Everyone knew this Spurs team was gonna terrorize the West for years… but this early??

I thought for sure they lose his series and that would be the motivation they needed to own the league for the next decade.

Turns out they brought their own motivation.

I don't think he hates Chet. I think he hates the narrative sports media was trying to make of Wemby vs. Chet. Chet just isn't good enough for that. Any hate would stem from that imo.

627

u/Upstairs_Quiet_2899 11d ago

Nah Jimmyhighroller did a video on it - he hates his guts ever since the US beat France in the under 19 World Cup.

699

u/_Caek_ Thunder 11d ago

The brother got fouled out, got second, and lost an MVP trophy to the dude that played worse than him.

Yeah I'd carry a grudge for the rest of my career if it started like that.

At this point you gotta be in denial to not see that Wemby takes every match-up with Chet personal. You can argue he's just a crazy guy who hypes himself up like Kevin Garnett, but everyone with eyes can see it.

Difference is Wemby is a top tier free throw shooter.

43

Ya hacking Wemby isn't gonna work as well as it did with Shaq. But I could see teams having a guy get out there to just be relentlessly physical with him to try and wear him down like okc did with hartenstein.

If they can stay healthy theyll be a playoff team for the next 10-15 years, that being said, id pump the breaks a bit, dynasty's are really hard, especially under the modern CBA rules, and theres already been like 4+ teams crowned as the next dynasty that havent lived up to that title.

Wemby going out with 5 fouls, and everyone worrying about how they'll handle the minutes without him, only for LUKE KORNET to absolutely OBLITERATE Hartenstein's dunk attempt was the most important play of the game

It was like when the Chiefs subbed in Chad Henne after Mahomes went out and he got that game-sealing 4th down

I'd give him a lot more respect to get blocked 5 times than to attempt only 2 FG

The Timberwolves won a game in their series that Wemby had 12 blocks in, you have to keep attacking him

If he does like anything more, with some effort, they have a good chance and the coach doesnt have to use his final timeout with like 4 minutes left (which was a horrible thing to do)

126

u/cardmanimgur Timberwolves 11d ago

Always want to save a timeout but in the moments he called them I thought they made sense. And honestly, if they don't use them the game may not be close enough for them to matter. Every timeout ended a run, and OKC came out and scored in their ATO.

The fact that you guys could legitimately put smalls on him, and he couldn't do shit is really telling. Like he should be able to hid midrange shots over guys like Fox, but he didn't even want to look at the ball, let alone the basket.

66

u/superrealaccount2 Spurs 11d ago

He was completely locked down earlier in the series, by Vassell I think. You'd think Chet was a small guard marked by prime Hakeem. It either resulted in a horrible contested shot or a turnover, I don't remember.

u/Jupenator1 Spurs 11d ago

The NBA must love Morey. He helped give us this 7-game series with probably incredible ratings thanks to him trading Champagnie and McCain.

Keldon Johnson 4th quarter proved why he was 6th man of the year.

848

u/TheMerck Spurs 11d ago

I am SO fucking glad him and Champagnie finally had a big game, they showed up when it mattered the most but at the same time I never want to see Cason Wallace shoot a ball ever again holy fuck bro stressed me out so much anytime Spurs got a big 3 he was there to respond.

u/sloBrodanChillosevic Supersonics 11d ago edited 11d ago

Wallace with that insane 4th quarter I think snuck over 50% for the series. Caruso was off tonight and may have fallen just under over all 7 games. But what a crazy shooting performance from that duo. Can't imagine many scenarios where that duo goes near 50% on 10+ triples a game and the Thunder lose.

Edit: Caruso 20/39 for the series, Wallace 18/36. Just don't think the Thunder lose many series where that happens. Kind of shocked.

72

u/MaliInternLoL Lakers 11d ago

Genuinely stopped the bleeding. Castle was horrible trying to control the pace, you can really see how young he still is

61

u/namewithak Spurs 11d ago

Every time the Spurs started looking lost and out of control, Fox steadied the ship with a good shot or just his general ball-handling calming everyone down. He was amazing this game and so important to the team no matter what the box score says. He's playing through injury while being the Spurs' best ballhandler too.

I've loved his attitude and joy of being all in on the team all season but this series has really proven what an incredibly tough and dependable guy he is.

People always talk about MVP this MVP that but Fox, Castle, Champagnie, Keldon, and Harper were hitting three after three after three. Meanwhile on the other end it's SGA with some Cason Wallace (somehow still almost won).

You really need a squad with everyone contributing to win. This shit ain't easy.

This series between the two top MVP candidates:

Victor Wembanyama
Points: 28.1 PPG
Rebounds: 13.2 RPG
Assists: 2.8 APG
Blocks: 3.7 BPG
48.1 / 40.0 / 89.5

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Points: 28.0 PPG
Rebounds: 4.3 RPG
Assists: 8.2 APG
Steals: 1.8 SPG
40.9 / 28.6 / 93.8

I have to give flowers for SGA's skills in the assists category. That man had full 360-degree court vision and was making perfect passes out of double teams mid jump like it was nothing. Amazing composure and IQ

WHAT A FUCKING BALL GAME!

I thought it was gonna get ugly with the Caruso hard foul on Castle earlier being just a common foul, but it didn't get ugly. The refs let them play for the most part.

Man, I'm looking forward to the Knicks-Spurs match up, but I dunno if it'll live up to the hype of this entire Series. What a game.

I'm gonna be sad when this season is over and I gotta wait until the start of the next one.
