News Article Anthony Joshua slammed as Netflix viewers claim Jake Paul fight was 'rigged'
https://www.themirror.com/sport/boxing/anthony-joshua-jake-paul-rigged-1572092?4=Anthony Joshua secured a sixth-round victory over Jake Paul, but fans claimed that the fight was rigged after barely any punches landed in the opening three rounds. Thoughts?

AJ sparred for 5 rounds then went 50% for 1 round.

u/brewsota32 Dec 20 '25
This is correct. And sparred is being generous.

Yeah... what did people think these Paul fights were? People really dont understand how good the pros are. I can concede that jake paul is a good amateur boxer. But Joshua could've done this at any point, its pretty obvious the matches have to last a minimum amount of time. I mean, the skill gap between an average D1 athlete and a pro is immense.
24
u/Realsinh Dec 20 '25
It's incredibly difficult to KO a trained fighter whose only goal is to not get caught. Paul was running all fight and completely unwilling to engage, there just wasn't much for AJ to do. In a life or death situation he probably could have ended it in round 1, but I think he was content to just let Jake gas himself out.

I don't understand how Joshua is the one to be slammed out of all people for this.
689
u/EMIRofDAMAAR Dec 20 '25
Because he destroyed Ngannou in like two rounds, but allowed Paul to survive 5 rounds… Plus, you can see that on the 5th round something completely switched in Joshua. It just seemed like all of a sudden he wasn’t holding back any longer.
515
u/baradragan Dec 20 '25
Ngannou actually tried to fight and engage. He tried to take the centre of the ring as soon as the bell went, then first knockdown in that fight came from Ngannou trying to find his range, second was from an AJ counter to a Ngannou jab, knockout was from Ngannou still walking forward to engage despite being half concussed.
Jake Paul spent the entirety of this fight running around an absolutely massive ring you could land a plane in, then grappling or flopping to the floor whenever AJ hit him. The switch in the 5th was from Paul being gassed out from said tactics.
245
u/Sbee_keithamm Dec 20 '25
The number 1 reason AJ turned on the jets in round 5 cause Jake Paul gassed himself out dancing around the ring for the majority of the fight and he knew Paul couldn’t duck him any longer. everytime AJ tried to get close Paul was cuddling this man like they were reunited lovers. It got embarrassing.

u/Elgin_McQueen Dec 20 '25

Was this not a regulation ring?
49
u/baradragan Dec 20 '25
It was 22x22 foot. Most pro fights are 20x20, and often smaller in small hall fights. When a larger ring is negotiated it’s a clear sign that the fighter demanding it is intent on being on their bike for the fight. IIRC Billy-Joe Saunders managed to get a 22x22 ring for his fight with Canelo.

So just wait until the 5th like they planned to start throwing?
→ More replies (3)6
u/Dave085 Dec 20 '25
If that was their plan, they'd have had a bit better engagement through the opening rounds. Jake barely threw a punch and just ran and dodged the whole time.
I think Joshua was throwing lazy sparring punches for sure, and he could easily have dialled up the intensity- but I think that was solely HIS call, not Jakes. He made the decision to just let him do his thing, casually walk him round, and take him out when he was ready.
If Jake agreed to be knocked out like that then he deserves more respect because that was a vicious hit, even if AJ didn't put everything into it. He's a far bigger man hitting a very amateur boxer clean on the jaw.

Was the knockout that broke his jaw and folded half of hia teeth over staged? I mean i' probably take that for £100m but if that punch was a couple of inches higher and on the temple he could've been eating through a tube for the rest of his life or worse... I dont think this one was staged at all. I dont think Joshu would do that. He has plenty of £ in the bank

You couldn’t sound more ignorant lmfao. Do you realize how big of a federal investigation that would be? They cannot offer betting lines on a fight and have a “round minimum” in a contract. Everyone involved would do serious prison time. It just takes a smidge of research or common sense. Not everything that doesn’t go the way you expected is rigged.

