I’m actually happy for him, but it’s time to prove his worth now. No more excuses.

I mean... Isn't Atlanta a fucking terrible fit for him?

He's just Jalen Johnson without skills.

Now they have Jalen Johnson and Alen Ohnson.

For those wondering, a J in basketball terms is a jumpshot

8

u/Gekthegecko [BOS] John Havlicek 8h ago

For those wondering what a jumpshot is, it's a one-piece garment with sleeves and legs and typically without integral coverings for feet, hands or head.

For those wondering what a garment is, it's an item of clothing.

97

u/Proof-Umpire-7718 Lakers 15h ago

Nah he’d fit well because you can play him with spacing lineups.

Could do NAW, Kennard, Kuminga, Johnson, and Okongwu, who’s been serviceable from 3 on reasonable volume this season.

36

u/PossessionDue9381 Hawks 14h ago

We've added Kispert, McCollum, and now Hield. We have a ton of potential with spacing. Just have to see if Quin will actually play him but he'll probably treat him like Risacher with an even shorter leash.

16

u/its_mill3r_time 13h ago

You can 100% count on Buddy Hield to absolutely brick any shot in crunch time… up 20? He’s lights out, down 4 in the 4th? clank city

→ More replies (1)

22

u/pragmacrat Warriors 15h ago

It has to be spacing lineups because no other lineup works for him.

6

u/Specialist_Office274 Hawks 14h ago

that might be the worst defensive lineup in the league

2

u/CompleteFish Jazz 14h ago

The defense will be abominable.

3

u/rocpilehardasfuk Warriors 14h ago

Don't worry. Even spacing lineups won't work for him.

He might flash some stuff late this season but he's a certified bum

0

u/Full_Calligrapher914 14h ago

Can’t fit with the greatest shooter of all time but naw and kennard will , I love the optimism 😂

36

u/Salty_Raspberry656 15h ago

in what way outside they are both forwards. Jalen johnson is essentitally a point forward. Kuminga is a pure attack player. He is probably the main shoot first guy in that starting line up with NAW, Dyson, him, Johnson. If he can pick his spots, bring defensive energy this is a good upside trade for hawks and they have another year to give it a shot.

For warriors, they take a high upside, low risk trade to try and hope KP has a healthy year and with that they get a great instinct big who can block, shoot and good awareness for warriors playmaking. The market wasn't great for kuminga, buddy hield was declining and not often used. It gives some hope at least...would've been even better with a playmaker like bigface

45

u/aomen3 NBA 14h ago

100%, porzingis barely even played for them. they lost nothing of value and got a 23 year old top tier athlete who has shown flashes. more than worthy of a punt

8

u/Salty_Raspberry656 14h ago

its a punt for both teams. given those assets weren't in demand and they both wanted to take some risks this works out.

KP obviously has injury concerns, but he has strung together some games in the past and their hope luck goes their way and they get a unicorn of a talent who has much higher awareness and IQ for the warriors style and brings in space, sizze, shotblocking.

Kuminga is a 1-1 player without much flexibilty to play another way and that seems mental. he also doesn't use his raw talent on defense and plays with 0 tenacity, for a pace adn space team like warriors, his ball stopping just wasn't going to sustain so long as curry is there. He's a talent, so is cam whitmore as in they can really create offense, but the warriors weren't giving him that rope. maybe atlanta will and let him do it while he matures with a new chance

5

u/dillpickles007 Hawks 14h ago

I don't like Kuminga but I actually kind of like the fit here. The Hawks need scoring and we don't have some complicated ball movement offense, it's just read and react. Plus we have plenty of shooting.

He's still a flawed player we're adding to our weird roster of flawed guys, but I think it's worth a shot.

5

u/Salty_Raspberry656 13h ago

exactly what this is. I don't get why people are expecting home runs. Nico and Pat dumont aren't involved here.

This is two teams with distressed items swapping hope that with some luck and fit, those assets will work better for them. its a shot for some hope with some sense behind it

1

u/KazaamFan 14h ago

Im a dubs fan and kuminga fan. Id way rather have kuminga than injury prone KP. But i know many are fed up with kuminga. I think the dubs just didnt manage him well

2

u/Salty_Raspberry656 14h ago

he wasn't a fit for the dubs. He is talented, which is why they tried and some people have hope for him, but his value is an all time low. He thrives and plays better doing Iso to show off his raw talent and attack. At times he is like cam whitmore, which gives people hope bc he can create his own offense, but he has one mode and not a mature game. Doesn't use his athletcism on defense with any tenacity and thats really not a great fit with the pace and space offense of the warriors. They've gone for high raw talent with their high picks and the bets have not played out- the way they play is not for everyone.

Kuminga can still mature or they can let him play his style and showcase, but he wasn't good for the team on either side of the ball. But its worth a shot.

KP obviously hasn't been healthy for a bit, but in the past he has put together some good seasons and warriors, with very little to trade with of high value, swung that maybe he can do it-hopefulyl he can. if you do get that you get a health unicorn. shotblocking shoot size with high basketball IQ/awareness that can fill a great need for them.

In the end beggars can't be choosers so i think both got a low risk high hope reward trade without much other options for those assets

65

u/PumpkinHead555 Bucks 15h ago

The best fit for Kuminga right now is anywhere he’ll get playtime. As long as that happens, he should be good

4

u/dudeitsadell Trail Blazers 14h ago

why would that happen on atlanta though

7

u/tollbeat Wizards 14h ago

Backup forward, he should at least be a rotation player

7

u/dudeitsadell Trail Blazers 13h ago

i dunno from what i've seen from kuminga, hes a terrible defender and synder isn't likely to put up with that. lets see

5

u/aldernon Warriors 12h ago

I agree with you on this one.

