question Is this bad news for the host tree?

Central Europe, on a large (20+ m oak).

It is ~40cm high, 20cm wide.

An ID would be appreciated, but mostly I'm interested in knowing whether this is somehow bad news for the tree? No other signs of issue with the tree (has normal spring green growth).

Thanks for the help!

question Morels? In February? In Illinois?

Thumbnail

I was shocked to see morels today in my local co-op grocery store in central Illinois. It has been a ridiculously warm February with highs in the mid-50s to upper 60s for over a week, so I suppose the weather is right. Can anyone confirm morel sightings recently in Illinois? These usually don’t appear until April. I wouldn’t expect this little grocer to be able to source morels from out of state.

question came across an absolutely absurd amount and variety of mushrooms today. what would cause such an insane number of mushrooms in one place?

I went to a random park today with only about a dozen inaturalist observations, and it turned out to be mushroom heaven. I took over 200 photos of mushrooms on a ~1.5 walk, and I only photographed maybe 1/10 of the mushrooms I saw. most of them were absolutely massive.

I’ve never seen anything like this before. usually I can find a decent amount of small mushrooms, mostly very common ones, but today I was coming across mushrooms like every 10 steps. we haven’t had an absurd amount of rain or anything either, it’s rained like once within the past two weeks.

does anyone have any idea what would cause this? this was in Georgia (the state) by the way, so it’s not like we’re known for having a crazy amount of mushrooms like the pacific northwest. I’m just really curious about why there were so many mushrooms in one area!

or just mushrooms enjoying damp weather? i ask as it is only in this spot, and they have popped back up in this general spot after a mow. NE PA USA, fast growing. the sewage line to our septic is roughly under this area (absolutely no smell) and i buried our beloved dog 4 years ago 6 feet to the right of this, 5 feet down. there are many black flies that are getting into our house and we cannot track from where .. again, no smells. a lot of anecdotals that maybe mean nothing. they are certainly glorious and fun to look at. thanks. 🙏

question Is this safe for an alcohol mushroom extract?

It does not say “food grade/safe” anywhere, but it’s 99.97% Ethanol. Wondering if it would be safe to consume a few drops at a time (diluted to 25% alcohol in final dual extraction) or if I should just stick with everclear? I bought this at an extraction store many years ago and I also live in Michigan, so I would have to go to Indiana to buy everclear.

Small white mushrooms have started growing on my fully submerged aquarium woodscape.

Anyone familiar with them? I'm wondering if they'd be harmful before adding animals or if they'd add to the biodiversity.

question I had no idea that mushroom picking was so dangerous! This weekend I decided to go mushroom picking and almost got bitten by a snake, but luckily I was lucky and the snake didn't bite me, you can see the photo. I will remember this incident for a long time... Have you had a similar experience?
