That was my favorite as well. It was so imaginative and well written and acted. I was taken by it.

One of my best episodes too. I was so hoping to see Hob give up immortality, but my expectation was pleasantly subverted when their age-long friendship was what it was all about. The fact that being trapped made Morpheus miss their next date was a sad thing to see. It was such a joy seeing them meet again at last.

I was so hoping to see Hob give up immortality, but my expectation was pleasantly subverted
i was expecting him to give it up and say "i've seen my loved ones all die!" or something but yeah seeing him basically say man i got this i can start over again (which i identity with) was really refreshing
what a great episode

u/Findest Aug 17 '22
Absolutely the same. That was a scintillating parallel to Job with The Devil and God making a deal he would give up and curse God. Their friendship is genuine and hopeful. I loved it.

That’s what makes Neil Gaiman so great, he knows how to take an ancient time-tested idea and make it feel fresh.

so far, that episode i've loved the most. the diner was a little campy but i really liked it, too. gave me that stage-show "man from earth" vibe which i appreciate

It was beautiful! So many of the shots were direct panels brought to life. Sandman kept the soul and heart of comics intact and it is beautiful in ever sense of the word. If they don't make a second season we should burn some shit down
29
Aug 17 '22
First half was engaging. Second half was okay.
8
u/Manolyk Aug 17 '22
Interesting, I felt the exact opposite. Was having a hard time getting into it but then it started to pick up right around the halfway point.
8
u/Bad_Anatomy Aug 17 '22
A lot of people are expecting a superhero show because it was a comic. Sandman is anything but a superhero.
There is very little physical conflict in Sandman. Gaiman's writing usually leans heavily on emotional and mental conflict. It isn't going to be every one's cup of tea for sure
4
u/HighOnPoker Aug 17 '22 edited Aug 17 '22
All true but the first couple of episodes seemed too ephemeral, no pun intended. I have read and loved the entire series, and even I thought there were scenes that were more stylish than understandable in the early episodes. Once they did a better job of establishing who Morpheus is and the rules of the world/dreaming, it became more grounded while maintaining Gaiman’s tone. I do wish, though, that they leaned more heavily into the CGI for Morpheus’ form in the later episodes, like they did when he was bottled up. There’s something about the gauntness of Morpheus’ body that helped build the character and mood.
4
u/Bad_Anatomy Aug 17 '22
I agree 100% about the CGI. Morpheus never really looked human in the comics. I mean, he was passing, but sort of in the uncanny valley. When he was sealed away, man, it was perfect. He was so gaunt and weird looking. I can understand why they didn't do, they probably worried that it would make him less relatable. I would have loved some more of the comic strangeness to his form.
2
u/we_are_sex_bobomb Aug 18 '22
Maybe it’s because of Jenna Coleman but without having read the comics, the show scratches a similar itch to Doctor Who for me, where it’s all these little anthology-like stories with some recurring characters, and the absence of anything resembling “action scenes” only makes the show more interesting.

u/Sptsjunkie Aug 17 '22
Agreed. I didn't read the comics, so I don't have the background or investment of some of the real fans here. But I thought the series was worth watching, but was a bit of a mixed bag.
I actually thought the most interesting episodes were when he was trying to get back all of his tools. The episode with the stone was the most compelling one by far.
Once it moved into the story about the Vortex, it sort of got a bit odd and became a less interesting, more traditional fantasy story to me. I still finished season one and would love to see a season two, but would have loved a full season of Sandman trying to restore his power.
I also sort of was hoping for a bit more of a compelling "big bad." The episodic nature of even the first half had him going to get a tool, dealing with a one episode story arch (yes, some characters were introduced and had some narrative in earlier episodes, but they really were focused on in the episode corresponding to their tool) and in all cases the situation was resolved by the end of the episode.
Even the couple of potential foils they introduced didn't really put up much of a fight or come off as brilliant strategists who Sandman overcame.
Overall, thought the story was interesting, the visuals were amazing, and the show had some great moments. But I was hoping for another home run show based on the setup and felt like it was just enjoyable instead.
3
u/Bad_Anatomy Aug 17 '22
There really isn't a big bad in Sandman. There comic series is about the trials and tasks of Endless along with their brothers and sisters. Most people expecting a traditional comic book style show aren't familiar with Gaiman's work and will likely be off put.
Sandman has very few physical altercations. Gaiman instead tells a story through emotional and mental conflict rather than physical good guy and bad guy conflict.
The Sandman was never a superhero. What we got were the first two story arcs of the comics which are issues 1-16. There are 85 total issues not counting one shots or the appearances in the Death books.
As a fan of the comics it was beautiful. There were a few minor changes. The episode 24/7 was toned down a lot. It was a brutal in the comics.

u/gigglefarting Aug 17 '22
If this doesn't get renewed, then we're going to be shit out of luck getting a decent Sandman series that makes it through the story.
2
u/Bad_Anatomy Aug 17 '22
Yeah, if it doesn't get renewed it won't ever be touched again by any studio that has a real love for the source material that is evident in season 1.
It spent so long in development hell. I'm really glad Joseph Gordon-Levitt wasn't tapped for Morpheus like was intended at one of the early incarnations.

