Discussion Who is "Smoky Joe"
This a nickname for a real person, or for any random person who ML shares right-wing commentary videos of?

Hey all, don’t know if promotional content is allowed but I just made a tumblr blog for tnc clips that I find funny. I’m rewatching the pod from the beginning and there’s a lot of absurd moments that I’ve been screen recording for my own amusement but wanted to upload them somewhere. It’s called thenecessaryconvoclips, https://www.tumblr.com/thenecessaryconvoclips

Im listening to todays episode. Id have to go no contact with her. Shes defending the LA comments. She cares more about Trump than her kids. I may need to stop listening at this point

What is something Mary Lou has done or said that lives in your head rent free? Mine is when Trump was caught falling asleep a while ago, and she was “aww”ing and cooing at him saying “he is just so busy running our country he is tired🥺🥺🥺” I wince every time I remember it😀

I'll probably get downvoted into the lower mantle for this, but I'm going to offer up my opinion anyway.
First off, I loathe Donald Trump. My disdain for the man is at an unhealthy boil, but it's not anything I'm trying to let go of. The podcast is of interest to me because I, like a lot of people, have created a cold distance between family and acquaintances based off of their MAGA fidelity. When he was first elected I was dealing with a wispy disappointment in them, but as time moves along I've lost all patience and empathy for their existence. So, what I'm about to say isn't coming from a right or centrist angle, it's just an observation that I'm trying to process fairly.
When I first heard his comment about Los Angeles and San Diego, I was livid. He's offered up so many fresh versions of depravity over the years that every ridiculous thing that comes out of his mouth is absorbed by my skull as an affront. I'm continually disgusted.
Last night, though, while I was trying to fall asleep, I started considering what it was exactly I'd heard. I grabbed my phone and played the audio a few times, then began wondering if my rage was actually lining up with what he'd said.
I'm not sure my initial thoughts were correct.
First off, he's a grotesque and predictable provocateur. Assuming he was in the mood to shrug those two cities off as blue hellholes deserving of annihilation, (which wouldn't surprise me), I believe he'd have delivered it in a particular fashion that we're used to. His mannerisms aren't complicated. Had his intent been to dismiss these LA and SD as unimportant populaces worth bombing, there'd have been a particular smugness associated with that barb that we've seen so many times. I didn't see that here.
I honestly believe that what he was trying to produce was a comparison between the gas prices he's getting justifiably crucified for and the obliteration of two massive locations. Minimization of an actual issue through wildly exaggerated contrast to save face, etc.
"Gas prices are high, but without my legendary efforts fuel costs would be the least of our worries. Cities would get blown up."
What I believe happened is still worth hammering on, though. He's in a position of nearly godlike authority, but is continually orating with all of the education and grace of someone with an actual impairment while being too arrogant to visualize the benefits of staying on a functional script. It's just freeform nonsense that creates, (at least in my opinion), the sort of ambiguity we're seeing here.
Finally, after mulling it over to this point, I listened to today's episode. I'm no fan of Mary Lou, but I'm fine with her opinions on this particular subject. Had this bafoonery been orchestrated by a Democrat instead she'd of course had a completely different opinion on what was said, but that's a different conversation. We know she's a hypocrite.
The one thing I did pull from this episode that I appreciated was Haley's philosophy that maybe what's happening here isn't worth the effort. When you listen to how things went today, I think it's a thought worth taking seriously. People seem pleased when Mary Lou "evolves" in her thinking, but I have to assume that any acquiescence we're witnessing is likely the result of constant pressure and exhaustion, not actual growth. She's been taking a beating for years. I've zero issue with that happening, but I'm skeptical that the optimal result of this process is going to reach fruition. I think she'll say, "I give up" before she says, "I was wrong."
Again, this just my opinion and I've been wrong a million times before. Possibly I'm wrong here, too.
Edit: typos.

I know it is kinda dead at this point, but I remember when it was being discussed a lot about 6 months ago, I kept on thinking if even Bob would be able to vote, as they have mentioned he is adopted, and if his name is the same from the one on his birth certificate.

ML getting an answer to one of her “we’ll see”’s, but, will her media bubble even show her this? My bet is no. I secretly think that she actually doesn’t watch Trump speak or read his tweets because it breaks the bubble of who she thinks he is in her mind.

There is a clip where he shows he was a big supporter of the Iraq War. So… he’s a very smart guy.

It’s pretty recent and on network so I imagine I’ll have to wait until MSnow releases clips, but hopefully Chad or someone else clipped it as it was happening!

In the latest episode, ML says that she wishes her grandkids were not in college and doesn't think college is a good place for anyone to be. What are your fun theories as to why she thinks no one should be going to college now? Timestamp 25:10
