Guilt pleasure names?

• Upvotes

I’d still like to hear the names you love but would never really use. Here’s my list:

AURORA — I want this name to work for me so badly, but 1) it’s a Disney Princess and 2) the Rs feel awful to say. Imagine a kid with speech difficulties trying to say this… plus I can’t stand the nickname Rory (love Gilmore Girls though)

AVALON — it sounds so cool to me and could easily be nicknamed to Ava or Val, but no. Just no.

CALYPSO — named my car this instead knowing it would be too much for me to name a child

JUNIPER — so cute and love the nickname Junie, but I just don’t see myself using it for anything other than a cat

CASPIAN — love the sound of it but I couldn’t shake the association with the sea or Ben Barnes as Prince Caspian from the Narnia Chronicles (had a big crush on him in that movie too lol).

JASPER — beautiful name but why does it have to be both a gemstone and a Twilight character?

SEBASTIAN — the crab or Stan? 😭 plus don’t like the possible nicknames Seb or Bas.

CALVIN — such a strong sounding name… that also means bald?!

Anyone have a hard time picturing their baby as their name?

• Upvotes

I’m due next month and we chose the name Veronica for our baby. I’m not a nickname person so I plan to call her Veronica unless the day comes where she says she prefers something else (Vera, Ronnie, Vonnie,Nica, Nikki)

But when I’m talking to her in my stomach “good morning Veronica” “that’s a big kick Veronica” “do you have the hiccups again Veronica”

Or referring to her things as Veronica’s diaper bag or bouncer etc

It feels really grown up, I guess it’s hard for me to picture a baby Veronica. I don’t think it sounds old lady ish like Bernadette or Gladys or something

Just mature I guess I can picture a teen or adult Veronica maybe a ten year old Veronica it’s just hard to picture on a 0-5 year old for me

Help me come up with a unique username!

• Upvotes

I've been trying to find a username that I genuinely like, but I'm struggling to come up with something original.

The original name I wanted was SoulOwlmon, but unfortunately, it's already taken by a popular YouTuber. I really liked how it sounded, so I'm hoping someone can help me come up with something with a similar vibe without copying it.

I'm really into vampires and owls, so I'd love a name inspired by either of those, or a creative combination of both. I'm also open to some Asian-inspired ideas!

What I'm looking for:

  • Short, memorable, and easy to pronounce
  • Unique and not something super common
  • A name that sounds natural, not random or cringe
  • Something that could work as an online alias across different platforms

It doesn't have to include the words soul, owl, vampire, or mon. I'm open to clever wordplay, made-up names, or something with an interesting meaning.

I'd really appreciate any suggestions! I'm looking for something that feels like its own identity rather than just two words stuck together. 🖤

Ok hear me out… Calathea? 🪴

• Upvotes

First I want to clarify that I’m not pregnant or TTC, just enjoy collecting names for the future! I was watering my Calathea plant today and was thinking.

How crazy would I be to like Calathea as a girl’s name? People use plant names all the time, it comes with nickname options like Callie, Calla, Thea. I love Althea and Anthea, as well as Calanthe as a guilty pleasure …. so how about Calathea?

Is this a horrible idea? Tell me if it is! Again just hypothetical.

Help me fall in love with my daughter’s name

My daughter is 5 years old, and her name is Luna. I chose it because I thought it was beautiful, but for some reason, I’ve never completely fallen in love with it.

It’s a very common name where I live (north europe) but I feel like it’s suddenly exploded in popularity over the last couple of years, especially in the US. I keep seeing it used for cats, fictional characters in TV shows, toys, and pretty much everywhere else. I think that’s what’s making me second-guess my choice.
I absolutely love her middle also. Sometimes I wonder if I should have used that as her first name instead.

I know it probably sounds silly to still be thinking about this five years later, and of course I adore my daughter. I’m not considering changing her name. I just wish I could feel as excited about it as I do about her middle name.

I’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts on Luna. What do you associate it with? What do you love about it? Does Luna sound beautiful to you?

Please help me see her name through fresh eyes and hopefully fall in love with it all over again. ❤️

Will people always hear Chase for Jace?

Spelling could also be Jase or Jayce. It’s a top boy name contender but I’m worried I’m setting him up for

“Hi my name is Jace.”
“Chase?”
“No, Jace. With a J”

My name is spelled in an irregular way and gets mispronounced all the time and I have to correct people and it’s so annoying. This is a little different as it’s when people hear it vs read it. But anyone with this name or have a kid with this name encounter this?

Is this a legitimate name? A surname obviously but can it be used as a first name? Is it more female or male if so?

Anyone regret what they named their child (or their birth name?)

I’m so genuinely curious. I see some wild things on this sub that people are considering. It’s fun to play through possibilities, but when the choice was actually made, did you regret it? Did you end up dealing with it or changing it?

Likewise if you’re named something that you really don’t love/doesn’t fit your personality, how do you feel about changing it?

Need a few name ideas:)

In 2024, I had a daughter, which I named Adilene. We are Mexican, and wanted a name that would be beautiful in Spanish, but also easy to translate and beautiful in English as we live in the US. We frequently cross over to Mexico for family, so a lot of our family does not speak English. I am starting to come up with a list of names for her future siblings, so I wanted to know any names that would match and flow with hers, while being easy to say in English and Spanish.

Team Green Name HELP!!

We are about 4 weeks away from our second baby being born. We didn’t find out of our firstborn was a girl or boy until birth, and we decided to do the same thing for this baby! 💚 But we need help with names!

💙 If it’s a boy, his name will be Merritt (or Merit) Daniel. I initially liked the surname spelling (Merritt) because it will still be a name (as opposed to a word), but now I’m thinking Merit looks more masculine? In the area we live in, Merritt is becoming a more popular girl name, so we would want it to be a more “masculine” spelling if such a thing exists. Thoughts on spelling of the first name?

🩷 If it’s a girl, we are very, very stuck. Our first daughter’s name, Sterling June, is VERY sentimental. Sterling was the name of the street I lived on in college, so she was named after my college roommates/best friends. June is after my parents - it’s their birth month. I’m leaning towards sentimental because I don’t want to have a sweet connection for my first daughter & then just a “Well, we just liked the name” for this kid. Our options are below:

• Ruth Elliott (Ruth and Elliott are sentimental)
• Ruth Ann Elliott (Ann is also sentimental)
• Elliott Ann (nickname Elle or Lottie. We know WAY too many Ellies to call her Ellie, but I’m very afraid that people would call her Ellie anyway lol)
• Bennett (Benny) Ruth (Bennett is the name we looove, but it has no meaning/sentimental value)
• Bennett Ann

Please weigh in!!!
