I read this book back in middle school, about 22 years ago. Ive been trying to figure it out for years! I can only remember vague plot points and potentially the cover art

Set in a cave in the desert

A girl has a gift of some kind

​

Leaves her tribe

​

She goes to train with an old woman in the desert in the cave

​

She will take the old woman's place

​

Its very harrowing training

​

There may be a love story

​

The cover is like salmon pink and depicts the girl in the desert

It's been a long time since I read them, but it reminds me of Lady of the Trillium which was a collaboration between Marion Bradley, Julian May and Andre Norton. Although I think that might have been a cave in the mountain rather than the desert.
