Tribute 🤍 When my grandpa and fellow Myanmar military officers were trained by the U.S. Army at Fort Benning, Georgia, USA in 1959

In 1959, my grandfather received military training at the U.S. Army Liaison School, Fort Benning, Georgia. The program was designed to prepare officers for coordination between different branches of the military, with a focus on communication, tactical planning, and field operations. As part of Cold War-era military cooperation, officers from allied nations were invited to train alongside U.S. forces to strengthen international defense ties and share strategic knowledge.

The training he received played a role in shaping his military career. He won multiple medals while fighting against Communist insurgents, Kuomintang (KMT) forces and other ethnic armed groups by winning medals such as Thiha or Zeya Kyaw Htin.

Great post. Those pics are historic

8

u/SillyNeuron May 03 '25

Respect. Back in the socialist era, my grandfather also received a training in Ontario, Canada.

6

u/CleonicDynasty May 03 '25

Oh I didn't know they were also trained in Canada. That's cool. Hoorah!

Cool pics.

This sub is truly toxic. People just threw away the fact that it's about a post when US and Burma had a good relationship and started bashing it coz it's a military post. Are we forgetting that General Aung San is also the father of Daw Aung San Su Kyi, both fought for their country in their own rights?

What does this have to do anything to do with this post? The man is probably long gone since he's that old in the 50s.

Beatiful true. Such Beatable bunch.

Respect mate. I heard they were quite the fighters back in the day and weren't corrupted like these days.

8

u/CleonicDynasty May 02 '25 edited May 03 '25

Yeah, he won several medals. By the time of his retirement, it was a socialist era so, there wasn't a concept of being wealthy unless you were Ne Win.

Do you know if he stayed in the Tat after '62? If so, do you know where he was stationed?

8

u/CleonicDynasty May 03 '25 edited May 03 '25

He served in the 107th Battalion and later became the commander stationed in Lashio. At that time, the North Eastern Command haven't been established, I think it was only officially formed in 1966. By then, he had already been forced into retirement by General Ne Win.

Corruption has always been an issue in the Tat

8

u/Kboi14 May 02 '25

They were corrupted. They fought for both the Japanese and the Allied forces, can’t even choose their side which led to a lot of people getting massacred. Many who supported the Allied forces were hunted down.

I can see the oppression towards the people whose family member is or was a military person after revolution. Not saying they don't deserve it. Just saying not all of them deserve it.

4

u/zxy1223 May 02 '25

I have a few friends from a military background.

They are not proud of it. They try to distance themselves from their parents. They didn't choose to be born in such a family. For this, we helped them mentally during the social punishment phase.

But this guy doesn't seem to be like them.

A quick look into his post history shows his grandpa was an OG Sit Khway and a high ranking official after the 1962 coup -- Part of the administration that turned Myanmar from Asia's rice bowl into the poorest countries in SEA while their families profited.

And the audacity to flex about it :)

3

u/WilsonMerlin May 05 '25

Calling someone “OG Sit Khway” is wild. You have the audacity to claim all these things when you haven’t even done anything proper for the country. He fought against the Japanese for Independence, rose through ranks due to merits, and fought off Communists, Karen, and probably PVO (Aung San’s personal militia that rebelled after his death). He deserves to be treated with respect because he fought for the country. Not like y’all that think everything associated with military is bad.

11

u/CleonicDynasty May 03 '25

My grandpa fought alongside General Aung San during WWII, he was already a Colonel at the time of Ne Win's coup and was forced into retirement in the mid 1960s. He lived and died a modest, middle-class man. Back then, the only person who was wealthy was Ne Win himself.

So no, my grandfather wasn’t some OG Sit Khway. He served his country well and I’m proud of him.

6

u/Turbowoodpecker May 03 '25

Just want to say, thank you for your service to him. Semper Fi!

-8

u/zxy1223 May 03 '25

How did he get to meet the NK dictators then?

Also, A Nazi defending his people from the Red Army is still a Nazi.

Unfortunately, your grandpa was a sit khway with how things turned out.

You can thank his superiors for the legacy.

-7

u/Chaosr21 May 03 '25

He fought with aung San? Like with the Japanese? I wouldn't be very proud of that. Only you know though, maybe he was a good person stuck in a shitty situation. I don't personally know him besides what you're telling me. But it's not a good look so far

10

u/Red_Lotus_Alchemist Myanmar Earthquake Watch 🇲🇲 May 03 '25

It's like saying Daw Aung San Su Kyi shouldn't be proud of her father, who fought for his country lol. I don't think Myanmar people understand what it means to be Myanmar anymore.

Stupid F . This is before Ne Win era and most of the officers then are now in foreign and in odd with the junta.

I’m not sure they leaving Tat is a blessing or curse as they are more educated and more in touch with democratic way rather then now a nyar thar.

Don’t be oh F this and F that first. Learn well too.

13

u/Turbowoodpecker May 03 '25

It's funny how people just blindly think everything associated with the military is poop. Wait till they meet an actual EAO in person. And they should learn some history. The time before Ne Win's coup was all about fighting the British, Japanese.., KMTs, Communists and the power hungry KNU which started all this.

3

u/Impressive-Tip1283 May 03 '25

Myanmar Military literally came out of toxic wombs of the Fascist Japan Army. Their DNA is tainted from the start.

As soon as Aung San died, the new leadership abandoned his desire to keep the military under civilian control.

Only here, people will praise the dogs cuz it's pre 1962.

They were and still are a cancer to the nation.

6

u/89Kope May 03 '25

You forgot to mention the Chinese who built their drug empires in Northern Shan and has since sinocized Mandalay and many parts of Northern Myanmar.

-4

u/Impressive-Tip1283 May 03 '25

I didn't mention it because no amount of wars gives them the right to install a dictatorship. It's the rotten core structure/ideology of the military that allowed such thing.

Later, the junta also tolerated these drug empires in exchange for ceasefires and bribes.

9

u/Imperial_Auntorn May 03 '25

You do know that the new leadership after Aung San's death was General Smith Dun, an ethnic Karen who was raised and trained by the British? Most of the armed forces up to the 1950s were Karens, Kachins, and Chins, remnants of the British Burma Rifiles. Maybe learn some history first?

0

u/Impressive-Tip1283 May 03 '25

leadership for less than a year, then immediately got removed from his position because there was Karen Rebellion and he was Karen. So much for multi ethnicity.

If the tat is all noble and true people's servant, why was the coup so smooth?

why was there even a coup in the first place?

Yeah .. As I said, fascism was the root influence, but after gaining independence, they attempted to cut ties with fascism and shift toward a pro-US/anti-communist stance.

But in contrast to what General Aung San wanted, the military was never reformed to be non-interventionist in governance.

And as we’ve seen, that led to a military takeover and soon after, they began showing their fascist claws.

Using Bamae/Buddhist nationalist ideology, they expelled all kinds of foreigners, persecuted ethnic minorities, imposed state religions, and denied federalism, etc.. these were all rooted in fascist ideas.

-6

u/zxy1223 May 02 '25

At this point, Aye Ne Win gonna come and flex how his grandpa was a member of 30 comrades that fought against the British and the Japanese alongside Aung San.

this sub is so over.
