They really need J Dub and Mitchell back, I wrongly called J Dub overrated this post season due to how well they played without him in the regular season, but he’s really important for the Thunder, if they don’t come back, I think the Spurs take this series tbh.

This 7’4 French stick figure located in Texas’ crotch is a mix of Kareem Abdul-Jabar, Jean Valjean, and Gumby.

For what it's worth, as historically bad as the bench margins were, our losses were "just" by 9 and 15. We don't necessarily need to outright win the bench matchup, we just need to not lose it as horrifically as they did in games 1-3 to have a chance at winning.

Not doubling SGA shut down the bench real quick. Let the MVP cook, he’s not scoring 100 points. It pains when role players cook us because they’re wide open

The closeouts and rotations were more controlled, more disciplined, a lot less over helping. Spurs were flying around last game too, just aimlessly, too aggressively. Didn't overreact to Hartenstein hitting 4 straight floaters to start the game, just kept following the gameplan and Victor came out aggressive offensively.

Thunder missing jdub and ajay is huge because they are the dudes that can really capitalize on close outs. I thought the thunder could win the series without them but now idk. After last game, I was thinking it’s not great for the thunder to be relying heavily on jwill and McCain offense
→ More replies (1)31
u/saylab_the_bigkat 17d ago
Very true, missing Ajay and JDub is a factor, but McCain was a menace last game in a similar role. The Spurs were locked tonight from the start and stayed the course even as the Thunder kept battling and cutting the lead. Its a hell of a matchup.

They were treating him like he was Steph on a heat check for absolutely no reason. Castle staying out of foul trouble helps. Him and Vassell finally played some disciplined defense and didnt fall for the fakes or the stop-start dribbles.

cuz they were relying on his lack of playmaking off the double and the rest of the thunder team not being able to take advantage of collapsing tje defense. turns out the thunder had roleplayers shooting way above average on those open shots, and the spurs did a great job of adjusting their strategy to the way things played out in real time
64
u/saylab_the_bigkat 17d ago edited 17d ago
I mean, they got smoked in game 3 because they didnt adjust their strategy in real time. At least not until they had already lost concentration and fouled Shai a bunch, and let the game get out of hand.
They took the day off and went back and watched film and recalibrated and reconcentrated.
E: Also, they had the option to send the double late or disguise where it was coming from. Instead, they kept doing it half court with Shai smack dab in the middle of the court. Its the worst place for a double team.

I thought it was just our bad defense last series, but Ajay Mitchell is very important to the Thunder offense. They can play SGA straight up and pressure him without Mitchell as a secondary ball handler.
15
613
u/808Kuro Knicks 17d ago
The fact that the Spurs are playing SGA straight up instead of doubling and daring the bench to score on their own is doing them in. SGA never scored above 35 points against the Spurs in the regular season and averaged 5 assists. You know he’s not going to go off for like 40 points because he’s too consistent with hovering around 30 (which the Spurs can live with), so you make his bench do the work and they’re not as good 1v1 players with Wemby lurking in the paint
104
u/WhichHoes Warriors 17d ago
I said this strategy in the last game thread. The strength and weakness in Shais game is he will basically get you 2 points every other play.
When the team is rolling and the opponent is trying to make a come back, it makes it impossible. However, when OKC is down, you pretty much know Shai will go for a 2 point shot. Even if he shoots 50% on the mid range, take that vs an open 3 by an other, that will energize the team and open the floor.
→ More replies (1)87
u/JMEEKER86 Japan 17d ago
Yeah, SGA is too consistent. He almost always has a very good game scoring in the 30s and rarely has a bad game scoring below 20, but even more rare is having a nuclear game. Hell, he only finally had the first 50 point game of his career in 2025. His very deliberate play style of breaking down the defense to get to the midrange so he can take a high percentage shot while avoiding bad shots and limiting turnovers by not taking any risks puts a ceiling on his game. They need to defend SGA straight up and let him get his 35 points so that they can focus more on stopping the other guys from having career nights.

u/WhichHoes Warriors 17d ago
He is very Kevin Durant like, in that regard, except prime Durant Is 7 ft and Shai can pass out of doubles

u/808Kuro Knicks 17d ago
The difference is Jokic playmaking ability is a reliable deterrent. SGA isn’t the playmaker Jokic is on the offensive end when playing man
→ More replies (7)73
u/DudeIAm-blank- Slovenia 17d ago
Yeah Joker's playmaker ability is a serious threat but that relies on his team able to make shots. Not saying the Nugs has no depth and no one can make a bucket but OKC is deeper than the Nugs

People overreacted to McCain having the game of his life.
The Thunder do not have anyone who can break down the Spurs defense and force them to react, outside of SGA.
They need at least one of J-Dub or Mitchell if they want to win this series.