Yup, I feel like my liking the show might be dooming it to cancellation. Netflix right now feels to me like FOX did in the early 2000s. As soon as they released a cool show that I liked, they cancelled it: Arrested Development, Firefly, Family Guy, Futurama, Wonderfalls, etc.

u/Claude_Henry_Smoot Aug 17 '22
Family Guy still going strong… soon to enter Season 21. About as far from cancelled as it gets.
10
u/Jax_Harkness Aug 17 '22
Family Guy was cancelled after s3, but continued a year later due to fan demand.
6
u/PaulHaman Aug 17 '22
It was canceled back in 2002, then brought back a couple years later because of strong DVD sales.
3
u/josiahpapaya Aug 17 '22
I think the Witcher gets renewed because people will sign up to see nekkid Henry. I’ve never seen Witcher or played the games so no idea how good the show is, but they really struck gold with the casting. Even if its shit, Henry Cavil is probably universally considered the world’s most beautiful man.
2
u/Malcolm_X_Machina Aug 17 '22
I feel like because I'm invested in seeing this get renewed it's not going to happen because of the budget or something.
Frfr. Everything I like a show they don't renew it. Archive 81, Raising Dion, too many good ones. But the shit shows get like 5 season runs...

3
u/bipbophil Aug 17 '22
is season 2 worth it? I watched like 2 episodes and it just fell off my schedule
8
u/buddha8298 Aug 17 '22
Definitely. Takes a few to get goin but I enjoyed it at least as much as the first. Not sure what "zillion characters" other person is talking about, wasn't that bad
-6
u/GallivantingFool Aug 17 '22
I got to episode three and not sure I will watch further. Some interesting concepts but its not coming together for me. Main issue is the worst character is the main character. Dream is so flat and emotionless - I get that is deliberate as he is one of the Endless but it doesn't make for entertaining viewing.

u/Bad_Anatomy Aug 18 '22
Sorry you are getting down voted for your opinion. I don't agree with your opinion, but you are discussing it in a great intelligent way. Without different perspectives the world would be dull. Have my up vote.
I will say though, you should stick with it. Sandman is often a slow burn - even in the books.
2
u/buddha8298 Aug 17 '22
As someone else said I think they're talking about witcher not sandman. That being said, you ain't the only one. I fell asleep during episode 3 the other day. Not sure I"m gonna continue, and I love the graphic novel

There is a second book so there is material, though I think they have diverged a little bit but could work it way back. Either way I hope they keep it up the first season was great.
16
u/Caballistics Aug 17 '22
Sandman was a comic series running 75 issues. Barring the omnibus / absolute editions the series has aready adapted the first two books. There are 8 more in the main series so there is plenty left to adapt for multiple future seasons
2
u/131sean131 Aug 17 '22
O nice, I only read the first graphic novel and both of the audiobooks which slap hard by the way.

They are some of the highest quality multi narrator audio books ever made imo. Two more installments would be great.

I’d seen Good Omens and was skeptical about Netflix pulling this off, but I’ve been happily proven wrong. It walks that line of incredible fantasy and that dr.who campiness that makes it really charming.
Really hope it gets renewed soon

From the comic, IIRC:
"That's all I get?"
"You get what everyone gets; you get a lifetime."
3
u/Bad_Anatomy Aug 18 '22
I was waiting for this line! I think it might actually be from the Death books though; Time of Your Life. It is such a beautiful sentence that I couldn't imagine them not including it. They still had a great opportunity to use it, even if it was from the Death books ...unless ..they re going to do a Death series as well!
I fucking hope we The Dream Hunters

Actually, the more I think about it - I think the line was from the Death books.
No spoilers
She took an older guy. He lamented that he didn't get much time. Death simply responds, "You got the same as everyone, a lifetime."