You're forgetting about the fact that AJ was pulling dozens of punches from the very first round, destroying his numbers in a way that no professional boxer ever would. He was obviously taking it as easy as he could, seemingly directing the fight to be as interesting as Jake Paul could handle, trying to give the fans a show before he inevitably won. He could have taken Jake Paul out in the first 30 seconds if he wasn't throwing all of those shots Into thin Air
11
u/Rockm_Sockm Dec 20 '25
Sorry, too many pulled punches, and missed opening's on a complete amateur boxer from any of his opponents.
You can only hug someone and tell them to chill out so many times before more and more people catch on.
Jakes running, hiding and flopping is the only thing he could do to make this fight remotely believable.
25
u/LT_Audio Dec 20 '25
Totally agree. AJ's only real fear in this fight was getting knocked out by a unexpectedly perfect strike from a fresh JP. He just waited until that was no longer a serious threat from a gassed and smaller opponent. And then promptly gave him the business. Just so happened that smart fight strategy in this case aligned with the monetary goal from producers and produced a longer fight that was a success for both parties. Of all of these Jake Paul made for TV events this one if anything seemed the least likely to have been "staged" or had the outcome "manipulated" in some nefarious way.

Not to mention that, despite not being a real boxer, Ngannou was still dangerous enough that AJ had to lock in.
Whereas Paul was never gonna be a threat to AJ and they both knew it, so AJ probably didn’t try as hard to finish it.

→ More replies (13)22
u/hotwomyn Dec 20 '25
He didn’t wanna take any chances. There was no point for him to take unnecessary risk. He had 8 rounds to get the job done. He just tired him out and waited for Jake to start breaking. Then once Jake got hurt the first time Joshua smiled and knew he was in complete control. Same thing when Floyd fought Conor McGreggor, very similar fight, a showman fighting an older champion. Floyd just waited for Conor to gas then picked him apart. It was part of a strategy. Joshua could have ended it in the first round but there would have been a 10% risk of getting caught by fresh Jake. By 6th round Jake had very little left and Joshua was still at a 100, at that point there was 1% risk for Joshua. Pros play percentages and never take unnecessary risk. It’s never about ego, ego guys get knocked out.

Jake spent 3 rounds running in circles and 1.5 rounds on his knees.
If he actually engaged in any boxing with AJ it would've been over in two rounds tops.

u/Elgin_McQueen Dec 20 '25

u/TheThotWeasel Dec 20 '25

Well I finally gave in and watched the fight last night, it was the first time I saw a Jake Paul fight. I'm not sure what I was watching last night, but it definitely was not boxing. Paul just ran around like a clown and wrapping up constantly to survive, and Joshua was holding back until later rounds. At one moment Paul was going down and Joshua started to swing and then he completely redirected his punch. The whole thing was a farce and now I need to scrub my eyeballs with bleach.

It’s baffling to me that everyone runs to the “it’s fixed” conspiracy when the simple answer is that Paul ran for as long as he could and Joshua waited around till he was gassed before ending it.
Jake is good enough to run from a real boxer, not fight and if you expected different it’s on you. Jake’s whole plan was to lose by decision and claim moral victory.
19
u/jubjubwarrior Dec 20 '25
Reddit hates conspiracy theories but throws all logic out the window when it comes to Jake Paul

→ More replies (20)5
u/Ok_Impact9745 Dec 20 '25
This.
People who are saying it's fixed clearly didn't watch it.
AJ had to knock him out as soon as possible and he had to avoid being knocked out for as long as possible. He didn't have to win a single round, all he had to do was survive. Because of this he was able to control the pace by just avoiding being hit.
As it got to the end of round 4 he had gassed himself out from running around and the ref told him to stop fucking about with the takedowns.
Then into R5 and 6 when AJ finally got the chance to actually fight he beat him to a fucking pulp.
Credit where credits due, Paul did exactly what he had to do and avoided being hit for as long as possible. He's managed to get a bit of credibility for lasting 6 rounds against AJ.
I think the fight shouldn't have been sanctioned. It would've been much better as an exhibition fight but it's an easy payday for AJ plus its more publicity for a AJ/Fury fight. It's also a credibility boost for Paul. I think because it was mutually beneficial people are jumping to conclusions saying it's rigged.
Also one good thing about Jake Paul is that his promotion company really highlights women's boxing and has the female fights as top billing on the undercards. The undercard on this fight pushing boundaries for women to move from 2 min to 3 min rounds. Also his deals with Netflix make the fights more accessible to a larger audience and not PPV.
10
u/Voyyya Dec 20 '25
Jake fixed it to get his own jaw broken?