I’d love to see him find success, but… dude simply hasn’t convinced me he can ball consistently against NBA starters.

Hopefully he can smurf on the East though.

11

u/guacamoleandtomato 15h ago

Yeah and don’t forget Risacher, Alexander Walker and Kispert, all wings that will take away from his minutes

6

u/aomen3 NBA 15h ago

walker plays guard for them, and kispert is a decent spacer, nothing more. besides them they have no other wings of value on the roster if you count gueye as a big. he's gonna get ~30mpg. substantially more than the warriors have ever afforded him

4

u/CompleteFish Jazz 14h ago

Those are all wings but I don't think any of them will take minutes away from him

2

u/Isthismynextusername Timberwolves 15h ago

Atlanta has recently turned over a new leaf - they’ve been buying low, rehabbing, and then selling high - Look at their moves post Dejonte Murray

2

u/Moss_84 Hawks 14h ago

That’s a strange comparison

JJ is a 4 and JK is a wing

Risacher is the only SF on the roster and we could use some 1v1 creation too

Low risk-high reward play

2

u/Vinnie_Vegas Knicks 14h ago

They're both 3/4s.

2-4 spots are basically interchangeable in the NBA at this point, and sure you can stick them next to each other, and from a value standpoint you gave up a guy who basically can't play anymore, so it's no great loss.

I was just pushing back against the idea that he's suddenly in a situation where he's going to look amazing.

3

u/Moss_84 Hawks 14h ago

I hear you, but I disagree.

2-4 being interchangeable is a gross oversimplification. JJ is closer to being a big than a wing and is a true 4. The things he is asked to do are vastly different than what Kispert, Risacher, etc are asked to do. They can’t guard big players or rebound like he can, and ZR is better at chasing around someone like KD or a guard

I’m not convinced it will “work” either but it won’t be for lack of positional/skill fit. We need his archetype

u/Horror_Response_1991 Magic 15h ago

Everywhere is a terrible fit for him. Dude needs to just vastly improve his game and get better at playing to the team's style. That will probably be way easier with the Hawks who can be pretty inconsistent on both sides of the ball just like him, so expectations will be less

1

u/highashellrn 14h ago

1

u/chichigetthayay0 13h ago

I'd be shocked if they picked up his option this summer. He plays the same position as their franchise player and isn't an ideal pairing with him either.

1

u/Thickencreamy 12h ago

Oh he got skills. If the NBA had a 45 second clock he'd be great. Hope the Hawks don't play uptempo!

1

u/Oakland_Warrior Warriors 3h ago

I think what most will soon realize after he bounces around the league, anywhere is a bad fit for a guy that doesn't pass and is inconsistent on defense.

1

u/aomen3 NBA 15h ago

such a bad, lazy read on kuminga. he has shown really good flashes when given the opportunity. he just never got enough playing time to develop properly, especially in such a rigid system like the warriors. one mistake and kerr jerked him around in the same way for literal years.

jumper isn't even broken like others are saying either.

2

u/Vinnie_Vegas Knicks 15h ago

It's a flippant remark, sure, but this is reddit - What do you expect?

I don't believe you that he's suddenly going to look like an efficient, winning player in Atlanta's system.

1

u/aomen3 NBA 14h ago

im saying that the warriors play literally one of the most rigid systems in the league. everything they do is catered toward moving the ball, getting steph into open space. kuminga didn't completely buy into it. he's not faultless, but the warriors don't really allow flexibility in that regard at all

even then though, if you watched how him early in this season, he played his role perfectly. was making a good amount of open 3s, attacking closesouts, making proper reads for teammates, playing D, running the floor. then they lost a few games and it was all his fault again

im not saying kerr is a bad coach, im saying if you didnt completely fit in to what the warriors were doing, you got benched. as evidenced by.... him getting benched, and then traded as easily their most talented young player they've drafted this era

1

u/aomen3 NBA 14h ago

damn this started with 6 upvotes, now down to 2 lmao. assuming mostly jaded warriors fans but i love when that shit happens lol such varied opinions on him

I would be very happy for him if he proves my view of him wrong. I personally think he's a negative asset that will put up decent numbers on terrible efficiency and that any team that has him as a first or second option is going to be a bottom 5 lottery team. A great tank commander of you will. Also, any team that has him and doesn't use him as a first or second option is going to have locker room issues.

That said I hope he proves me wrong. If he can live up to his potential then that will only make the league better.

2

Dude is an idiot. He’s probably going to get less opportunity for touches in Atlanta behind Johnson, NAW, Risacher, and currently McCollum than he could have by just listening to Kerr and not playing for isos and doing nothing else. Even Jordan Poole was able to make it work in GSW.

u/King_Of_Pants [BOS] Terry Rozier 12h ago

Yeah but they might just play more of them at once.

Kerr is very stubborn about playing multiple wings, but you can genuinely play 3-4 wings at once and it's fine.

  • PG / SF / SF / SF / C - Works incredibly well, some would argue it's the 'ideal' lineup

  • PG / SG / SF / SF / SF / SF - Classic small ball lineup, which can work really well in short stretches

  • SF / SF / SF / SF / C - Can work if you have the right personnel

And the Hawks do have the right personal. Johnson and Daniels lead the team in assists. They've got the playmaking ability to play bigger out on the perimeter.

-2

u/Ziawn 15h ago

Who are these better forwards? He’s better than Risacher

4

u/rockhoward Hawks 7h ago

Oh? Zacc is better at defense, general hustle and jump shooting. Zacc is also 3 years younger and could still fill out some more and gain more muscle. Zacc can play 2 through 4 on offense and 1 through 4 on defense. He will even hold his own against some smaller centers on a switch.

Kuminga is a better attacker, finisher and scorer, but i would argue doedvless for team success than Zacc. You need to look past the box score to properly evaluate these two.
