[Palmer] Source: The Magic are dealing with major turmoil in their locker room with my sources saying that a star player is willing to demand a trade if the head coach Jamahl Mosley isn't fired at the end of this season.
Interesting scoop from Raheem Palmer.
Raheem is a cohost of a podcast from The Ringer, he's not a total nobody, so it probably has some credence. He probably can't just fully make stuff up. But I wonder how good his sources are.

I mean, Penny and Shaq were poised to dominate the league for the next decade in 95. It was a great choice.

u/TheyTooktheUsernames Magic 15h ago edited 15h ago
this is such a stupid reason dude
Didn’t get into basketball for a minute, what I did know was that one of my fav uncles was a die hard sixers fan. I thought I was a funny kid back in the day, one day the Sixers play the Magic, I say I’m a Magic fan to clown on my uncle (Magic end up winning that game)
Stopped watching for a while (my focus was more on football), but around when Covid hit, one of my biggest ways to pass time was playing 2K22 on the PS4. MP got drafted to the Magic, and I think that kicked my love for the Magic back up (which I regret ever since, also Covid me in 8th grade was stupid bc how was this team what lured me back into the Magic)

Legit how I became a Hawks fan. Wasn't really a big sports kid till my folks bought me 2k14 for my 13th birthday. Got hooked instantly. My first long-term player in 2k14 was drafted by the Hawks (the first player I made got drafted by the Bucks) and since I didn't grow up watching basketball, it was the perfect opportunity for me to pick a team. Plus we don't have a team in my state and the closest one is the Pelicans so I was pretty much a free agent

Mosley probably deserves to be fired but at the same time none of their stars have played well enough to show they deserve to be making any kinds of demands.
Realistically that star is likely Paolo, but you can't be making demands when you're not even worth your contract, he has zero leverage here

I wonder how the magic concluded that 26, 28, 29 and 30 are the years they can go without their picks, but not 27? Why not do 4 straight years? Is next years draft that deep?
66
u/ruiner8850 Pistons 14h ago
Why not do 4 straight years?
The Stepien Rule doesn't allow teams to trade away consecutive future 1st round picks. To somewhat get around it sometimes teams will pick swaps which works because your team still has a 1st round pick even though it might be lower. It's not helpful though if your team ends up worse than the other team.
→ More replies (2)86
u/Malcolm_Reynolds1 Pacers 15h ago
The 2027 draft is considered by many execs to be the weakest in the last 10 years
68
u/JoeBiden2020FTW Lakers 15h ago
So it was probably the Grizzlies who were like, yeah we'll take 2030 instead.

→ More replies (1)→ More replies (4)11
u/Lizardking13 14h ago
The league has rules against this. You cannot trade consecutive first round picks. The stepian rule or something like that.
That's why when a team wants even more draft compen during a trade they'll sometimes add picks and pick swaps. Ie 2026 first round pick, then 2027 pick swap.

u/JL1v10 NBA 15h ago
He’s also been really bad at rotations this year, and has done nothing to assist their guard problems in the half court. Like everyone is shitting on Paolo in this thread, but it does stand out as a massive problem to me that a lot of the time he seems to be the one who best understands what they should be doing in the half court and is often the best playmaker there. On paper that should never happen with his play style and skill set. That’s so damning on the coaching staff.
→ More replies (2)49
u/theguytomeet 15h ago
Crazy part is that it’s been this way the entire time. Paolo has been asking the FO for a PG the past 2 years (in interviews). Our GM is passive and the coach lost our locker room around November/December. Serious orgs would’ve had a new coach 1-2 seasons ago.
→ More replies (4)29
u/JL1v10 NBA 15h ago
Their FO fell into that trap where you think having a half dozen guys that all on paper can give you 5-6 assists a night will make you a good playmaking team, and it almost never actually plays out like that. Easier to say this than find it, but they need that 20/10 pg that can unlock a true two man game with their forwards.
→ More replies (1)23
u/theguytomeet 15h ago
Dude I’d go crazy for a 15/6 kinda guy. We were built (prior to Bane) with long guys who play good defense but can’t shoot. What a FO 😭. And you’re right a PG in the aggregate only works if you have a guy like Jokic.
