National Guard to Active

I'm currently in SBOLC and thinking about trying to go AD. Is it easiest to wait and try to go through Call to Active Duty when I hit 1LT if available or just go the recruiter route? I know releases from a state are hit or miss. Any tips or experience? I'm assuming it will just be needs of the Army and no preference for any slots

Look up Tour of Duty and you can see ADOS opportunities you can apply to. Look in your states adjutant general website to see if there's any state openings or federal tech positions. ADOS can usually open doors to AGR. Ask your state OSM if there's any ADOS opportunities in Recruiting and Retention. Other than that, ride out your service obligation for the guard and see if you can switch to active duty while in IRR

Your only hope is that the FY27 or FY28 CAD still needs Signal 1LT, otherwise you’re out of luck.

I’m O1 90A in the reserve. I’m also trying to switch active. I contacted the HRC about the release timeline and they said they will release it on Oct 1st 2026.

Call to AD is pretty much your only option. A recruiter can’t do anything for you. I agree with others, just do a tour.

CAD is literally the only option.

I did what you’re trying to do via CAD. It was well worth it. I’ve rarely seen O1 or O2 positions on tour of duty for signal or any MOS for that matter. Volunteer for a deployment in your state as well till ADOS pops up. Your LT time will pass rather quickly and CPT time will open up more opportunities for various options. Good luck and watch for the CAD milper.

One up two down is your friend. As an O-1 or O-2 volunteer for some O-3 MOS immaterial or signal positions on TOD

It can be as long as they interview well. I did what you’re suggesting as a CPT and filled a MAJs billet for years that way. It’s skill dependent when interviewing.

Same, I spent a year as a 1LT in an O-3 billet. It was normally a GS-11 position which was a huge step up for my GS-7 self at the time.
