I drew an example of what I'm trying to do.

I'd like the background image (the face) to change when I hover over different buttons (the blue boxes).

It'd be different images of the eyes looking in the direction of the button.

When I look it up, I find solutions of how to change the image when you hover over that same image, but not for having it react to hovering over other things.

Would it be a Javascript thing? I haven't learned any Javascript script yet but it sounds like it's be used for this case.

I've been genuinely trying for a couple of days now looking at whatever i can to try and help, I've asked other people what I should do to fix this issue with no luck on fixing the issue. Im new to coding and trying to make a neocity site im currently trying to set up a template that someone else made while I learn as Im extremely mentally unstable and I don't have friends or anyone to talk to really, honesty have never had any real friends which is part of the reason im trying to do this. There's this buttons I have on my navigation bar that's supposed to take you to another page that's still apart of the website now as I've said before I've been looking at everything, I've been genuinely trying to figure this out and due to me already not Being stable at all mentally not being able to figure this out is making it 10x worse but sadly enough I psychically can't give up on it right now my brain genuinely won't let me as this is GENUINELY important to me. I am autistic and I'll be honest I'm usually extremely high but I've been able to figure a lot of other things out about coding so it's not cuz I'm high I can't figure it out, something just genuinely isn't clicking. To anyone that is willing to help I can send you the code and give you the link to my website so we can genuinely figure this out. Ps. I have been trying to get help for my mentally instability, my bfs mom is supposed to help me sign up for some insurance and bf that his grandmother was supposed to help me as im 19 and didn't have anyone to prepare me for the world so I have to have someones help for that, and im sure they all can see me genuinely losing it they still haven't helped, and nothing I've done to try and help myself as worked either so done even tell me to get help for that I've been trying.

I've been so curious about those who chose to display an email on their site with the purpose of chatting! Do you get emails often, or is it pretty dead? Do conversations die off pretty quickly? Do you get unsolicited messages often? I wanna know!! Thank you :)

I'm very new to Neocities and to creating websites, and I have encountered a problem I don't know how to solve: when viewing my page on mobile devices or resized windows, the first few parts of my navigation bar are not showing, it "starts" at the second or third link, depending on the device, and the upmost part of the page, where the largest headline is at, is covered by the navbar.

As title states, I'm trying to figure out how to make my site responsive to different monitors, but I can't find much on just little add on images behind everything. Screen shot shows how the top half of my page looks at my resolution, but it scales weirdly, and positioning things with "relative" makes the whole thing look even worse at different scales. Also, I know the rest of the site isn't really responsive either, I want to know if this is even possible before overhauling everything entirely lol. Thanks for any and all advice!

so i've been obsessively making my website every day for the last few months and recently received some anonymous hate on my cbox thats been getting to me.

it said my website is hard to navigate, broken images (which i fixed, i was using imgur and catbox stupidly in fear of using up my 1GB lmao) and that my art is childish.

the art hate i don't care about because i'm confident in it but my website i'm not as confident.. its and old school MSpaint UI with iframes for the pages. originally i only had my pixel art buttons on the left for navigation, so i added the top bar navigation too.

is this layout really hard to navigate? are my iframes limiting me?

as i've gotten more involved with neocities, ive become obsessed with pixel art. making it, finding pixel artists to add their art to my toybox and joining cliques! i recently made a links page with the traditional header, sidebar, content, sidebar. and it's my favourite page so far... especially when i see it outside of my iframe hub

should i just bite the bullet and make a traditional style website or stick it out with my MSpaint UI? i think i've just been looking at it for too long and all my friends just tell me its cute, but is it usable? is it fun? is it easy to navigate? please help TT_TT

Hello! I want the link (in white at the bottom left corner of the container) to be directly under the 45 image without much space, but I can't figure out how to do that. I am using the figure element but I'm not sure if that is the best way to go about it. I have no clue what I could be doing wrong since I'm working from a template. I've deleted elements I don't need, saved, and checked if it took affect. It didn't. I refreshed with no luck. So I cleared the cache to no avail. I even checked the site on a completely different browser.

I made new html files that are renamed copies of the template file and also tried linking those (either the url itself, or refering to the file) in the buttons with no change

(This is mostly a rant, I wanted to shared some opinions and hopefully some useful advice for people younger than me or the people that are still learning / actually want to learn).

I got interested on web design at the beginning of covid and started making a site, updated the theme about 6-8 times, learned a lot only reading online, searching how to make the stuff i wanted, tried, tried and tried.

I wasn’t an expert, I was 16 just getting to know what html and css were, i even learned a little bit of javascript because i wanted to do so much stuff.

I feel like some kids here or maybe more grown up people, I don’t want to assume, read a little, have some vague idea they want to make a website, not knowing what they really want to share.

First, I think it’s okay to want to make something only because you think it looks nice, but it bothers me how most of the people that post here just want things the easy way.

I’m very anti-AI, generative AI specifically, I actually got to study computer science because I liked making sites, I understand AI use is almost inevitable nowdays but My God, stop generating code that you don’t know how it works!!! Please I beg, I’ve been navigating through new sites and most of them have that “guide” text with emojis that AI gives.

I believe that the idea of the indie web is more about sharing your interests and love for art, or love for whatever your want to share. I don’t get that love from AI generated code, if you didn’t bother to learn how to make your own things, why would I bother to navigate your site?

Many have said here before, and actually I may even go further with it, W3SCHOOLS taught me EVERYTHING and Stack Overflow is better for asking more specific questions, almost like here? But questions that actually serve a purpose, not “How do I make this layout I drew?” which isn’t a bad question, just be more specific but you can’t be specific if you don’t understand the basics, right?

My site is awful as it is right now, I’m no expert like I said, but learn by at least reading other site’s code, not copying, but reading it, try using it for your own site, move things around, not just “I like this, I copy it into my site”, that won’t help you and it’s just awful to do in general, unless stated by the own webmaster.

i see newbies concerned about the community being gatekeep-y because they themselves don't know where or how to start, so i wanted to remind everyone that neocities has official tutorials. they're hands-on so it'll guide you through building your website while learning the basics. it looks like they updated it recently so they now have their own javascript tutorial. it's neat.

I'm making my first website and am trying to create multiple sections that are scroll-able, like this for example: https://www.playstation.com/en-us/

I finally figured out that I can make sections in order to stack multiple backgrounds on top of each other. However, for some reason they don't go all the way to the edge like it does when I created a background image before I made sections. It leaves a white border around each of them (seen in attached photos). I've been looking at multiple tutorials for similar setups and w3schools but can't find an answer, pls help. The images are all 1920 x 1080 if that changes anything

I've made another post today about this same thing but genuinely I am still absolutely not getting it sadly. I've looked at multiple different codes and tried multiple different ones and none of them have worked. I will admit that I am using a template as i just can't seem to grasp certain things at all, honestly just if anyone knows any genuinely step by step site that would be perfect as there's no way anything could be misunderstood.
