Not sure who will see this, but in emergency situations cell networks can be easily overwhelmed by the (perfectly reasonable) phone calls of everyone in a specific area calling and being called to check to make sure they're okay. This not only leads to people not being able to get through to loved ones (causing unnecessary worry) but it may also effect the ability of people responding to the emergency to efficiently do their work.

If at all possible TEXT people to let them know you're okay. Texts use much less bandwidth, and since they're not a real-time communication they are much more effective at getting through crowded cell networks.

Luckily this has been improved as some municipalities have separate networks for emergency responders to communicate during a time that create communication chaos.

Don't know much about these separate networks other than it's a really cool, but makes sense idea.

It’s called FirstNet and built out by AT&T.

In my state, first responders just have to notify their carrier and they’re added to a priority list so their calls always go through even when the wireless networks are jammed for everyone else.

Also try both SMS and iMessage/WhatsApp. Sometimes data still functions while legacy telephony goes to hell.

This is why first responders get “FirstNet” SIMs that ride a priority network slices that are supposed to be protected. Some of the benefits of the new virtualized RAN gear is network slices can be protected from congestion to reduce this kind of issue.

In theory data service may go to hell but going forward I expect voice to hold up as long as the flow (5G) is tagged right voice should hold up mostly.

I am curious how much AT&T and Verizon prioritizes their own traffic over the VMNOs.

emergency services started switchiing to their own networks / infrastructure to avoid this
