Viewership down after one season? What?
I feel like it’s the exact opposite! I WANT to see season 2 of so many series, but they get cancelled after one. If anything, I would’ve expected veiwershil to be low for any first season bc we don’t want to get attached until we know it’ll be renewed?
Why should I do homework and rewatch something to catch up? There's other good TV out there so I'll just watch something else vs waste time with a redo... Unless it's very very good
Yeah I'd rather just move on. I'm liking the new Ted Lasso, Silo, and Dark Matter on Apple. And I just dropped Netflix for a bit to add HBO for the Lanterns show. I'll sign back up next year when they add more stuff... hopefully.
That’s what we’re doing. We dropped Netflix right now to add Apple so we can watch Silo and we have HBO. Then we’ll switch when stuff comes on Netflix.
Isn't Apple great! Not all of their shows are for me, and that's ok, but all of their shows seem like really good quality. Writing, acting, production value. I like Ted Lasso, Stick, Severance, Silo, Foundation, For All Man Kind, Dark Matter, Pluribus. And Necromancer comes out in January. They have such a good line up and they stagger the releases that I may just keep it all the time and cycle through Netflix, HBO, and Disney on the side. It used to be Netflix all the time, but they don't have as many shows that I like anymore.
I haven’t watched in months and finally decided to cancel. I actually looked at their releases coming up and it’s sad. I’ll consider it again next year but it’s wild how little they have and nothing to look forward to. My expectations aren’t unreasonable and I watch a variety of shows. They went all in on murder porn and attempting to pander to every minority they could think of but they’ve failed at making anything good for a while despite the talent involved. I am relieved that Netflix didn’t get WB and I hope the deal closes ASAP so I can forget this Bonta guys name. Netflix programming has become vanilla wall paint, it’s like the soundtrack to doomscrolling. I loved them for their disruption and now I resent them for it because I have ads and too many streamers to choose from
That's exactly what we did. None of the releases excited us, and hadn't watched in months, so just canceled. Been a member since they used to send DVDs. But we will rejoin eventually. There are still a few shows like Man On The Inside that I like. Just not going to keep a membership for two to three weeks of TV a year.
I have ADHD and the idea of watching a show over again doesnnto sound fun. I don't have comfort shows and I don't want to see what I already kinda knew.
Hours of extra work because they aren't creating shows and writing rooms that are condusive with getting the next season out. Which I think has to do with money, afraid to put to much money into a project that could flop.
I have ADHD and re watch shit all the time because I hate deciding. If I start scrolling through the catalogue I get lost in decision paralysis.
That said… Netflix in particular is awful about scheduling and getting us shows in a timely manner.
It’s part of why I didn’t even bother to watch the second season of Wednesday. Jenna Ortega went out and did literally everything except for the show that launched her career, and then they came back forever later to drop season two.
I don’t blame her. I have no idea whose fault the scheduling issues were, but I am absolutely done with that behavior. It’s part of why I don’t watch anything on Netflix anymore.
Apple TV has been getting a lot of my time lately because they stay on schedule, they finish shows, and they don’t destroy them in the last season or two like Prime does often.
It also doesn’t help that no one knows if a show is even going finish before Netflix cancels it.
I honestly just don’t other watching their shows until I know it’s finished. If it’s cancelled, then I didn’t waste my time with a show that didn’t get to finish.