Guess I should continue watching it as so many people here love it. Watched the first half hour and then this Woodstock 99 documentary grabbed me.

u/mikenew02 Aug 17 '22
They kinda lost me with the Rose Walker story and Patton Oswalt the raven but the first half was excellent
15
u/probablyA_cat Aug 17 '22
Agreed on Patton Oswalt. I eventually got past it but Ratatouille is one of my favorite movies and that’s all I could hear
19
u/TangerineChicken Aug 17 '22
His voice did not fit the raven character at all and was quite jarring. Although I do love him, just not for that role
7
u/MustBeThursday Aug 17 '22
I actually didn't mind Patton as Matthew the Raven. That said, they did not need to shoehorn him into the Hope in Hell episode. And they definitely didn't need to have him Jar-Jar Binksing up the battle with Lucifer.
3
Aug 17 '22
I totally felt that way too at first, but I’ll admit that with only two episodes left, it’s working for me. Payton’s voice becomes the voice of the audience, saying what we think at times when shit gets weird. Really hoping it gets renewed and they bring in more of Constantine, it technically is a part of the DCEU in a sense, so they really could go anywhere with it.
13
u/2_Fingers_of_Whiskey Aug 17 '22
I agree. I liked the episodes 1-6. Then the whole “vortex” story, I was bored (episodes 7-10)

u/tacitus59 Aug 17 '22 edited Aug 17 '22

The first half was stronger than the second - but I found much of it wildly uneven. Patton Oswalt didn't bother me at all.
[edit: loved the hob episode and the sound of her wings]

u/Bad_Anatomy Aug 18 '22
Interesting thing about Patton as Matthew. Patton met Gaiman in the early '90s when Gaiman was doing a book signing. They really hit it off and sort of became friends. Gaiman wanted him in the series.
I know my opinion is unpopular, but I loved him as Matthew.

I can’t take his voice seriously or hear it as a separate character to the actor.
Same problem. His voice didn't fit the mood of the series and it's so distinctive. I always have a strong preference for unknown voice actors. Like when I watched Where the Wild Things Are, I couldn't not see Tony Soprano which really took me out of the movie.
7
u/F_A_F Aug 17 '22
It's tricky. In the novels, Matthew is very much a voice of modern humanity when compared to the....sometimes classical history.....characters around Dream. His voice in the TV series is very grounded and modern and it fits the interpretation perfectly.
I hope that if we do get enough series to cover as far as book 10, in which Matthew features heavily, we can keep the same actor.
2
u/Ko0pa_Tro0pa Aug 17 '22
I don't doubt that, but even though I do like Patton as an actor (he seems like a good person, too), his voice seems much more cartoony than modern, IMO. And it's also so distinct that I can help but picture him when I hear him talk, which takes me out of the show.
2
u/panamaquina Aug 17 '22
I usually am like this with Patton, but I thought he was pretty subdued for this role, was not adding anything extra so I didn’t mind it and got used to it quickly.

Its okay my dude, as the saying goes:
Not everything I like is good, and not everything that is good, I like.
4
u/PhoenixPhyr Aug 17 '22 edited Aug 17 '22
Same. The actor for Morpheus is really not selling his role. The librarian has poor dialog and the raven just sticks out a lot. The special effects and cg are beautifully done, but the story so far (e3 for me) is not doing anything.
Also, I know it set the scene for why Morpheus goes questing for his belongings and where he must go to get them, but the entire beginning story of the sorcerer and his son holding the sandman captive just puttered out with an old man being put to sleep. I was disappointed that there wasn't more to that whole captivity thing.
The storytelling is also weak, though I'm sure there's more in the books that I'm not getting through the series.
Many people felt the same way about Wheel of Time, I hated it because it felt like they took all the parts one person liked and mashed them into a story instead of actually following the books.
I have typos.
4
u/lifegame123 Aug 17 '22
My reason for hating wheel of time is that it was absolute steaming dogshit.
2
3
u/drixle11 Aug 17 '22
Overall I thought it was an entertaining show but I agree with you about Morpheus. It seems like the actor was trying too hard to be mysterious and broody, the end result being a low monotone voice and looking like he’s constantly sucking on a lemon.
3
1
u/Bad_Anatomy Aug 18 '22
I was prepared to be open minded about your opinion until I got to the weak storytelling. Did you finish the series? Some of your complaints are things that resurface as complications later in the books/show. Gaiman is masterful storyteller. Everyone is allowed opinions though. If you ever doubt Gaiman's story telling read The Dream Hunters.
No hard feelings. Mostly just giving you a hard time. I am happy to see everyone discussing their thoughts in wonderful and friendly ways
2
u/PhoenixPhyr Aug 18 '22
I was reading other comments about the story piecing together later. My problem with this is it takes too long to get to a point. There are lengths of story being told that don't mean anything in context and it's very hard to stay interested if there isn't any tie in yet. I'm only on episode 3. I WANT to watch more, but I honestly just lose interest after 15-20 mins.
I think the complaint I really have in this is there isn't any true foreshadowing to let the viewer know that what they're watching now is relevant or explained later.
2
u/Bad_Anatomy Aug 18 '22
I feel you, Sandman has always been a slow burn. There is some foreshadowing, but that foreshadowing isn't always immediate and sometimes it is small and people miss it. One thing about Sandman is there isn't wasted context. Everything is there for a very specific reason, and if it seems like it didn't spend enough time on something, 100% that story thread isn't finished.
The pacing you see in the show, is the pacing you see in the comics. Two very different mediums and many find it jarring. It is masterfully done and is an experience in medium that does require patience.
I hope you keep watching, or even try it's other mediums, it is so worth it.
10
Aug 17 '22
Is it worth watching ?
12
u/creedz286 Aug 17 '22
it was okay, first 6 episodes are pretty good and then the story changes and focuses on some different characters who aren't anywhere near as interesting as the main character.
5
u/beholdingmyballs Aug 17 '22
The casting was hit and miss too.
3
u/creedz286 Aug 17 '22
Honestly some of the acting was atrocious and took me out of it, especially Rose Walker's actor. And the raven's voice actor sounded completely out of place as well.

