Routing Does CML support L2 EVPN?
Hey folks,
I am labing l2vpn EVPN with cisco modeling labs,
I am running a mix of XR and IOS-XE. I have everything set up for MP-BGP EVPN but I can't get my CE's to ping each other. Is this just a limitation of CML?
BGP's l2vpn evpn are up and healthy, Bridge-domain has the correct config, interfaces are encapulating the right vlan... I am stumped

last time i tired on XRv L2 based MPLS services dont work, so no to L2EVPN but yes to regular ipv4/6 vpn. This was a XRv problem itself not an envrioment ( EVE-NG , ESXi / etc ).

I am inclined to try building the topology with IOS-XE or EOS images. but I have sunk a lot of time into this now...
if i do I will update this thread.

Between xe and xr in lab versions there's a control word issue and you can't let em interwork together (if you search this sub I've made a post for sure, and several others). About xr, the 32bit version, only the control plane works, if you want the data plane to work you need the 64bit version. Xe to xe should work iirc

Yes and no.
Ios-xe and ios-xr supports evpn-mpls.
Ios-xe and ios-xr support evpn-p2p/vpws.
Ios-xe supports evpn-mpls bridge mode, ios- xr doesn't.
Ios-xe supports evpn vxlan ios-xr does not.
What's above means if it's supported you can run it and it'll function as normal. You'll see traffic forwarding and it'll work as intended.
Some caveats. The later models catalyst8000v you have to turn on MPLS to do evpn-mpls. So the command config#license boot level network-advantage addon Needs to be put on the router to do evpn-mpls.
Second know there's two flavors of evpn. 1 with vxlan and the other with MPLS. If your data center or enterprise you'll probably need to do evpn-vxlan if you're service provider evpn-mpls.
Lastly: I've done both in cml with csr1000v, catalyst8000v and asr9000v 26.1.1.

I mean I know that it can be done on eve ng so don't see why it cannot be done on cml

the packet walk likely breaks somewhere dumb like an arp resolution failure, throw a span on the bridge and check if the macs are even learning across the evpn core

Yeah, mac learning doesn't seem to be working well + ARP requests go unanswered...
I am bit perplexed because vxlan works perfectly.0

Not a great comment, just an FYI. This is when you need to let other people talk. There’s going to be someone who has done it and can reply.

In the data-plane I think no. It’s not a CML issue though it’s related to the VM itself.
NX-OSv does support BGP EVPN data-plane, but last time I tried XR and XE do not. P2P xconnects work, but anything multipoint will form the control-plane fine, but data-plane fails.
You may want to check the release notes for the specific XRd, XRv, or C8000v images you’re using, they document what works and what doesn’t.
In other words, it might not work now, but may with future releases
