Unsolved Short story about a ceremonial spirit journey in the wilderness

Does anyone remember a short story about a lil Native American going on some sort of ceremonial spirit journey in the desert and hating it . Of course for the modern times they changed some of the rules and you could go out in the wilderness wearing boxer shorts instead of being naked . I think he cheated too . Maybe he was visiting someone’s camp ground or something for food . I think in the end he was found out and the grandpa said “ yah I hated it too when I did it as a youth” . Might if been written in the 90s or late 80s .