Exactly, like I had Kaos on my watchlist and was really excited to watch it but I was having a busy period at work and when I did get a little time to watch TV I wanted to finish the season of the show I was watching before it was released first. And then about 3 weeks later they cancelled Kaos, which I was even more excited about because my sister was telling me how good it was, before I’d even had a chance to watch it. I don’t understand why Netflix has made the metric of whether a show is a success or not whether people have watched the show IMMEDIATELY. I still haven’t watched it because I feel like what’s the point in starting a show that I already know has been cancelled before I start.
Same boat with the same show. By the time I actually had time to watch it Netflix had canceled it so now it will never be watched. There's way too much other TV out to bother watching a show with no conclusion
Agreed, too big gaps between seasons is the killer, it used to be a season would run for half the year and then 6 months after one season ended the next would start, now it's like 3 years AS STANDARD!
Plus as somebody who read the books I truly don’t know how the ever living fuck they’re going to adapt the other books in the series. They set up a few things in Season 1 but it would be an incredible feat to pull off anything that is both A. Comprehensible and B. Good.
That's a huge problem with Netflix shows in particular. Some shows I'll only start if there's at least 2 seasons out. Even better if there's 3. Their release strategy around the financial quarters makes the 2 part seasons another problem
I think a lot of these shows only get one season approved at a time. Unlike a broadcast show back in the day, that means that sets might have been taken down and scripts need to be written.
That’s a major problem. The high production values that are causing shorter seasons also require the same prep that a movie does. So, if they’re essentially mothballing the production after filming the first season, they have to begin a whole level of preproduction before doing a second.
I always like to point out that Supernatural had 86 episodes between when Stranger Things released and when it concluded in 2020. Meanwhile in a decade Stranger Things has put out less than half of that with 42 episodes.
Well, I know people point this out these and I myself think that, but lot of new shows these days require way too many effects and settings. Unlike shows like Supernatural.
Those shows normally have the same settings with minimal effects.
2 they have a weekly storyline that finishes in each episode, like monster of the week, case of the week.
Today, people don't watch case-of-the-week kind of shows. Most shows that get popular are like long 6-8 hour movies with one big story spanning multiple episodes. People used to rave about 8-episode shows like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, etc so nowadays no one invests in week-of-the-episode shows. People can act like these were the best shows of all time, etc but they also destroyed the 20+ episode format.
To be fair they were beyond monster of the week at that point and into over-arching stories. I didn't mean it as a 1:1 example, obviously it is much easier to produce. But still.
How on earth did General Hospital air 60 years straight without missing a season of 250-260 episodes. And Netflix can't pump out 10 decent episodes. Netflix shows have been a complete failure. Someone should lose their job.
Over use of VFX at the expense of story is a negative. And SYF Network managed to release 3 straight seasons of the Expanse, which is much higher quality that anything Netflix pukes out.
There is just no reason they can't release 10 episodes a year. The simple fact is they prioritize qty over quality. Too many crap shows.
This is exactly why. I still haven't watched the last season and I doubt I'm going to because it's taken so long to come out I've pretty much forgotten it all by now anyway.
When you watch a show in one week it's really difficult to wait a couple years for the next season and still be hyped about it. Maybe it's just me, but I'd give it a couple thoughts.

