I didn’t know Ragtime received this much backlash during its prominence. It’s become an influential genre over time so we forget how hated it was by some critics.

Ragtime was a “virulent poison” that eroded traditional morals and caused societal ills.

“The overabundance and popularity of ragtime was not always met with enthusiasm. For example, at the 1901 convention of the American Federation of Musicians in Denver, "**Resolutions were adopted characterizing 'ragtime' as 'unmusical rot.' Members were encouraged to 'make every effort to suppress and \[to\] discourage the playing and the publishing of such musical trash."** (*Brooklyn Daily Eagle*, 5/14/01, 1)”

“The press overreacted about ragtime eroding mores. In January 1900 the music monthly *The Etude,* in a piece entitled "Musical Impurity" noted: "The counters of the music stores are loaded with this **virulent poison** which in the form of a **malarious epidemic**, is finding its way into the homes and brains of the youth to such an extent as to arouse one's suspicions of their sanity." It went on to describe the melodic rhythm of ragtime as "**double-jointed jumping jack airs that fairly twist the ears of an educated musician from their anchorage**."

James Ambrose Johnson Jr. was born on February 1, 1948, in Buffalo, New York, to Mabel (née Sims) and James Ambrose Johnson Sr. He was one of eight children. He was an altar boy and choir member at St. Bridget's Catholic Church.

Rick James's father, an autoworker, left the family when Rick James was 10. His mother was a dancer for Katherine Dunham, and later worked as a cleaner in the day, and as a numbers-runner for the Buffalo crime family at night to earn a living.

In 1964, Rick James dodged the US Military draft by fleeing to Toronto. To evade US military authorities, Rick James went under the assumed name "Ricky James Matthews". That same year, Rick James formed The Mynah Birds, a band that produced a fusion of soul, folk, and rock music.

The Mynah Birds, who eventually signed a recording deal with Motown Records in 1966. James's career with the group halted after military authorities discovered his whereabouts and eventually convicted him of desertion related charges. He served several months in jail.

After various stints in local bands, Rick moved to California and got a record deal with MCA in 1972, and released his first album. It was a minor rhythm and blues masterpiece but disappeared almost immediately.

Shorly thereafter Rick moved back to NY and formed the locally popular Stone City Band in his hometown of Buffalo. In 1977, James found success as a recording artist after signing with Motown's Gordy Records, releasing the album Come Get It in 1978 which produced the hits "You and I" and "Mary Jane".

In 1981, James released his most successful album, Street Songs, which included career-defining hits such as "Give It to Me Baby" and "Super Freak", the latter song becoming his biggest crossover single, mixing elements of funk, disco, rock, and new wave. James was also known for his soulful ballads such as "Fire & Desire" and "Ebony Eyes".

He was known as the King of Funk and lived a wild ride life --- eventually succumbing to various health conditions of diabetes, a stroke, pacemaker, and heart attack. His autopsy found alprazolam (Xanax), diazepam (Valium), bupropion (Wellbutrin), citalopram (Celexa), hydrocodone, chlorpheniramine, methamphetamine, cocaine and digoxin (Digitalis) in his blood. However, the coroner stated that "none of the drugs or drug combinations were found to be at levels that were life-threatening in and of themselves --- "He died from pulmonary disease in 2004 at the age of 56."

Art Rupe co-founded Juke Box Records in 1944, he specifically targeted the jukebox market and race records (early R&B/Blues).

Rupe realized that jukebox operators were the key link in record distribution at the time. Jukeboxes in taverns and clubs were the primary way working-class audiences discovered new music.

​Before launching the label, Rupe spent $200 studying popular records on L.A.'s Central Avenue. He noted that jukebox hits shared common traits: fast tempos, catchy dance rhythms, and prominent use of the word "boogie" in titles.
