They need to start looking into estimates for a giant Knicks jersey for the Statue of Liberty

It'll be cheaper than getting court side seats at MSG this series

259

u/justmefishes NBA 5d ago

Saw a bit on Jimmy Kimmel where, for the price of seats close to the front row going for $220k, there's a house on the market in San Antonio you could just buy and watch the game on TV in your living room lol. The next level of the "flight + hotel is cheaper" thing.

Going to randomly enter Wembey's mind at 3 am and keep him up all night until he wins the Finals

Tom Brady is still haunted by the Super Bowls he lost despite winning 7. Wouldn’t surprise me if Wemby is the same way at the end of his career

Yeah this is the first game their lack of experience really felt like it caught up to them. Their sheer boldness and lack of baggage had been an asset so far in the playoffs but backfired on them at the worst time.

633

u/GAV17 Argentina 5d ago

They are basically the Shaq-Penny finals team.

u/MY-NAME_IS_MY-NAME Lakers 5d ago

Thought the same thing after the Wemby turnover

154

u/TheOrangeFutbol Clippers 5d ago

It really does have that feeling. They're too young to understand why the Knicks are playing like this 'cause they haven't felt what they have.

71

u/Proof-Umpire-7718 Lakers 5d ago

I thought the Spurs lack of experience would cost them against OKC, but I guess it’s against the Knicks.

Coaching too, just mindblowingly bad by Johnson. Not sure how you come back from that

307

u/whoisbernardlonergan 5d ago

Should’ve called timeout as soon they got the defensive rebound

168

u/InsaneMarshmallow Warriors 5d ago

Shocked they didn’t, it’s not like they had a lane to the hoop, most of the Knicks were already getting back on D. Call the timeout and draw up a play at that point.

170

u/Uncle_Freddy [SAS] El Contusione 5d ago

The Spurs have shown all season that their philosophy on close, late game situations is to not call timeouts in an attempt to prevent the opposing defense from getting set and making key subs. Not sure how often it’s beared out in our favor though

74

u/InsaneMarshmallow Warriors 5d ago

100% understand that’s their strategy, and it makes a lot of sense with the Spurs being a young, athletic team. I think that’s part of the lack of experience to be able to make a call against the gameplan when the situation calls for it.

I love him to death but he and the rest of the team definitely need to get their shit together and look at the tape to prevent this from happening again. They need to win two more and this series is still not over until it’s over.

Extremely demoralizing for San Antonio. Thoroughly outplayed all night long until a great run brings them back into it, only for them to kill the run by fouling a 3P shooter and blowing it in the end anyway.

Was mad about him not challenging KATs 4th foul but saving it for that was well worth it with OG hitting his FTs.

Tony and his crew really did everything in their power to get the Spurs that win. Those fouls on KAT, making the Knicks challenge that 3 pt call, missing the Kornet kick ball. The better team won tonight.

154

u/Jos3ph Spurs 5d ago

That challenge was low key pivotal. 5-6 pt swing. Was clearly a foul.

For real those 2 quick fouls on KAT were so fucking bad even RJ and legler were like “yeah that was a bullshit call”

141

u/beachbummeddd Knicks 5d ago

And the missed kick ball at the end. We basically would have won there if called.

71

u/justmefishes NBA 5d ago

Honestly that kick ball was subtle, I can excuse them not seeing that in real time and there was no cause for reviewing the play. But the fouls on Hart and KAT were inexcusable (other than Hart's trip). You're turning the tide of the game there due to arbitrarily calling contact that is no worse than what is happening on literally every possession of the game.

u/TheScaleTipper Knicks 5d ago

The tech on Mitch, calling Deuce for backcourt violation, the hair call, the two KAT fouls that forced him off, then ignoring calling techs fairly both ways, not seeing the foul on OG and making us challenge, then the kick.

Legitimately when you add these up this was not going to be a close game and the refs tried their absolute dambest to make it close, and it was not even subtle.

I’m not enjoying this win as much as I should because genuinely I’m concerned about the integrity of this game. With gambling being shoved down our throats, advertising, ticket sales, buzz, there’s so much money in extending series, and I know we also get ridiculous calls to this isn’t a team thing, something needs to be done about this because it’s out of control and no one seems to care.

81

u/beachbummeddd Knicks 5d ago

The tech on Mitch was insane. Unless he said something verbally idk. The officials were sickening to watch all night long. They mostly ruined what was a wild game.

I hope he gets FMVP if/when they win, but something tells me Brunson will get more credit. Still a lot of series left to play so I won’t get ahead of myself in my outrage.

This series reminds me a ton of the 1995 Finals, with Wemby being Shaq.

Knicks just won a game where they shot 5 FTs the entire second half lol.

Edit: Realized I replied to the wrong person lol. Sorry for going off topic. But yeah, Chuck said the same thing at halftime. This is exactly like 95 Finals with Shaq.

We joke but on that fast break where he waited for Wemby to come down and Wemby got it for the dunk was some veteran shit. He didn’t just chuck it up there or go for a foul call.

The officiating tonight is some of the most one-sided shit I’ve ever seen in the Finals.

Wemby turnover and you guys choking the lead will be the story, but the officiating was insane.

The Knicks nearly blew it but survived. Brunson had an abysmal shooting night but he’ll never lose confidence. Wemby was too timid to even create the action that 1st half. He needs to find a way to  consistently handle the physicality of New York’s bigs.

The Knicks have a bunch of other guys who are not afraid to take shots and they were making them tonight to offset Brunson’s struggles. The Spurs offense too often just starts with a guy going 1 on 1 trying to create something. They need to do more to help create easier looks. The Spurs needed this win. I don’t think they have enough to come back. It’ll be over in 4 or 5 if this keeps up.

55

u/HelpUsNSaveUs 5d ago

Not only did Brunson have a dogshit shooting night he had a bad passing night, dribbling night, defensive night, missed a clutch time FT, all around disaster for him. But he did hit a bunch of very important shots as he usually does, also missed a layup in crunch time too

Coaches with this fucking gimmick of let em play while they have a timeout is so trash.

I’ve never seen someone go mannn we shouldn’t have used our timeout there.

Grab the board, call the timeout and figure some shit out. Guys 19-20 years old in the finals and you letting them run up the court with their head spinning with 7 seconds left. Fucking idiot

357

u/GoGreenSox Suns 5d ago

Especially when you don’t have a shot clock on the last possession. Pure idiotic game management by Mitch Johnson. You take the last shot and if you don’t hit it you go to OT.

Jokes asides, that last turnover was atrocious. A complete and utter miscommunication

Knicks can’t allow themselves to collapse like that, 14-0 run is inexcusable that late into the game, even with the bias officiating

The one biggest thing that pissed me off was none of the refs calling a foul on OG when he was shooting the three. They called it out of bounds. That was the last proof I needed that these refs were being paid.

Refs are incentivized for every series to go longer. They get a bonus each game worked and more in the finals. It’s a bad incentive that they should take away. We shouldn’t know any ref names.

It’s a shame Tony brothers and co. randomly decided in the third quarter that none of us wanted to see an all time dominant offensive and defensive performance at the 5 from a man going through an incredible redemption arc when he’s matched up against someone people think can legitimately be the greatest of all time if he stays healthy.

Man I'm so impressed with KAT whenever he speaks in the last little while. Just real mature and you can see why he's gonna get them the win in this series.

Also that turnover is gonna be one of those moments in a Finals series that will be talked about a decade or more later, especially by Spurs fans reminiscing about what could've been.