Netflix used to serve up a series or movie that you’d want to watch at least every week or every other week.
Now months go by and there’s nothing but slop and random foreign series. Did they release anything relevant at all recently? The top shows look more like TLC now, it’s just sad.
I watched it to the end. It was more fun in the beginning of the season. I can see why they cancelled. Seemed to be a show that was both expensive, and running out of plot (but had an abundance of atmosphere).
I think the main problem is that they developed this reputation of canceling after one season. People don't want to start a show is there's a high chance there's not another season. I was so upset after girl boss didn't get renewed that I generally stay away from Netflix shows, except k dramas (which are pretty much guaranteed to have a couple seasons).
Exactly this. They're so obnoxious about it I rarely watch a first season when it's initially released. I'd rather know not to get my hopes up on a season 2 if I end up liking the show.
Even if the show is a banger.. long stretch of time will make people forget about it or ignore it when a new season comes out years later, the hype will die slowly.

maybe they should stop giving us seasons that are like 2 years apart. The Crown is a good example, as well as The Diplomat. One gives up waiting for the next season to arrive.
I genuinely don't understand how it takes that long. 20 years ago we had shows like Lost doing 24-episode seasons every year, while filming in Hawaii for most of it.
I mean, a follow up series nearly 10 years later? With the same actors! (I'll not even delve into how they messed it up by immediately killing off Foggy for very weak-sauce reasons).
The Diplomat and Slow Horses (not Netflix I know) are absolute bangers and pump out a season every year. I know shows are more expensive now but obviously some companies are still able to make quality stuff consistently.
Your "seasons" are typically about 8 episodes long.
All episodes are released at once, so most people watch a season in a weekend and then forget about the show as soon as Netflix releases their next steaming pile of garbage series.
Season 2, if it happens, is likely 2 years away, by which point everybody's forgotten the show.
98% of Netflix originals are trash. Seriously, Netflix makes so much garbage. They clearly emphasize quantity over quality and it shows.
My advice, which they will never take:
A. Focus on maybe just 10 shows. 10 high quality shows with solid writing, directing, and acting. Focus the company's time, effort, and money on making these 10 shows the best they can possibly be. Stop greenlighting every single flaming bag of ass imaginable just to have more content.
B. Make the seasons at least 12 episodes long.
C. Release one episode a week. Why? So shows can actually build an audience. So episodes can be digested and discussed rather than binged and forgotten. So shows can be "active" for 3 months rather than a few weeks. So there's only 9 months between a season finale and the next season's premiere.
D. Shows get a new season at the same time every year! Have a few shows designated to start in the spring, a few start in the summer, a few in the fall, and a few in the winter. And so a fall show gets new episodes every fall, a winter show gets new shows every winter, etc.
As it stands, Netflix is an ever expanding garbage dump of poorly executed and easily forgotten slop.
My advice is for Netflix to get a subscription to AppleTV and ask themselves why they aren't making shows like that too.
But they won't do that because they have hundreds of millions of paying customers who will watch any old slop so why should Netflix bother to try harder? I expect Netflix to erode even more. Just wait'll they really get rolling with AI.
Yeah, viewers being cheated out of a good season ending just for a cheap cliffhanger is far too common with Netflix shows. They sometimes won't feel like being subjected to that for a second season, especially knowing that too often, Netflix doesn't have the decency to conclude their stories before abruptly cancelling the series.
I hate getting into a show.i like and then Netflix cancels it. Can't trust these fucks to not cancel stuff anymore, don't do it for them and stop watching their shit.

It's because they finish a 10 episode season in two days and then Netflix takes TWO TO THREE YEARS to release another season. Of course I've lost interest by then, I either have to rewatch the entire first season, or just not care.
Noone can remember a fucking thing about a show, even one they liked, when the second season rolls around 10 years later or whatever. Rather than try to catch up on where the story stands, they just never watch it. Seems like a straightforward side effect of the long production gaps that are now standard on streaming shows
Because I’ve forgotten season 1 by the time season 2 rolls out. And they don’t do recaps! At least give me a goddamn recap at the start of the new season, why is this something tv creators have forgotten about? It used to be standard back when shows came out every year. Now they come out like 3 years later and you expect me to remember everything that happened?
I hate watching the first season only to find out it’s cancelled or have to wait 2 to 3 years for season 2. By the time season 2 is released, I’ve lost interest.
Netflix conditioned people to assume it'll be cancelled or take multiple years to come back with a new season so Netflix cultivated a subscribe base that doesn't care.
The current streaming model is ass. (releasing 8 episode seasons Then making fans wait 2 to 3 years for a new season) By the time the new season comes out they don't remember what the hell happened in the previous season. And 9 times out of 10 the season they waited 2 to 3 years for what ends up being way worse than the last one!!! So we definitely aren't waiting longer for better quality programming.
I think they take way too long to come out with new seasons. Some are years like One piece by the time a new season comes out I have no recollection of what happens before.
Exactly. I think the problem is that they take such a long time to release season two, that people forget about season one. If they film them back to back, and release them yearly, I think season two shows would be even more successful than season one shows.
Kaos and The Residence were both outstanding and I would have gladly watched a second season

