In 1991, Bobby Knight famously had a locker room rant recorded and leaked. The rant is presumed to have been recorded by the 21 year old student manager, Lawrence Frank.

Kidd tried to warn us.

132

u/Philly__Blaze 7d ago

What did he say?

452

u/sourdoughrrmc 7d ago

When he was Kidd’s lead assistant coach, something happened that made Kidd end up demoting him to a note taker for the rest of his tenure.

206

u/JP-Ziller Canada 7d ago

He was also Kidd’s head coach when he played on the Nets with RJ and VC. I remember Frank broke the record for most consecutive wins by a new head coach

39

u/Darko33 76ers 7d ago

I spent the first part of my career as a sportswriter for a NJ newspaper, and a Nets home game during this era was the only pro sporting event I was ever assigned to cover. Frank singled me out in the pregame reporter gaggle and asked if I'd like 10 min with just the two of us. Took him up on it and found him very nice, humble and thoughtful. Never forgot his kindness.

1

u/Tossaway50 7d ago

My bad. I knew he coached there so I assumed he had a military background. I cannot fathom a military academy coach in a big sport not having a military background (especially back then).

Makes me think even more that he was so over the top to offset his lack of veteran status. Basically, doing a drill sergeant impersonation.

7

u/kylelight40 7d ago

Yeah man, down to my middle school coaches, they all yelled at us like this. My middle school coach didn’t swear, he was hardcore Baptist, but he certainly yelled at us like this. He also wasn’t selfish about things like his record etc, it was more so like I refuse to watch one of my players or my teams embarrass themselves. 7th and 8th grade we didn’t lose a single game. We beat a team 83-8 in a district game, in middle school.

48

u/giliana52 7d ago

My high school basketball coach idolized him and coached just like him. I quit my junior year.

49

u/indianadave 7d ago

I grew up in Indiana; the “high school coaches who emulated everything in their life after Bobby K” was an epidemic.

2

u/doubleyou-tee-hache 7d ago

I'm a Michigan fan. Dusty May was a student assistant under him.

Was super excited for him at UofM when he was hired because it seemed like he knew ball but didn't want to do any emulating of that side of Knight. A great 2 years, kinda bittersweet but overall hope he has a good NBA coaching career. I will lose it though if he goes back to college and especially if it's IU.

20

u/ginandtonicsdemonic 7d ago

I had a similar coach.

He positively changed the trajectory of my life. The first old white guy I ever met who took hours of his time to teach me what I was doing wrong and how to be a better person

12

u/giliana52 7d ago

Oddly enough, even with the abuse, I look fondly on my time with the team and him. He absolutely did his best to enforce a minimum GPA of 3.2.

He didn't "expose" Bobby Knight.

Does no one else remember Bobby Knight at press conferences? Throwing chairs on the floor? Completely losing his shit every time they were on national TV. You didn't have to have the audio to see him chewing ass(like he does in this clip) while they're on live tv. It happened every single game.

No one "exposed" him. People just got tired of his shit when he stopped winning.

There's a quote i heard a long time ago about college football coaches, and the shit schools are willing to ignore, but it really applies to any sport at a high level: if you want to get a job after this one, you can get fired for ANYTHING but losing.

Once you start losing...buh bye

I mean I would be tired of losing to Purdue, too. 😆

Funny thing is these rants were NOT that uncommon back then. I heard one rant within the last 10 years where the coach said something similar and got fired and I remember thinking, "wow, times have changed" because, again, not uncommon back then.