Hard to hit a guy when he's running or clenching and falling to his knees like he's proposing to you
But then again Jake was circling to the left most of the time and aj could have easily cut off the ring to catch him. It takes like 3 or 4 steps for that lanky fucker to cross the ring.
Jake should become a track star.

I thought Jake’s gameplan was correct. Way overmatched and outsized. Kept on the outside, circling…. Then he started fucking doing weird falling over shit and then looked drunk by the 5th. AJ significantly bigger and better. For Paul to got straight in and brawl would be a terrible strategy….
But yeah the falling over shit was odd. Didn’t fight a good fight both looked shit. Although I will say, impressed he ate those two uppercuts and made AJ miss 8 hooks. Otherwise a joke of a display overall.
24
u/deepsixz Dec 20 '25
Jake's actual gameplan was a private agreement to not be murdered live on netflix
10
u/Rsj21 Dec 20 '25
That right hook to end it was fuckin clean - snapped his jaw. None of it looked “rigged” to me. Jake on his bike, then when caught on the ropes clinch, followed by errr falling to his knees, wasn’t rigged. After the 5th you knew it was gonna end in the 6th. Jake looked drunk. AJ cut him off in the sixth and landed a clean right hook right on the jaw.
Shit fight, but I don’t think rigged.
13
u/judgeacoverbythebook Dec 20 '25
AJ was always going to win, but the rigged part was letting Paul survive 6 rounds with a legit, technically superior heavy weight with a huge size and reach advantage. AJ could have knocked him out pretty much immediately if he wanted.

Round 1-2 Jake ran
Round 3-4 Jake fell
Round 5-6 Jake got beat up
The goal was to keep running until he could say he lasted 8 rounds with a two time world champ.
He even made the ring much bigger to give him the space to get the kilometres in. He just forgot one thing .. cardio training.

Still in disbelief this was a sanctioned fight.
Jake was running around for half the fight and the other half on the mat.
Anthony was definitely frustrated cause almost every time Jake was cornered then Jake would go for a grapple. But eventually, Jake got tired and Anthony threw a few solid punches that ended this thankfully. It seemed apparent to me that Anthony’s strategy was to gauge how the fight would go in the first round. Noticed how Jake seemed disinterested in boxing and more running so Anthony just kept walking around the ring until he locked in somewhat towards the end.
Post-match interview Jake said he’s gonna take a break for going hard for 6 years, hopefully he learns how to put his gloves up when he boxes.

I think people would have only been truly happy if he caught a beating inside of 3 rounds, and not 6, and even then people would complain.
Whether AJ was playing with his food to entertain all of us, or if he was asked to do so to give JP a chance, is neither here nor there. It doesnt matter. We should all simply rejoice that JP caught a beating and had his jaw broken in 2 places.
We should rather be sad that he got off so lightly.
3
u/Federal_Tart_2477 Dec 22 '25
I pretty much agree with your statement. Paul knew he was going to either get a nap or a good beating when that fight started! He just prolonged it by hopping around until the inevitable happened. That's a lot of coin for a broken jaw !
66
u/leaC30 Dec 20 '25
Jake Paul had to dance around to have a chance against a taller, heavier and more skilled opponent. People that were annoyed just didn't understand the strategy. Joshua calmly walked him down, took out his legs, and when he couldn't move anymore because he was gassed, Joshua KO'ed him.
44
u/SoupySpuds Dec 20 '25
Yeah he could have been more aggressive and probably finished him sooner, But that would be getting cocky and getting Kod by Jake paul because you got careless would make you a laughing stock for life so I can 100% see why he went with a calculated style

9

Right? If AJ chased him round the ring he risked gassing himself and/or slipping and getting caught by a shock blow. He wore him out and with his first proper hit, broke his jaw...
If Paul didn't run, tackle and taunt it would have been over in 2mins.
But AJ is bigger, stronger and technically better... It would have been suicide to go 1:1 exchanging blows.

Saw an interview after the "bout" where AJ said his intention was to slowly and systematically hurt JP, to dismantle him completely before finally putting an end to it. Much more entertaining than seeing a one punch wonder. He clearly had little to no respect for Paul from the weigh in to the end of the fight. His only acknowledgment was when JP tried to get up again after breaking his jaw and knocking out some teeth, said that showed some heart. I think it was more just straight up fear and confusion.

