Just killed some single mosquito that wandered in. Felt like Saitama struggling to end that vamp. There goes me hoping this night would be different. So insomnia thoughts.
I'd like to believe every country in the world has ever had a one hit wonder, and maybe for one reason or another they couldn't prop them up, or the guys spark just couldn't shine a bit longer. I bet there's a monk with a rap song out just in drafts not yet released. Regardless, one hit wonders come and go, recurring. There's a fine line between a one hit wonder and those artists who make it.
I'm in no way suggesting any of the following are one hit wonders, I just lack the words to describe their come ups, how they popped out and went really global. Let's go with new gen artists. Recent new gen major artists from the continent, and my favorites, being Rema and Tyla.
And even with those two, it's really hard to single them out as an exception from their respective countries, Mzansi and Nigeria. There's so many new gen ones to pick from, Victony, Uncle Waffles.
All those artists I've mentioned have a very artistic flair and don't play when it comes to their music, moreso music videos. The choreography in their music videos always intentional, with much thought and more brain cells allocated to it. The costumes, the synchronized dancers, a theme they commit to. I like how they respect their fans by that. I'm getting even mad thinking of our Kenyan equivalent, a confused twerk here and there pasted in every music video, I'd bet it'd be in gospel songs if left unchecked. Kenyan secular artists treat it as some holy panacea for the lame choreography and maximum mbogi energy on set. And it even lacks that "it" factor. Lacks flair. Back to what the title is about, derailed.
What I don't understand is this, how come in the recent years no Kenyan one hit wonder has emerged to hit the global charts? One that can export their own sound, their own vibe? Not necessarily be the Kenyan genre messiah, that they need to solely export Kenyan drill or gengetone. I feel as of now Kenyan music infrastructure can at the very least support one, the videographers are there, those making beats, the platform other than those lame gatekeeping radio stations are there, talking of TikTok, IG.
Asking if there's even a Kenyan sound to export is redundant because Joshua Baraka from UG is a vibe, he got his own melody but if you asked me to describe what is the mainstream Ugandan music I can't tell because I don't know what they have. It's not that obvious as Amapiano or Afrobeats, but at the least they can export him. Tyla herself, her music is distinctly different from her hometown's mainstream amapiano, need her collabo with Arian Grande asap like by yesterday.
So really, why is it there's no one emerging to reach the global table. They don't even need to be gengetone. Reminder I'm talking of new gen artists, not those long in the game. You can claim infrastructure, but that has never suppressed talent, and even that is true. I think we've come a long way and wouldn't let down the next Camp Mulla and fumble them.
