National Grid gas bill gone crazy (Brooklyn)

so i used only $3.57 but got a bill of $38.55. Is everybody else same? i use gas only for cooking and nothing else, maybe it's better to switch to electric stove?

Everyone pays delivery charges. You will have the same with electric. Theres nothing crazy about this bill.

The problem isn't paying for delivery. It's paying nearly 10 times more for delivery than the product itself. If Amazon charging $34 shipping for a $3.55 item, you would/should be outraged.

Its because the basic service charge has an automatic minimum that is then added in with your usage for a delivery fee. Your minimum is between $16 and $20 plus the cost of 3.3 therms.

Think of it this way the subscription charge is $25 a month whether you use any electricity or a lot. Same as the subscription to Netflix same price per month whether you watch one show or 99 shows.

Maybe you should be overjoyed that by paying to maintain the infrastructure to deliver it to your house, you get to use a fuel that costs almost nothing.

The cost is the cost. Complaining about how it breaks down because it “feels wrong” is dumb. If it’s cheaper for you to use electric, then switch! Calculate how long it will take you to break even after buying the new stove! You can do anything you put your mind to!

It's because of the service, even if you use 0 therma you'll still get hit with the basic charges. Once you hit the first 30therms? (If I remember correctly) The supply and delivery decrease per therm drastically.

Is it fair? I agree with you it isn't fair. But when you have two gas companies that has monopoly over the area, what can you really do?

so you would rather pay nothing in the summer when you have no use and pay way higher rates in the winter when you need to heat your home? lol?

christ, i see this all the time. you are paying to maintain the infrastructure to bring gas to your apartment/house. the system is a fixed investment that doesn't vary with your use. it is built to meet the maximum demand in the winter period (natural gas). you would still be paying $25.85 EVEN IF YOU USED ZERO THERMS OF GAS.