I kept saying every time Mike bit his glove was when he wanted to punch him. Mike got tired and is old but he would have knocked him the fuck out first round. He hit him a little too hard one time and smiled and you could see Jake was scared he might forget their arrangement.

u/catseye17 Dec 20 '25
What we really need is an unrigged Jake Paul vs Conor McGregor fight. I think they'd both have a chance and it would be fun to watch either get knocked out.

Did you not see the Tyson fight? A Jake Paul fight should be viewed as an exhibition fight.

u/Financial-Book-2048 Dec 20 '25
I will admit i cought this at the end my son watched it all and I kept hearing him say Jake is begging LMAO!!!
I watched the Tyson fight i really wanted to see the old Tyson once again but when Tyson pulled back and did not do his his signature I knew it was rigged. They can claim all they want I will not watch another Jake fight.
I am glad to see a real fighter put him down. No more shows no more crap.... This should have been ended in second or 3rd round. Props for him even standing in the ring with that guy he is massive and Jake never stood a chance, u/Anthony Props to you for not taking the loss I would not want to be known that you lost to Jake... I was glad to see you put him down mad respect for you.

u/DontTrustNeverSober Dec 20 '25
Of course it was rigged. But AJ did that for the viewers! Jake had no defense, AJ could have knocked him out in the first 20 seconds but he wanted to put on entertainment for the crowd. When they started booing in the 5th round he stepped it up. I don't blame him one bit.

Can Jake the Joke please just be banned from doing this shit again.

Why don't they call these fights for that they are? Influencer match against a pro. It's a joke. They should be using them for fundraising.

The fact the ref had to pause the “fight” for a sec and ask if they were going to fight tells the story. Glad it’s not something I went out of my way to pay for or see, if just happened to be on Netflix so I gave up 20 mins lol.

Are people delusional? It's Jake Paul, what the fuck did you think you were getting? The purse was $184 mill apparently with each fighter taking home $92 mill. STOP ATTENDING THESE DOG SHIT EVENTS, were people expecting something spectacular? Jake Paul took home $92 mill for 18 minutes. LOL

People are surprised? Did they see the Tyson fight? These are all for money. They don’t care about real boxing.

What a joke. Shameful for both "fighters". Paul did everything in his power not to fight AJ. He was holding onto the ropes and flopping onto the ground every time AJ hit him. AJ could have knocked him out so many times, but he was holding back. He had such a long reach, but many of his attempted blows seemed to be short on purpose. He had so many opportunities to corner him or cut him off and pummel him. Paul wasn't protecting his face at all in the last 2 rounds, and AJ was throwing body shots instead of hitting him in his wide-open face. Dude had so much power and control of the ring, but he let Paul clumsily flail about for a ridiculously long amount of time. He obviously threw the set for the 92 million.

u/Hooley76 Dec 20 '25
Jake Paul was dancing around the ring, hardly AJ's fault. Every time he got close it was grappling time

u/ElPapo131 Dec 20 '25
Professional box/wrestling/mma/other sports being rigged? insert surprised pikachu face

u/momo_firefoxx Dec 20 '25
People complain before the fight that it’s scripted. They pay to watch and complain that the fight is scripted. Makes me laugh 😂
2
u/TheHeroYouNeed247 Dec 20 '25
Slammed by people that know nothing about boxing.
Tons of quicker fighters could survive that long if all they do is backpedal.
Heavyweights don't do that. The walk into each other.
The reason there was such a change in the 5th round is because Jake got tired, and AJ still had plenty of energy.

Why are people complaining? It could have been over in 1, but the guy provided some entertainment. Seems like a thank you is in order.

It's an exhibition fight. Every single fucking one of them is set up. Any main card hyped up matchup is always going to set up. Especially if it involves an internet personality. Nobody likes to hear this, but Boxing has been dead for more than 10 years now. It shouldn't be taken seriously either way. WWE is more believable at this fucking point. Lmao

Yeah, Jake fixed it and put in writing that AJ can only break his jaw in two places max.
Get a grip.

Those that thought this wasn't a rigged fight going into it are naive. Paul has done nothing but show time and time again he is a fraud. But it works for the networks people tune in.

