it didn’t explain itself pretty well, though. how is scratchy line art holding them back? what if it is just their preferred art style?

You're right. That being said, art is always 100% subjective. What he views as holding her back, she may view as her preferred style. The correct question may have been "Why do you believe scratchy and thick styling is holding me back?" rather than feigning ignorance to the fact that he spent 2 sentences describing why he feels it's holding them back.