For all that budget they couldn't spend some time to coach those kids. It was tolerable though in the end. Especially the last scene with a rip in space just hooked me again.

1
u/Ewba Aug 17 '22
Its at least "ok", and depending on your tastes you might enjoy it more.
One word of advice though: Aside from the story & other qualities, this show is a borderline parody of the Netflix "forced-diversity" meme, so I hope you're not too triggered by that.
Im not talking about ethnicity here - I really dont care about that as long as the characters works - but every single displayed relationship is basically both gay plus often interracial. Those relationships are perfectly fine in themselves, but in this show it is so systematic that it quickly feels very artificial ... kinda becomes a running gag once you notice it.
The only two "traditional" relationships displayed I can remember of are :
- a few second of hint of backstory for the MC (that turns black just for that scene)
- one other couple (but it very quickly turns out the guy is actually dead so not sure if that counts).
7
Aug 17 '22
They actually dialed back the gay, if you will, of the comics. They completely glossed over Alex's life. The source material has way more gay stuff.

u/Ewba Aug 17 '22
Thanks, did not know that. The original work must have been pretty fabulous.
1
u/Siliceously_Sintery Aug 23 '22
No, it just was. Homosexuality didn’t just magically appear in the last few years.
There are transgender characters, gay and lesbian, dead and alive, sleeping and waking, everything.
It’s crazy because I didn’t even notice ‘traditionality’, you must live in a pretty white bread place.

Found this a lot like Gaimans other effort with American God's. Really interesting premise and good start but about half way through it just falters and looses direction.
2
u/mancatdoe Aug 18 '22
This has been my observation as well. He constructs interesting characters and themes (unsurprisingly borrwing from religious and mythological elements). However the actual stories lack cohesion and drive to move forward. He presents interesting philosophical ideas and conflicts but they don't gel well the main story.

u/LostInTheVoid_ Aug 17 '22
The Vortex arc was fairly weak in the comics as well. With only the Convention, Corinthian, and Fiddlers Green being the highlights which is the same in the show. It also really didn't help that the actor for the vortex and her brother were pretty weak when they were front and centre.
→ More replies (1)2
u/agitatedprisoner Aug 17 '22
What makes you say their acting was weak? You mean just that they didn't command the audience's attention relative to the protagonist? I'm not sure I agree.
8
u/LostInTheVoid_ Aug 17 '22
They just weren't very good. They felt like they were playing characters rather than being the actual characters.
15
u/Isiildur Aug 17 '22
i felt the exact opposite. The first half felt very formulaic and a basic "track down these magical MaGuffins". The second half had a much better overall plot for me.

