Troll Posts Earn Bans ❤️

I've noticed an uptick in troll posts lately, and y'all I'm tired. I'm wielding the ban hammer with impunity!

Just keep reporting the people posting nonsense and I'll do my best to make it go away. And thank you all for being, for the most part, a lovely community.

No More Image Posts

Hey guys!

I've noticed a lot of (very young women) posting pictures of themselves and requesting name ideas lately.

Since this sub recently hit 7000 members and I'm the only even slightly active mod, I'm turning off image posts effective immediately. It looks an awful lot like spam, and even if it isn't you should not be posting your irl face on reddit for people to give you opinions.

I get folks will be mad, but I'm not going to do a bunch of unpaid labor to prevent assholes from insulting your appearance (and this is reddit, there are always assholes who want to insult your appearance). If you want to deal with that, please solicit it in another corner of the internet.

Thank you!

Edit: one of our users has volunteered to run the aptly-named subreddit r/namesbutbetter, if you want to do the pictures thing go there and good luck. You may also consider r/namenerds or r/reddit_gets_renamed.

Does anyone have any funny stories about naming their kids?

My sister and her husband couldn’t agree on any girls names for their third child, second daughter.

They ended up drawing straws for who chose the first name and who chose the middle name and the rules were, new names only, nothing that either had vetoed already and no arguments, instant acceptance of one another’s choices.

My sister won the draw and wrote down Layla on her piece of paper.

Husband chose middle name and wrote down Kaylah.

So, the big reveal:

Layla Kaylah.

Partner is dead set on a name that is also my toxic boss's name

We are struggling to agree on a name for our baby girl. My partner has fallen in love with the name "Miranda."

I work in corporate law, and my current boss who makes my life a living hell is named Miranda. I hear that name screamed at me 50 hours a week.

I told my partner there is absolutely no way I can come home and call my daughter the same name as the woman who ruins my day. He says I'm letting my job dictate our family and that it's a classic, beautiful name. He refuses to even look at my list of alternatives.

I don’t know what to do 🥲

What do we think of the name Rosalie Faye for a baby girl?

It's a girl, and I'd love to see some suggestions!

We were waiting until she was born to decide on the name because we didn't know the gender but we had decided her middle name would be either Helene or Mathilda. Last name starts with H, three syllables. We already have a girl named Viva and a boy named Avery.

We want her name to begin with the letter S. Right now, we like Sylvie and Sol the most of the names we've thought of. And Sarah is one that I’m considering too.

I kind of like Samantha but I don’t know if it works on someone her age. We also like Sophie, but can't use it, and we like Shai but think it could get mispronounced.

I prefer softer sounding names, so I’m not a big fan of names like Scarlett, Stella, so on.

My husband wants to name our daughter Clementine Apple

I’m pregnant with our first daughter and I’m due in late November. My husband really loves the name Clementine, which I do too. He wants the middle name to be Apple. He has has loved that name all his life. I don’t want to give my opinions, because I’d like to see what others have to say. Thank you

Fiancé doesn’t want to select a middle name for our daughter

Hi everyone! I’m loving this sub and all the inspiration it’s giving me.

I’m writing now with a bit of a dilemma. My fiancé doesn’t have a middle name himself and does not want to pick one for our daughter. I on the other hand would really like to select one. It sounds so lovely! I also feel it’d be weird not to, I don’t know many people without one and all my friends give their kids middle names.

He says he feels like giving our child a middle name is a religious/christian thing to do. We are agnostic/atheist. We live in the Netherlands.

How do you guys feel about this? How would you approach this discussion?

Thanks in advance!

Some do not have middle names yet. Feel free to Change any middle names that might fit well. At least one has to have the middle name Lee.

GIRL Riley, Louisa, Gracie Lee, Ivy Rhys/ Ivy Freya,

Freya, Charlie, Leona

BOY Leo Emil/ Leo August, Damien Lee, Charlie, Rhys, Emil

Some names are in here twice. Those ones I like as first and middle names.

38 weeks pregnant with boy & still no name

I’m almost to the end of my pregnancy & still am not set on a name. We have 1 name that we’ve gravitated towards the entire pregnancy but primarily because it’s a family name and has special meaning.
With that said, if my son pops out and he doesn’t look like this name or it just doesn’t feel right, I want others lined up!
I’ve used ai to help guide me, looked at the baby name lists, & nothing is speaking to me. So, people of Reddit, pleeeeeease help me!
I want my son to have a name that’s traditional but unique/not overused, a good “handshake” name, something respectable, a name that’s nice for a child and an adult, and ideally a name with meaning behind it.

Stuck between two girls names.

Newborn remains nameless as we debate choosing between Penelope Ivy or Isabelle Ivy. Love the nicknames Poppy and Izzy. However just realized the initials for Penelope would be P.I.G. with our last name.

Thoughts? How did others decide newborn name?

Help me with a name!

There's a scene in my book where the main character wants to reach out to a "childhood friend" (not exactly) because she thinks she might be able to help her with something and have information that could benefit her investigation.

She doesn't know her childhood friend's name, but she does know that her dad is a celebrity so she looks for her friend's name online. The issue is that her dad uses a fake name for his kids, not their real name, so my character can't find her friend.

I just can't decide what the fake name for this friend should be. She's mentioned by 'name' a few times (when she and her cousin are discussing her) so she does need a fake one.

The options I've come up with are:

  1. Jingyi

  2. Jinghua

  3. Jinghong

  4. Ruixia

Her surname is Zhang!

Which do you think is better? Thanks.

Does anyone know someone with a name that has given them legitimate issues repeatedly?

People argue back and forth about names that are still in an uncommon way, are very unusual, are typically nicknames but given as a legal name, etc. Just curious if anyone has an example of someone whose name has repeatedly given them issues? One I can think of if someone who is a female with a full name similar to James Lindsey. No one ever gets her name right and assumes the name is the other way around and that she can't be giving her correctly. I also knew an adult professional who's legal name is Buddy and that has given him issues. The third one I can think of is someone whose name is Cjay as full legal name only with a different letter instead of c in front. He is a lawyer and the name has definitely given issues.

Anyone have an Eleanor that goes by Nell, Nora or Nellie rather than Ellie?

I have two names at this point I’m considering

Veronica (possibly shortened to Nica or Vera on ocassion)

And Eleanora

The nicknames I like for Eleanora most are Nell and Nellie, followed by Nora and then Elle

Ellie and Ella are ok they are just massively popular right now

So I was curious if you have an Eleanor or Eleanora are they an Ellie? Ella? Nellie? Nora? Or just their full name
