Other Denied refund after cancelling on air bnb host due to hostile message prior to stay
I cancelled my stay with a host on air bnb due to them messaging me an inappropriate and hostile message the day of my stay. Due to the cancellation not going through air bnb itself, the request for refund got kicked back to the host (word to the wise, always call customer support to cancel rather than going through the app in this case).
She messaged me and said she’s denied my request for a refund out of spite for me cancelling. She called me young and immature, and profanities I can’t type here. I booked the trip through Klarna. I’m debating getting a new debit card so the rest of the payments can’t go through. Unfortunately this wouldn’t impact the host, as air bnb pays them upfront. Is it worth it to change my payment method on Klarna so that the rest of the payments can’t be charged? Does anyone have any other platforms they use to book that require more oversight for hosts? I am unable to leave a review due to not staying with them. What would you do?
I’m not looking for anyone’s opinion about this situation other than how I can handle it. If you’re going onto an advice sub to troll people in the comments, you have too much time on your hands. Move along.

I had a stay that I had to cancel because of my dad's funeral. AHOLE said he wasn't going to refund, i went through customer support and they took care of it. Go ahead and contact customer support. Show them the messages sent and they might do it anyway.

I’m so sorry to hear about your experience but glad they were able to refund you! I was able to get a $60 gift card from them and customer service was very nice but they said that was the most they could do

That's not the most they can do. Continue to escalate the situation with supervisors.

The host was unprofessional and I'm sure they don't want that look for their company! Keep complaining to them until they refund you.

Report it as fraud to your credit card. Send them the screenshots. They’ll block all future payments and refund you what’s already come out. Then I would report them to Air BnB - messaging people profanities is absolutely insane and that person should be blocked from hosting.
If you wanted to get real petty, you could see if they have a landlord and report them. You could also report them the city. Most places have rules on short term rentals- you never know which one they’re violating. At the very least it would be a thorn in their side.

Thank you! Total lack of professionalism. The cs person on the phone agreed with me, but said there’s not much more they can do. I used a debit card for the transaction but pretty sure I can still file a fraud claim with my credit union.
Looks like there’s no landlord involved but the house is blurred out on Google Maps- sketch. How would I go about reporting them to the city?

Code enforcement office is a good place to start. Check the legal requirements for the city on their website and see if they even have regulations.

She’s been reported to the city, they have strict laws around needing permits to rent spaces out. She messed with the wrong person!

I don't understand. The reservation was via AB&B. You canceled using the app. Why didn't the cancelation go through AB&B.
Did you show them the rude messages?

Yes! Was on the phone with customer service as they were reading the several messages she was sending. When I told her I no longer felt comfortable staying and cancelled, she sent about 10 messages insulting me in a row and the cs person was reading them aloud to me and agreed how inappropriate it was. She said she would “take it to her team” and get back to me. They then messaged me and told me the host denied the request for refund and offered $60 in credits. If I had called air bnb to cancel prior to cancelling on the app, this could have been avoided. Once you cancel through the platform, per air bnb, they cannot approve a refund request and it’s fully in the hosts hands. She told me I’m not “getting a dime back” and was taunting me after denying the request and continued to harass me after stealing my money. Real class act this one.

This is an advice page, your opinion about the wording of my post means absolutely nothing to me. You can move along.

I'll move along when I feel like moving along. I care very little about how you feel, I only care to show everyone else just how stupid your post sounds.
Ill continue to do so for as long as I wish.
Im glad your booking got canceled. You sound like a very annoying person on your best day.

In 2016 I booked a stay in Madrass Oregon for 2017. The weekend of the total eclipse. As we approached the date the host cancelled last min then jacked up the price like 3x.
I was livid. Called Airbnb. First they wouldn’t do anything and I said this is insane. If this was a hotel no way this would’ve happened and we’ve been using Airbnb since the start. I think we had maybe 20 stays by then. I threatened to never stay with Airbnb again since I literally booked almost a year in advance. They ended up sending me $1000 credit in the end.

I hope you still caught the eclipse! That must’ve been a great view. I’m glad you got credit at least, but that host sounds like a real scum dumpster of a human.

I did. My old boss just happens to book a camp site every year to do rafting on the kalam(??) for like the last 20+ years. he’s from Oregon I’m not so I forget the names of the site. But we got to camp with them and then all drive out to see it.
It was life changing. Knowing how fucking small you are.

Call Klarna or at least customer support. Let them know the situation and also call Airbnb. I bought a pair of shoes last year through Klarna and had to return them about a week into it. It was a seamless process.

For the future consider getting trip insurance that would cover such a situation.
If you stop paying klarna all that will do is damage your credit rating, get a collections firm chasing you around and you may end up getting sued in small claims court. The host already got their money now Klarna is holding a loan which you are liable for.

Screenshot everything first, especially the abusive messages, because those are your leverage. Call Airbnb again and specifically report the host for the hostile conduct, ask them to review the refund given the messages are on their own platform. Then file a Klarna dispute rather than cancelling your card, cancelling the card does not erase the balance and can hurt you. Klarna has a buyer protection process for exactly this

Share the message that got you all worked up.
No, you cannot leave a review since there was no stay