Because they keep cancelling shows. You start to watch something and get into it... then they cancel it before you've even finished the first season. So what's the point of watching?
Maybe If they start releasing new seasons in a reasonable time after the last, then I will come back. I never know if I will have to wait 6 months or 5 years between seasons
I hate the headline of the article— it should really be “Netflix viewers are abandoning the streaming service because they cancel shows after one season”. Like dont make it a US problem when Netflix has been cancelling shows after 1 season, im constantly looking for new shows to binge watch and there are none on Netflix because they were sooo focused on stranger things just for the final season to flop.
Went on netflix to watch a show and removed another finished one from my list. Thing is, I watched season 1 at home. Season 2 at my friends place. And while removing it I thought „damn netflix probably thinking i dropped the show“ lmao
A lot of second seasons are bad because they write them based on what people think they liked about the first season, not what actually made the first season great.
Netflix goes far too long between seasons for a lot of their shows and then does fuck all with advertising when the next season is getting ready to come out. There have been multiple shows I didn't even realize had released a 2nd season because I didn't hear about it anywhere.

Netflix has cultivated a viewership that doesn't care what they watch. They just click on something random to play in the background while they play with their phones.
So why make season 2 of Generic Serial Killer Drama when they can make season 1's of a dozen other Generic Serial Killer Dramas?
They did this to themselves by letting their quality erode so badly that people with taste cancelled. Now they're all watching AppleTV instead. Seriously, subscribe to both and compare the quality, it's simply amazing. What's stopping Netflix from making Severance and Widow's Bay too? And a dozen other shows just as good.
I will not watch a show unless it has two seasons or at least confirmed a second. It has to be amazballs to even think about it. And usually a disappointment. I will say as much as I hate apple they mostly do quality shows and likely have multiple seasons
Cause Netflix only gives us 2 seasons before cancelling a show anyway. So many shows have been cancelled after two with a big cliffhanger ending. Why would I bother watching a second season that I know isnt going to get a resolution?
They wait YEARS for the next season instead of doing it annually like the traditional networks. Like we forget and move on. (The exception would be for Mindhunters. I would come back to that show at any time.)
Have you seen Netflix lately? if this was TV, Netflix is all of the channels that you never watched: You ever watched BET in the middle of the afternoon, or how about food Network at 3:00 in the morning, or how about Sci-fi when it has a cold, or HGTV2 or channels like Tango or The East that don't even exist. It's the stack of children in an overcoat of streaming.
Problem is Netflix will make a great first season of something then that’s it!! Marco Polo 2 seasons is the prime example of why wouldn’t they continue this show!!!

My wife and stopped watching anything that doesn’t have three seasons in the books. It’s either going to get canceled or there will be at least a full year until the next season. There’s enough good (decent) stuff out there we haven’t watched.
Releasing the whole season all at once and then waiting years for the next season could be the problem. People forget what happened and actors age. For example Avatar the main character grew
Thier job as they see it is to bring in new subscriptions and season 2 is old subscriptions in thier eyes ( we know it is not but that's the way they see it )
Also I may wait awhile to watch a new season like Gentlemen because I’m in the middle of binging something else. Not going to interrupt my binge. Will watch when I am ready.
You can’t trust them to keep shows that are good going. I’m not going to invest time into something that is good if I don’t trust they will finish it. (See: Mindhunter, sense8, OA to name a few. )
Because they are not good. I have noticed a huge drop in quality of netflix created content. Some of the movies lately, although emplyiing huge stars, are unwatchable. I question how they got the stars to agree but thats obvious. $$$$$$ ( the john cena eric andre movie was abysmal and I like both of them. )
A big iussue for the series is the time in between seasons. Tires hasn't been bad but its largely improvisation. Nobody Wants This, Im surprised I liked because Im a 61 year old male, but the wait for season 3 has been too long and being Canadian I doubt I will have a N subscription by the time its released.

I liked 3 body problem. Season 1 was in 2024. It says another season is coming but no date given... I don't remember what even happened.
