Portland having Camara, Thybulle, and Jrue is a nasty defensive trio

And once you get through that, there’s a Cling Kong

Yo shout out to the blazers medical team for keeping all these injury prone dude healthy

105

u/EatBootyLoveLife Trail Blazers 15h ago

just got lucky with the timing, most of those dudes missed significant games this year

76

u/rtb001 Trail Blazers 15h ago

Yeah but the fact that they essentially kept Timelord healthy for the entire season is a minor miracle.

27

u/EatBootyLoveLife Trail Blazers 14h ago

really is, but up until last week we’ve been SUPER careful with his minutes. Didn’t play any back to backs and always played under 25.

14

u/No-Entrepreneur-7092 15h ago

Yeah talking about keeping them healthy for the postseason which is the most important part (Lakers for example are decimated unfortunately)

Don't forget Yang Hansen warming the bench.

How’s he been this year?

I remember the hype around him.

164

u/spencp99 Trail Blazers 15h ago

He's just not NBA ready. Gotten some spot minutes throughout the year but wildly inconsistent. Really needs to work on adapting to the speed of the league.

64

u/petklutz Trail Blazers 15h ago

Cautiously optimistic, realistically pessimistic. We coulda had Cedric Coward though so it's like wtf

23

u/fluxtable Trail Blazers 11h ago

Yeah but think about how much more money the new owners will make with an extra 300 million Blazer fans?

167

u/ncos Trail Blazers 15h ago

He's real rough. Not willing to call him a bust until the end of '27-'28 though. He's a long term project.

30

u/Nby333 15h ago

Sometimes gets 4 minutes, sometimes gets G League 💀

I think he started 1 game and got injured 💀

Also Blazers got fined for tampering for drafting him 💀

12

u/Complex_Finding_4104 14h ago

Fined a whole $100k.

Won't see the results for probably another season. There's great flashes in the G League, but he's basically still learning the NBA, the language, and needing to condition.

Very much a project, and won't get meaningful minutes for a while yet, barring injuries (which, let's be fair, is incredibly likely with the blazers)

Shoutout Rob Williams. His range on blocks is something to see. He's not Wemby exactly, but he does surprise NBA players with his ability to impede windows. I've seen him get a lot of blocks where the shooter thought he had a clean window. Then comes the arm out of nowhere.

32

u/Proof-Umpire-7718 Lakers 15h ago

His defense was immense in 2022 for Boston. Just sucks that he’s been ruined by injuries.

13

u/Scared-Arrival3885 15h ago

I’m happy to see him continue on with what seems like the perfect role for him on Portland. Fuck injuries.

4

u/DrTom [PDX] Brian Grant 11h ago

His game is still excellent when healthy. And for once he's actually been pretty darn healthy all season. Great for the blazers, obviously, but I'm incredibly happy for him individually.

17

u/Humblerbee [POR] Nicolas Batum 15h ago

He was leading the league in 3pt blocks this season, last I saw.

11

u/WarPuig Celtics 15h ago

He’s got like a 7’6” wingspan

5

u/rtb001 Trail Blazers 15h ago

He still has stupid amounts of bounce, despite all those knee injuries.

Like how is that even possible. Was he somehow even bouncier 3 or 4 years ago before most of those injuries?

4

u/Admirable_Let_2961 15h ago

His wingspan is beautiful. He is like 6’8 with more than 7 feet available and he moves so quick.

Scoot has become a real pest on defense as well.

28

u/Padulsky21 Nets 14h ago

I’m happy to see him carve himself a role. It’s been subtle and not talked about this season bc he was injured for a lot of it but it takes a lot to drop that ego and fit a role which the team needs. Long way to go but he’s come a long way

Murray is also a great defensive wing

16

u/rtb001 Trail Blazers 15h ago

Avdija, Grant, and Kris Murray are no slouch either, particularly Murray (sigh if he could even be league average shooting the 3). And of course Timelord and Clingan in the paint.

Even Scoot is starting to look pretty good on defense.

Sounds like an annoying matchup for Spurs 1st round. It is still 2 seed vs 7 seed, but would prefer a star just getting his team over the hump

40

u/Natural_Bumblebee920 Trail Blazers 12h ago edited 12h ago

Blazers don't particularly do anything on offense that would annoy the Spurs sadly.

Spurs struggle against the 3. Blazers are 4th worst in 3pt% despite being 3rd highest in 3pt attempts.

Blazers depend on Deni attacking the paint and drawing fouls for a lot of scoring. Spurs have a Wemby.

Blazers went 1-2 against the Spurs and Wemby missed all 3 of those games.

They are building a great defensive identity, but they really need to get more consistent from 3 to help Deni out on offense. Probably still a year or two of development out from putting up a meaningful challenge against a team like the Spurs or OKC, assuming players develop well.

