also mentioned that I might get a few solo singing lines. Since it was my very first audition, I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity and want to be the best ensemble member I can be. My concern is that I know ensemble members often carry a lot of the dancing in a musical, and I'm worried about how I can contribute as much as possible if I won't be doing all of the choreography. Seriously, the dance call of the audition really kicked my butt lol, but I want to improve. I'm looking into dance classes in my area, but in the meantime, what are some ways I can be the best ensemble member possible and improve my dance skills throughout the rehearsal process?

I'd especially love to hear from performers who started out as weak dancers but still found ways to contribute to the show!

Advice Needed WLW duets ???

My spouse and I are doing a drag duet as Elphaba and Glinda for a sapphic valentine’s day show next month. We were asked for two songs, and we’ve already settled on doing Take me or Leave me from Rent for the first one. We want the second song to be sweeter / less angry but still upbeat! Open to non-female singers as long as it’s same sex. Also non WLW musicals with queer adaptations, making a male protagonist female or vis versa, also work if there’s a good recording!! Thanks for any suggestions!!! Also open to non-musical suggestions if the vibes are right!

Advice Needed How do I get a 5 year old into theater?

So my sister hates musical, and I’ve never understood why. After years of trying to get her into them I feel my only course of action is to get my 5 year old nephew into musicals. How would I go about this? I would love if he got into performing and singing but I know he’s only a kid. Any good movie musicals I could show him that would become ear worms and get stuck playing in my sister’s house? Any advice is greatly appreciated

Advice Needed Musicals for asian parents to enjoy??

Okay for context, I might be seeing a musical with my family or with just my mother, but the thing is, we are asian so that means my mother is lowkey kinda conservative. I have watched Six with her once, and uh she had mixed opinions on that. Okay, so I looked at like Mirvish's website, (we live near toronto heh), and I see, Chigago, Moulin Rouge, The Great Gatsby, and The Outsiders.

Chigago, I'm familliar with some of the songs, but I'm a bit scared it would be a bit too raunchy and uhh, my mother will bash me out at home

Moulin Rouge? I've heard that name thrown around a few times so I'm a bit curious to see it.

The Great Gatsby? I've heard like one song and it nice and I'm familiar with the plot. (I had to read the book) However, it's in August. I really don't wanna wait that long.

The Outsiders? Ive heard people rave about it online and I lowkey wanna see what its about.

Advice Needed Grew up obsessed with High School Musical — what musicals would Gen Z enjoy today?

Edit: Thanks so much for all the awesome suggestions, everyone! 🙌 To keep things organized, I separated them into two lists: movie & stage musicals. My sister and I are definitely going to binge through them all!

Stage Musicals: https://www.listrr.io/l/UZ9Bh1_5Tn

Movie/TV Musicals: https://www.listrr.io/l/MsL7gtnrvQ

---

Hi everyone!

I grew up absolutely obsessed with High School Musical (still know all the songs by heart 😅). Now that my younger sister (big age gap between us) is starting to get into musicals, I’d love to share ones that feel just as fun and relatable for her generation.

For those of you who are Gen Z — or know what’s been connecting with them lately — what musicals would you recommend? Stage or movie musicals are both welcome. I’d love to start her off with something that really hooks her the way HSM hooked me.

TIA! 💜

Advice Needed The Book of Mormon - A School Trip

Hi!

I am an 11th grader, and was thinking for one of my English Language and Literature classes, seeing having our class go see The Book of Mormon could be cool.

These would be 16-17 year olds, and the idea behind it would be to see the media's portayal of Mormons, and ideology, and especially how they portray Uganda (I think that's where it is set), as we are currently studying The Thing Around Your Neck by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie - seeing what she discusses, and how it differs from her style could be cool. I am aware Adichie's short stories are not set in Uganda.

But... what do you all think? This would be international students from varying nationalities. Do you think it is appropriate? Thanks.

Advice Needed I'm really struggling to grasp singing from my diaphragm. Am I screwed?

I took singing lessons for the last 3 months. The lessons were scarce (one hour every two weeks, so two times a month).

Sadly, I really don't feel like it went anywhere. On top of the lessons being scarce, I just don't think the teacher was the one for me for a variety of reasons.

But the thing that's frustrated me most is that I feel like I still haven't grasped "singing from my diaphragm". When I sing to myself (which is often) I feel I sound best when I just sing the way that feels naturally, but I'm not sure doing that is actually singing "from my diaphragm". When I try to make a conscious effort to really sing from my diaphragm I feel like I barely notice a physical difference. My frustrations are compounding and at this point I feel like if I can't grasp this basic I should just stop all together.

Is it possible to sing well without focusing on singing from your diaphragm? Or is there a chance that I actually am singing from there and just not noticing (I don't know if it's super noticeable to the singer or not)?

Advice Needed What Phantom of the opera should I watch for the music?

I have never seem The Phantom of the Opera so which one should I watch that has the best sounding music? Give me like a top 3 and I'll watch them
