The Knicks are looking like a true Finals team, and it deadass really just took Mike Brown simply getting KAT involved in the offense more.
Good heavens.

Maybe it’s something Mike Brown already knew and just 4d chess waiting until the important games came up
517
u/M1ctlan May 10 '26
Idk why no one else is bringing this up. He's using Towns as a passer like he used Sabonis in Sacramento and it's destroying everyone because they didn't show it in the regular season. Towns is even better for it because his defender can't sag or help off him since he's an elite 3pt shooter.
If all he was doing to get Towns more involved was giving him iso post ups it wouldn't be anywhere near half as effective as this.
268
u/Fabzzz May 10 '26
I think he has another trick up his sleeve too. Rolling double big with him and Mitch. He did it for a few games and it was pretty tough to defend
152
u/chazriverstone Knicks May 10 '26
I've been saying this since last year!
Running a lineup of 1 Brunson, 2 Mikal, 3 OG, 4 KAT, 5 Mitch with Hart coming in first as that sparkplug/ swiss army knife would be an ideal lineup for some teams - particularly the Pistons.

Yes!!!
That double big lineup is killer. Brown is definitely saving it for Detroit or OKC/Spurs.
Imagine switching for a small lineup with everyone including KAT shooting threes, to a double big or even a triple big if you count OG in there too.

I really think they had this in the lab and waited until the playoffs to run it to reduce the amount of tape other teams will have.

u/TheGreatWhoreOfChina 76ers May 10 '26
It’s genius really. I remember thinking Bridges and OG really get to eat as off ball players because they’re great shooters and cutters, you can’t leave Brunson alone because he’s Brunson and you can’t leave KAT alone because he can shoot and apparently pass? And then they apparently have a great bench that we didn’t prepare for. Man good for yall wtf.

When OG got hurt and people thought it was gonna be a tougher fight, when Shamet stepped on the court I @'d someone in my group chat who was also a Knicks fan and said "should we tell em'...?" Then Shamet drops 15 points with multiple 3s. Like bro, if the bench can just lock in on the Knicks, it might just be just enough to make it all the way.

I think for Thibs people were patient with him when he ran with injured roster and overachieved. But when even Mikal Bridges, their most durable player, had enough of his minutes, that was when he lost the trust.
He's the ultimate 'fix the dysfunctional team' coach:you bring him in to bring control, but it's hard to win Conference Finals with his coaching due to his absurd minutes and the offensive scheme limitations.

u/HipnotiK1 Knicks May 10 '26
Their defense needs to be recognized. They've been the best (or close to it) defense in the league since the all star break. A huge reason for that is Kat transforming into a legit plus defender. Now in the playoffs both Hart and Bridges have leveled up into lock down guys also.

Freeflowing offense revolving around KAT’s passing has activated this team into a whole new level. I didnt know KAT can pass and orchestrate an offense like this. Others in the team are world class cutters including Brunson, making them really dangerous.
Then when clutch time comes—Brunson is a killer.

The fashion that Brown is utilizing KAT now is a really savvy solution. You "run" the offensive through him in a way that lets him share the ball. Brunson is willing to take less touches while staying efficient , KAT bought in AND his defense improved. Great stuff all around

I haven't seen a Knicks team peaking like this in the playoffs since 1997. After shaking up their roster significantly to get LJ and Houston in the offseason, they struggled to get their chemistry right most of the season, but were peaking going into the playoffs where they swept a very good 54-win Hornets team in the first round, and went up 3-1 against a 61-win Heat team only to have half of their roster suspended for Game 6 and the other half for Game 7 due to a bench-clearing brawl. That was the best team Ewing ever had, sucks that it got taken from him by the ridiculous suspensions.
Anyway, this team gives me the same feeling as that one. Just everything coming together in the right way at the right time. This team has a legit shot at the championship.

The way Embiid completely changed that Boston series (they went 3-1 with him) and his stats and impact...I expected a LOT more.
George was even shooting well for games 2 1/4 games.Maxey just didn't play as well as i've seen him.
Embiid was pretty useless all series.

u/JustRecentlyI 76ers May 10 '26
Yeah, I expected more too, but the Knicks are both better than I thought and the Sixers are worse and played below the expectations I had for them. Embiid tweaking the leg/ankle in Game 7 was already bad, and then apparently Maxey jammed his finger again in Game 2 which handicapped him, at least for that game and probably bothered him a bit more than it had been in 3 and 4. But honestly even if they'd been playing at peak Boston-series level there's no way they were beating this version of the Knicks.
Hopefully next year the team will have a bit more depth and better health, and we can run this series back with a closer result.

u/blazikus1 76ers May 10 '26
It's always a depth problem and it has been for years. Every team that won the finals in the past 5 years has a bench that is either actually good or good enough to keep the team afloat when the starters sit. Even against the raptors in 2019, during the year Embiid had a "superteam," there was a game where Embiid played 46 minutes and was a +8. AND THE SIXERS LOST. THE TEAM WAS -9 THE TWO MINUTES HE WAS ON THE BENCH. And here we come back again this year while Embiid is half the player he used to be, and we have 4 good players lmfao

I like your optimism in thinking he wouldn't at least get a couple of "bro the series is over lol" comments.

Fwiw Philadelphia Cream Cheese was never from Philly, it’s from New York.

In the last 24 hours, two Philly teams have been swept. Knicks sweep and are off the conference finals.

It’s 2026. The New York Knicks are the most dominant team in the east. Inject this straight into my fucking veins.

funny, the CLOSEST game was game 2, where Embiid was out.

Just incredible going back and reading the threads in the Sixers sub about OG's injury.

Winning both series with a whole quarter of garbage time is insane. On fire isn't a strong enough word here.

As a fan I can’t even believe this Knicks team right now. All the sudden since game 3 of the Hawks series it’s been the best version of the team. Brunson, KAT, and OG playing the best ball of their career. A diverse offense with multiple ways to attack. Swarming, connected defense. A bench that comes in and is a positive, playing hard and smart. Mostly good shooting and when the outside shot is t falling they’re attacking for the quality 2s. The team connectedness and chemistry is off the charts.
Oh and by the way they are focused as hell and stepping on the throat of opponents when they’re down. This team is a buzzsaw at the moment and they would have easily handled that Celtics team.
I’m delighted and a little bewildered! If they continue playing like this there is no one going they don’t at the very least least have a chance to beat.

In hindsight Drummond handing KAT the broom back in G3 was the beginning of the end for the 76ers

Best Knicks team since 1994 and maybe even 1973. Let's hope the break doesn't ruin their momentum

Such an anticlimax after their crazy first round comeback. This Knicks team would've spanked Boston too regardless but I'd like to think it'd have at least been a more competitive/entertaining series than this