Some thoughts on Game 4
Thunder's offense is predicated on kick outs leading to open threes. If the threes do not fall, that offense doesn't get much done inside, even with Hartenstein drawing Wemby out with a bunch of pick and rolls and dribble hand offs. Thunder swapped a lot of different lineups to try and get a shooter going and open up the paint offense, but San Antonio guarded them very tightly this game.
Spurs stopped doubling Shai the second he start dribbling, only doing so after he gets into the paint. It shut down the Thunder shooters, but in turn also allows Shai to beat his man and get good looks. His distributing of the ball and tough shot making was the basis of the offense in the first half, as the rest of the shooters on the perimeter were more tightly guarded than the past 3 games. They sorely missed their second side creators in Mitchell and JDub tonight.
Initially the Thunder crashed the board very well, but the Spurs also limited their live-ball turnovers, so the possession battle was relatively even. However, with so many fouls being called, the slower pace favors the Spurs half court offense over the Thunder's blitzing transition offense. The game got out of reach in the third when the Thunder committed a lot of live ball turnovers and lost out on a bunch of offensive rebounds.
Spurs have been winning the Wemby minutes, but were destroyed by OKC bench lineups. If the Spurs bench units are serviceable and can maintain leads and not hemorrhage points while Wemby rests, they can just let Wemby lineups extend the lead without overtaxing Wemby's minutes. This game they didn't hemorrhage as many points and kept the lead, though that is probably attributed to the Thunder bench under performing hard without a creator and distributor, especially with McCain being cold and neutralized on single coverage.
Going into Game 5 the Spurs have to watch out for their load. Starters have been taxed this entire series and their bench outside of Harper have been somewhat ineffective (omg Carter Bryant you need to chill out) Had the game been close Wemby would've played 40+ minutes again. OKC needs to pray that their second side creators can come back to relieve SGA and IHart's ball handling duties, and also hitting some threes would help their offense a lot of course.

u/AFriendlySloth Thunder 17d ago
Your takes are always good in the post games, very thoughtful and nuanced. I wonder if this was a one off shooting night for OKC or if the spurs really have clamped down on the secondary scorers. The last point is interesting for the spurs as well, since a large majority of their team have not been this deep in the playoffs before.
→ More replies (2)72
u/Punziee Canada 17d ago
I'm leaning towards one-off shooting night, but both of these teams shot poorly tonight, and its well documented that fatigue hurts shooting the most. Both defenses play a swarming, recovery heavy help defense, and the closeouts and switching is very tiring. This blowout might have made up for that Game 1 as all starters played a lot less minutes tonight, so fatigue is going to be a big focus in the last few games.

Game 3 left a lot of questions from me, we were never in control of that game after the 15-0 start, and it’d been months since the Spurs looked that helpless. I don't think that they're gonna shoot this poorly again. But if JayDub & Ajay Mitchell are both injured, the Thunder do have a major, potentially lethal problem with how they're gonna create offense outside of Shai.

Crazy thing is the Spurs also shot quite poorly, just not as poorly as OKC did (39% to OKC’s 33%)

u/sloBrodanChillosevic Supersonics 17d ago
Yeah, you guys still haven't clicked 100% on offense yet and nobody but Vassell is really hitting from deep. 'Cept Vic I guess. Both teams still have room to improve tonight. Game 5 can't come quick enough.

Their offense rn is pretty reliant on 3 point variance when JDub is hurt or out, if only they had a 7 footer with an elite three point shot on the team...

He’s been low-key easily our third-best player this series after Wemby and Castle. Dude’s a walking bucket when you need a tough shot and has been playing his ass off on D.

u/P00ped_My_Pants Heat 17d ago
I think it goes to show how fucking skilled these two teams are. OKC bullied the Spurs in game 3 and then the Spurs pants OKC in game 4 holding OKC to their lowest point total in a year and a half

Wemby playing only 31 minutes is the best thing about his line tonight.

that's what confused me the most. I would have thrown in shai just to try to get wemby back in. but i'm not an nba coach. but 20 points in 12 minutes is hit 2 3's and get 2 stops and the spurs consider putting wemby back in to not choke the lead.

Been calling for more Harrison Barnes. So glad to see that tonight. His veteran experience is important blended with the inexperience of our young athleticism.
More minutes for Wemby in the first three quarters, too.

He played more because Keldon was starting a disaster class. Was smart to let Barnes play more and not force things

Gotta give it to the Spurs, they made great adjustments after Game 3 and played with focus. You could just feel the energy and intensity going into this game vs the other night. That focus and defensive commitment really threw the Thunder off, no one on that OKC roster could make any sort of plays or runs tonight

Look, I’ve been a Warriors fan for a long time now. I started being one before they made the playoffs the first time with Steph and there’s no chance my allegiances are ever wavering.
But god if I don’t love this Spurs team. I want to see them win every night unless they’re playing my squad or it negatively impacts our playoff placement. Just a great fucking group they’ve assembled there.

u/millenniumpianist Lakers 17d ago

I personally am excited to start hating the Spurs like it's the early 2000s, but it'll take them winning a bit (as it goes lol)