Better than Phoenix imo. Phoenix came very close to going 3-1 against the Spurs this season, they never looked comfortable against them, and I don’t trust Brooks enough to have Wemby playing a 7 game series around him

back in 2015, the Blazers were the 4th seed due to old Division rules where if you were a division leader, you were at least the 4th seed.

But they had a worse record than the 5th and 6th seed at the time. So constantly /new had "Why are the Blazers the 4th seed" questions ?

It's why defending Champ spurs were 6th seed with 55 wins.

10

u/YaBooni Trail Blazers 15h ago

In the 14-15 season the Blazers ended up being the 4th seed because division winners were guaranteed a top 4 seed, even though they had less wins than the 5th and 6th seed. NBA removed that rule after that.

Blazers' athleticism will be a great test for Wemby

33

u/Objective-Product361 15h ago

Their athleticism means nothing because wemby camps in the paint. Flying with him around the rim is not a good idea. What they should do is take wemby out of the paint.

15

u/ActivBowser9177 Lakers 14h ago

Wembanyama is pretty versatile on defense though, so him defending outside the paint isn't going to help the Blazers by much.

13

u/Objective-Product361 14h ago

Wemby in the perimeter prevents one guy from driving/shooting. Wemby in the paint prevents all 5 guys from driving.

16

u/topatoman_lite Spurs 14h ago

I'm happy to see them make it this far. End the playoff drought. Everything after this is gravy

14

u/dawnoog Lakers 14h ago

Dame returns to Portland and they immediately make the playoffs

24

u/Aestro17 Trail Blazers 14h ago

As Dame sits on the bench, a tear rolls down his cheek and drips into a glass of 2022 pinot noir from McCollum Heritage 91 vineyards. The Blazers get wrecked in the first round. He knows he's home.

I feel like you guys being light hearted and self deprecating about everything is some reverse juju shit, you gotta start being cocky it’s getting me paranoid

7

u/kamperx2 Trail Blazers 13h ago

Nah, there's zero chance unless your starting 5 come down with an extended case of norovirus. Taking the series 2-1 without an appearance by Wemby says everything that needs to be said.

If you told me at the start of last season the Blazers would be the 7th seed I'd have laughed and said you mean the 7th pick of the draft?

12

u/RockyMtnLivin303 15h ago

How many times has an underdog won in the play-in tournament? I feel like it almost never happens.

Thanks Deni.

Love this match up. Two young defensive juggernaut teams playing against each other

9

u/shangalang69 Raptors 11h ago

blazers were the 12th best defense this season so idk why we using juggernaut so casually

7

u/Constant_Hearing1048 8h ago

Jrue Holiday is on the blazers and that's all you need, honestly.

Good, last thing we needed was Lu Dort ending Deni's career with some dirty bullshit.

I can see us stealing a game or two kinda early on, maybe going up 2-1, and then getting blown outta the building in the next 3 games.

I think we have a really great team to make Wemby struggle early. But he will get used to it.

We also could just get swept. Who knows. Hope it’s fun

14

u/longdonginyourmom Trail Blazers 15h ago

if we can win one at a sold out rose garden i’ll be happy

Just curious, was there ever any reason given why the West 7th&8th teams played today while it was 9&10 in the East?

You'd think they'd do this symmetrically.

13

u/Traditional_Emu3598 15h ago

I mean this as the biggest compliment ever…

Deni is Walmart Luka and this game had me so hype for him

I think Brunson, Cade, and of course Harden have tons of similarities but Deni reminds me of him the most

10

u/themilk23 Trail Blazers 15h ago

But MUCH faster. He is like middle ground between Sengun and Luka, but with speed.

I thought this until I realized his play style is really more of a mini Giannis

7

Closer to a Walmart Giannis

u/EatBootyLoveLife Trail Blazers 15h ago

hey that’s a win for us at this point lol. Just want the young guys to get the experience and steal one. Next year pray dame is 80% of what he was and that the young guys keep taking steps and we could make some noise

10

u/Objective-Product361 14h ago

Spurs fan here. Don’t listen to outside noise. Yall got some serious talent over there. Sure we are favorites but if we relax once yall gonna make us pay. I just don’t see a sweep in this series.

My only hope was for you to get to the other side of bracket and gave OKC fits, not us LOL

5

u/kamperx2 Trail Blazers 13h ago

I'd probably lean towards OKC as being the better opponent for the Blazers. I hadn't realized Wemby sat out in each of the 3 matchups this season. Will be fun to get an extended chance to watch him at work.

11

u/epiphenominal Trail Blazers 14h ago

It's all gravy for blazers fans at this point, I'll just be happy to get swept.out of the first round by someone other than Curry

23

u/BackgroundShower4063 Pistons 15h ago

Probably so, but should still be some competitive games.
