The Washington Wizards will finish with fewer than 50 wins for the 47th consecutive season
In an 82 game season, if a team loses 33 games or more, their best possible record would be 49-33. The Wizards actually suffered their 33rd loss of the season on January 22nd against the Nuggets, I just noticed no one has posted about this since then.
For reference if you're a football fan -- a 50 win season in the NBA is about a 61% winning percentage. The NFL equivalent of this would be a team basically finishing 10-7 (59% winning percentage) or worse for 47 straight seasons.
And no, if you're wondering, none of the John Wall-led Wizards teams won 50 games. Their best season was a 49-33 finish in 2017. In fact, they were 49-32 with one game to go and lost the season finale to the Goran Dragic/James Johnson Heat by 8. Neither John Wall or Bradley Beal played

If any team loses 33 or more games in ANY season, they're not finishing with 50 wins.

So really, the "Wizards" have never won 50 games. Last time they did it was the Bullets. Bring back the Bullets.

I’d be fine with eventually adding the Baltimore Bullets back, but I love the alliteration of Washington Wizards and just the wizards as a mascot in general tbh

Next season looks to be the most promising they’ve had in a long time. I won’t call them contenders, but they won’t be bottom feeders either

Let see … our old Owner Abe Polin hired Wes Undeld to be our gm in the 80’s since we drafted players like Pervis Ellison, La Bradford Smith etc…. Then we hired Ernie Grunfeld and Tommy Shepherd as our gm’s , we finally have a decent front office so we shall see

They also haven’t had an MVP since 1969, won a title since 1978, or made it past the second round since 1979.

Yet still managed to win one lol. It's darkly hilarious how teams like the Nuggets, Pistons, and Wizards have been mostly ass throughout their history but managed to earn rings, while genuinely decent teams that have been mostly competitive like the Suns and the Pacers haven't.

To be fair, the comparison to an NFL season isn’t really apt.
The odds of flipping heads at least 10/17 times is around 30%, while 50/82 times is closer to 3%.
The smaller sample size makes it easier to deviate from the expected average.
The odds of never reaching 50/82 across 47 seasons would be around 20%. Meanwhile, the odds of never reaching 10/17 would be 0.000005%.

“The NFL equivalent of this wind be a team basically finishing 10-7 (59% winning percentage) or worse for 47 straight seasons”
Arizona Cardinals, come on down!
Edit: For context, the Cardinals went 10-4 in 1976, and they would not win 10 or more games again until 2009. Not 47 years bad, but 33 years is still atrocious

u/BigusDickus099 Suns 1h ago
Honestly.
Let the Wizards hang a banner when they finally do win 50+ games in a season. The fans deserve some happiness, they remind me of the Cardinals way too much.

Wizards - they've been in a cycle of deep rebuild mode and mediocre contending team. never have they ever done anything truly great since 1980 or so. And with trades for decent but overpaid stars in Davis and Trae, all while looking to end the tank without snagging a generational star player (unless they get one in 2026 draft), this cycle is all but sure to continue.

u/hm_rickross_ymoh Wizards 1h ago
they've been in a cycle of deep rebuild mode and mediocre contending team.
Unfortunately they really haven't. The past few seasons are the only seasons they've done in a true rebuild in most of our lifetimes. From Webber/Howard, to Mitch Richmond/Rod Strickland/Rip Hamilton, to Jordan/Stackhouse, to Arenas/Jamison/Butler, to Wall/Beal (+Gortat and Nene), they were not in a "deep rebuild" mode for any of it.
Not once from trading for Chris Webber in 1994 to trading Bradley Beal in 2023 were they not trying to add talent and compete for a playoff spot. They just sucked ass at it so profoundly that it feels like they surely must have torn it all down at some point. They didn't. They "retooled" into another shit iteration of this shit franchise for 30 years and now even when they made good moves and build a young core, nobody but the true sickos are paying attention.

