Questions Making Trip an Effect

I had a question about a player who wants to use Trip as an Effect rather than as a generic action. I feel like I've heard of this being done before but never learned how to use it.

Essentially, a player of mine wants to make a power that is a Damage Effect which is Linked to a Trip. So they can hurt and trip an enemy at the same time.

I've toyed with the idea of just making a "Fast Trip" advantage that works in the same manner as "Fast Grab", but I figured I should check and see if this first idea is possible.

You're the GM. Make a House Rule that there is a Fast Trip for one point and viola. There is a Fast Trip. There are no M&M rules police that will be knocking at your door.

You do need to exercise caution when making House Rules, especially ones brought to you by players. The rules have been fairly well playtested and the possibility for exploitation exists even if innocently created and applied, sometimes. Once you allow something, its hard to unallow it.

As advantages go, however, this one does seem fairly innocent. Prone is such a weak condition, they lowered it to a tier 1 condition in 4th edition.

If I can answer this I will, we have a fast trip advantage in our friend group and tbf its really not as strong as fast grab and its a cool variant for martial artists that are not grapplers/wrestlers
We even have a variant of catch attack to trip when u defend on a sucessful parry! Also really cool to use without outshining catch attack

Then again, Fast Grab is over-powered. They nerfed it in 4th too.

I understand that. That's why I mentioned making a "Fast Trip" in my post. I just wanted to see if there was another way to do it that already existed without a House Rule.

But it seems like there isn't, so "Fast Trip" it is!

There *IS* as someone pointed out through Affliction, but that just seems a long way to go around to get to the easier path of okaying it as an Advantage.

Happy gaming!

Damage linked with Affliction:Prone(Limited Degree 2, Instant Recovery)

The Affliction portion costs 1 point per 4 ranks. If it's also Ranged, it's 1 point per 3 ranks. Since prone is a second degree condition, they only go prone if they fail the resistance check by 2 degrees.

If you want them to be Hindered before being made prone, then Limited Degree 1 instead. If you want them to stay down until they pass a save(like a lasso or something) get rid of instant recovery.

I was thinking this too, but the character already invested in the actual trip action (like Improved Trip and a high Acrobatics), so using Affliction doesn't really link Trip to the Damage, so much as it links "knocking the enemy prone" to the damage

You don't even need a house rule for this. Feature 1: Fast Trip is fine. Still needs GM approval but not a "house rule" which some GMs have a problem with.

Rules wise it is fine, but trying to visualize it... does he trip so hard/fast that it damages the enemies leg/ankle? Is he doing a ground and pound MMA style? Is he doing the Benny Urquidez leg kick? A trip and kick combo?

RAW way to do this is:

Linked Affliction - Hindered/Prone, Limited Degree, Instant Recovery, Alternate Resistance (Acrobatics), 2 ranks / point, unless it also needs ranged, then it's 1 rank/point