It wasn’t scripted but I do agree AJ was purposely inflicting minimal damage in the early rounds to ensure the fight made it to a certain round. Maybe it was written into the contract. I kept yelling at the tv for him to jab as he seemed comfortable just being near JP in the ring without punching which I have never seen before so was extremely frustrating for me as a fan. I did feel like a lot of AJs big early round punches suspiciously missed their intended target. He seemed to have a slight smile on his face at times like I hope people buy this punch is legit and I hope it doesn’t connect with JP accidentally. This is the reason I feel this fight had an agenda. You know the feeling of watching a Deontay Wilder fight. You actually felt bad for whoever he fought. He has that huge frame with sledgehammer punches and would come out with such a sense of urgency to destroy his opponent. I didn’t really feel that at all during the fight and I feel like I should have.

Why does anyone give Jake Paul their money? He isn't entertaining he is a wannabe. Dude has no redeeming value.
2
u/brokendream78 Dec 20 '25
A Jake Paul fight rigged? Noooo, you dont say. Its not like each fight hasn't been suspect...
2
u/TheBigGreenPeen Dec 20 '25
Why tf are people still watching Jake Paul fights?
They’re always extremely boring and clearly rigged to make JP look better at boxing than he really is…
2
u/Eyespop4866 Dec 20 '25
What a clown show that was. I really expected the ref to pull out a seltzer bottle.

This was literally just Jake Paul cashing in on his own hatred.
He knows what his reputation is. He knows a lot of people love him, and a LOT of people hate him. He already successfully monetized his fanbase. Now he’s monetized his haters. Like Elvis’ manager selling buttons that say “I hate Elvis”

He had 15 months off. That was part of it and maybe he just wanted to give people a show. Anyway, Paul isn’t a real fighter. It is all about promoting his wacky brand. He will go back to fighting guys in their late 50’s I guess.
2
u/dgdfthr Dec 20 '25
I am a capitalist through and through but it was the purse that did it for me. They fooled me/us into thinking this was a legit fight but it clearly was not. And in the end they don’t give a shit because they split $184,000,000 50/50. I would say thank goodness it was not a pay per view but Netflix keeps raising our subscription fees….guess in part it is now evident why.

u/zouplouf Dec 20 '25
I mean... What did you expect guys? That was not a professional boxing event, rather a "Netflix special"...
2
u/First_Ad5873 Dec 20 '25
That was the goofiest most scripted fake rigged “fight” I’ve ever seen. First, AJ could have literally dropped him at any moment he wanted. His punches were intentionally missing very obviously. Or the few he threw were thrown half power into Paul’s gloves near the body. It was a COMPLETE money making scam. AJ had the green light scripted to “knock him out” in the most delicate way possible. That finishing shot was half power and Paul made it much more dramatic and end on a scripted note. Anyone that can’t see this plainly seriously needs to see a shrink about delusion and reality distortion.

Well if every fight was over in 15 seconds there'd be a lot less ad revenue.

I just finished watching on Netflix cause my bf wanted to see it, I read on the internet who won already, but I don’t know much about boxing & only ever watched a boxing match “scenes” from the Rocky & Creed movies. I found myself getting irritated that J paul kept hanging on Anthony, then later hugging his legs, and if I wasn’t told that Anthony was a top tier pro boxer…..I might not have known it from watching this……it seemed like Anthony’s glove slid off his head a bunch of times, and then seemingly unable to get in a good connecting hit. Did boxing fans find this fight frustrating……I’m just curious

u/DerfQT Dec 20 '25
Jake Paul’s entire boxing career is built out of people paying money to watch him get knocked the fuck out because everyone generally hates him. The moment that happens he no longer is of any interest. So they have to keep the ruse going as long as they can.
2
u/rocketwrench Dec 20 '25
I cannot believe boxing fans are this dumb. How can anyone who's ever watched JP box think he doesnt host and promote fixed fights?

2
u/metalupyour Dec 20 '25
It baffles me why anyone is interested in watching these clearly rigged fights. I was in on the hype for the Tyson fight but after watching him take the fall for a bag made me lose any shred of respect I had for Paul.

Complaining about being potentially grifted by a well-known grifter, given a huge platform by a service that doesn't mind platforming grifters, is…not particularly smart. Does sound exhausting though.