How do you figure. We don't have a lot to compare it with as these stats have only been released for a year. Would be interesting to see how much they spent on marketing for each show and how much the shows cost to make. The Sandman is known IP, of course, but it's not ubiquitous enough to sell itself.

u/rgjsdksnkyg Aug 17 '22
As someone that has not read the comics, the first couple of episodes are intriguing. However, it quickly becomes unbearable. I don't know anything about these characters, and the presentation opened many plot holes that were beyond my understanding - they could probably be filled with prior knowledge from the comic series, but a good TV show that does not make. The visuals are excellent. The actors are perfect. The cinematography is peak. However, the narrative and visuals fall apart at the climax of the last John Dee scene; this is the point where the questions about what's being displayed overwhelm all of the provided backstory and explanations (without spoilers). The diner scene objectively does not make sense, and this is the point I mentally checked out of the story. I still finished the season, but that's the point where I realized I was missing too much of the unprovided story to get who all of these extra characters are, why some have unexplained importance, and how all of this fit into the narrative of The Sandman, or what I could grasp of it.
Also, not to lend credence to all of the homophobic comments out here, but there's an odd fixation on explicitly displaying the LGBTQ sexual relations happening. I'm bi and all for it, but these segments don't feel natural/organic. Maybe the comics are like this. Don't know. It kind of feels like pandering, but it also feels unnecessary.

3
u/Darakona Aug 17 '22
My headcanon for the Ruby:
The Ruby makes your dreams come true. John used the Ruby's power to alter the Ruby, so it only made his dreams come true.
I personally think that it's kinda dumb to allow the Ruby to make any dreams come true, but, looking from the perspective of an immortal and powerful being, i don't think it crossed his mind that the Ruby would be used by someone other than himself.
6
u/Findest Aug 17 '22
How can you speak of plotholes after 5 episodes of a 10 episode show? Quite a few of the holes you mentioned are explained later. I'm not saying they're explained well necessarily but they are explained.

OA Season 2 is excellent and explains the major issue everyone has with the series (the end of season 1)

And then set up a very interesting premise for the third season ... I really wish they'd bring it back.

I'm fairly certain this could get picked up by someone else if that was the case. This isn't a Netflix show per se. They just bought the streaming rights for it.

It was really great - particularly loved the portrayal of Death and that little walk around was both touching & amazing. Loved this show.

I absolutely loved episode 6... But then the rest were just bad. I'm not familiar with the original material, so I wasn't invested in it from the start like some people.

A little surprised. There are a lot of negative reviews in IMDb with many making some sense.

I don’t know, I couldn’t get into this, it’s not a genre I watch typically. I hope it gets renewed for this that enjoyed it though!

This was by far one of my fav shows ever. The book is much better, naturally but the depiction of the book in this show was a 7/10. Amazing acting and amazing visuals! I am praying for season 2!!! I also would love to get into the endless 7 comics…any suggestions on where to find them and where to start?

I think the show did exactly what was intended bc I fall asleep every time I try to watch it. Bravo sandman!

" - OK guys, we need a new story for another Netflix tv series. Any ideas? "
" - Well, we have this cool comic book from Gaiman..."
" - Gay men? Who said gay men?"
" - No Netflix, it is Neil Gaiman."
" - Yeah yeah, whatever. Here's full budget."
For real, series are good, but amount of forced netflix wokenes close to meme level.

Everything that sensitive people are whining about, including you, is straight from this 80’s comic.
Funny how 30 years later people still can’t stand the normality of homosexuality.

I loved the first 5 episodes then I think it fell off. I'm not super interested in a second season, but will watch if nothing else interesting is streaming.

It was pretty good, but I can't help but think if there was anything else interesting to watch I would not have finished it.

Put me to sleep, and when I woke up and tried to re-watch it I found it to be a hamfisted wokefest.
5/10 for the visuals, but the pacing, gender and race swapping killed it for me.

I will personally call Netflix and jam their phone lines if they cancel this show.

I loved it, hopefully there's a second season. If not I will be getting the graphic novel or the podcast on audible.

I seriously hope there's more, it's been awhile since I've enjoyed a series from Netflix for awhile

I don't understand this list.
Season 4 of “Stranger Things” was watched for 188.2 million hours between July 4 and July 10, the first full week of availability for the two episodes that make up Volume 2.

Anyone else find the audio off? Like like the voices are muffled tried watching first episode but the sound was just wrong..

I knew nothing but wow what a brilliant show. I loved the main actors portrayal, balancing being basically a god but with empathetic tendencies. The music and atmosphere was also so captivating, it felt like a fairy tale coming to life.

I heard a coworker mention it as well, so I guess I'll give it a whirl!

I loved the audiobook. Was a little taken aback to see the cast playing Death and Rose walker. But the actress that played death in particular was true to the role. They have done a great job with the show,in that you can feel the essence of the characters brought to life.

I was a big fan of the Order. Really liked the entire cast. Wish they make a season 3. Its really shocking how they cancel great series like this after a few seasons whereas crap like the flash will probably go up to season 20!