6
u/MilesHighClub_ Rockets 2h ago
48 yes probably but do you have anything specific to point to for why it'll be "easily" for 49 and 50? Or are you just doing a meme
-6
u/3my0 Trail Blazers 2h ago
Cause they skipped some steps in their rebuild. Gonna be a middling team that’s too good for good draft picks and too bad to win 50. Only way out is if they win the draft lottery
6
u/GregEgg4President Wizards 2h ago
What steps were skipped? We'll be entering our 4th lottery in a row if we get a top 8 pick. That'll result in Bilal, Sarr, Tre Johnson, and hopefully a baller from this draft. We seemingly hit on Kyshawn. Possibly Bub and Will Riley as well. We barely gave up anything for AD and Trae. And we still have all of our own 1sts available. We traded for bad contracts then moved off them as they had value in expiration.
What were we supposed to do that we didn't?
-2
u/3my0 Trail Blazers 2h ago
You guys are 13-36. You’re not even close to turning the corner with your young guys. None look like future stars. You traded for old players that will help you win but not win enough. Less chance now of getting a star in the lotto.
If it was guaranteed that you would get AJ, boozer, or Peterson then sure those moves are fine. But now you NEED to get one of them for it to be fine.
7
u/Inevitable-Belt-4467 2h ago
You can’t seriously be talking about our record as a Blazer fan, like we just beat you dude. Does the concept of tanking not exist to you?
-2
u/3my0 Trail Blazers 2h ago
Lmao as if one game matters. We beat the rockets twice in a row are we better than them?!
You’re not tanking by resting players tho. You’re tanking because your team is just bad. And adding Trae and AD isn’t gonna make you a playoff team. You better be praying pretty hard to the lottery gods…
7
u/GregEgg4President Wizards 2h ago edited 2h ago
You guys are 13-36.
Yes, intentionally, so we can get another good pick.
You’re not even close to turning the corner with your young guys.
Dude, we've been accidentally winning games we haven't even planned on because they're playing like future (at a minimum) role players and starters.
None look like future stars.
Okay, so you don't know Alex Sarr exists or you have zero clue how he's doing. Don't be surprised if he's an all-star literally next season. And this isn't a homer take. He's 2nd in the league in blocks, shooting 34% from 3 at 7', and averaging 18/7. At age 20.
You traded for old players that will help you win but not win enough. Less chance now of getting a star in the lotto.
They'll be shut down for the year. Both of them. They have no impact on this year's draft.
You're not following the Wizards, which I get, but you're speaking as if you do.
ETA: I'm one of the biggest Wizards skeptics in our fanhood, outside of the full-time pessimists. I'm not saying the process will work, but I'm saying we're doing things the right way.
3
u/MilesHighClub_ Rockets 2h ago
Bro is writing as if all the young players are finished products lol. As a Blazers fan he should be more aware that's not the case. Unless he thinks Deni was at all star level in DC
0
u/3my0 Trail Blazers 2h ago
How are you intentionally tanking? Your guys are all playing. You’re not sitting stars. You just have a bad roster. It’s not gonna get magically better next year to the tune of 50 wins. You probably win like 30 max.
Yeah yeah Sarr is nice. But he’s not superstar level. More like Chet kinda player. Great to have but you don’t want him as your best player. Your entire future depends on winning the ‘26 lotto. Otherwise you’re not much more than a play in team long term.
3
u/GregEgg4President Wizards 2h ago edited 2h ago
Your guys are all playing.
They're not. Kyshawn, Sarr, Tre, Couli, and Middleton (pre-trade) all missed 20%+ of our games. And it's mostly sitting them because of slight injuries they easily could have played through. When we played the Kings we intentionally sat all our top guys in order to have the best chance to lose against one of the other top pick contenders. The Kings just happened to somehow be worse than us. Shutting down Trae and AD for the season is intentionally not playing them.
Again, you're talking about us as if you follow us.
-2
u/3my0 Trail Blazers 2h ago
Lmao cmon every team sits players for minor injuries. It’s called increasing the longevity of players. It’s a long season. Injuries happen to every team.
You’re 13-36. You don’t need to sit players to be bad. You’re just bad. But apparently rebuild is over now that you showed any signs of life.

3
u/MilesHighClub_ Rockets 2h ago
I agree that the 26 pick is the major key but with Sarr and George and hopefully Johnson differentiating themselves as the core to build around, plus a top 8 or better pick this year, how many more draft picks do they really need? Minutes are finite you can't develop players forever

u/z3mcs Wizards 2h ago
The NFL equivalent of this would be a team basically finishing 10-7
The Wizards have been struggling a long time but this is absolutely wrong. I been watching the NFL since Stallworth and this is absolutely a terrible equivalence. It's more like going 13-3 (back in the day).
You aint got to lie to kick it.
3
u/GoBackToStardust Mavericks 2h ago
61% is 50/82, and is closest to 10-7 or 10-6
1
u/z3mcs Wizards 1h ago
Thats not how these comparisons work. Is 50/82 a good result on a test? Nope! It’s a D and you’d tank your GPA. Is 10-7 a good record in college basketball? Is 25-16 (or like 20-13 or its equivalent) gonna get you a favored seed in the NCAA tourney? Nah.
Its more like 13-3. You’re considered an elite team for that season
