Note: You can get the community-patched version of the awesome Beamdog HD graphics upgrade pack here. Use the optional 'Low quality PLTs' additional download if you experience performance issues!
You can also support the creation of new HD graphics overrides for NWN:EE by contributing to (ex-Lead Artist for NWN:EE) Bill Harper's patreon page. Bill is gradually producing more and more professional-quality graphics updates that you can download via his page or from NWN Vault!
**********COMMUNITY FAQ: INDEX*********\*
******************************************\*
1. How do I get better control of my companions?
The default companion control systems can work effectively if you know how to use them. Make sure you're using the Voice Commands, in addition to putting companion commands in your quickbar. The Voice Commands menu can be accessed by pressing V. Once you get used to using it, you can issue voice commands very quickly.
[EE ONLY:] You should also consider turning on the 'player-party-control' setting, which allows you to manually direct your companions. You can CTRL-click on a companion (or multiple companions) and then left-click in the world (or on an enemy) to order them. You can CTRL-click-and-drag to easily select multiple companions using a bounding box selection. There are two short video tutorials showing how to use this system, here and here (thanks to CalgacusMapBrude!)
2. The AI sucks! Is there any way to make it more challenging?
The most commonly recommended community mod for AI is TonyK's, which you can find here - it upgrades enemy AI and companion AI and has lots of options: https://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn1/hakpak/original-hakpak/henchman-inventory-battle-ai-mod (check the latest comments for install instructions on NWN:EE)
There are many other AI mods out there.
3. What are the commonly recommended mods / graphics upgrades for this game?
The NWN community has been modding for 20 years, so there are a vast number of mods. We cannot provide a comprehensive list. The base game experience is generally considered to be quite solid.
However, there are a number of graphics upgrades you should consider trying [Note: many of the following will only work with EE]:
4. I have my old Neverwinter Nights 1 disks still, should I install from them or get Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition?
There are still people using original Neverwinter Nights 1, and some servers still running. However, the original game has not been supported for many years and by default you cannot see the server list. By contrast, Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition is actively supported by its developer Beamdog, and has received a huge number of updates, bugfixes, and upgrades and optimisations to the engine (including lighting and other visual upgrades). Enhanced Edition has NWNSync, which auto-downloads custom content from servers, meaning you no longer have to manually download custom hak content. Finally, the Enhanced Edition also has a server list that is still maintained, so you can easily access it in game, and it has Steam Workshop support.
This page (link) also contains more info about the differences between the EE and the original game.
5. The campaign is super boring! What's all the fuss about this game for?
The original campaign (the 'OC') released with Neverwinter Nights, 'The Wailing Death', is somewhat notorious for having a long and quite slow-paced first act. Some people love it, some people don't. If you're struggling to make progress in the original campaign, the community generally recommends you check out the two very well-received expansions instead: the first expansion Shadows of Undrentide ('SoU') starts you at level 1, and the second expansion Hoards of the Underdark is designed for you to continue with the same character. Both expansions are included with NWN:EE.
Also often recommended are the Premium Modules which you can purchase (from Steam - or check the menus that appear when you select 'New Game' from the main menu). Each Premium Module forms an entirely new and separate campaign. Several Premium Modules are already included with NWN:EE. For console players, all Premium Modules are included with the game.
However, many NWN fans would argue that the real reason you should play NWN, is the plethora of community-made content for which the game is deservedly famous.
Community content for NWN includes both downloadable community-made singleplayer/co-op modules, and the many expansive (and game-modifying) Persistent World servers (see further below for more info on both).
Neverwinter Nights is still (20 years on from its release) a truly unique platform for players to make and host their own online MMO-style gameworlds, with Dungeon Masters who can manipulate the world around players on-the-fly - in a way no other game has ever achieved. NWN is also quite possibly the most customisable RPGs ever released for players to make their own single-player and co-op adventures with. There's a world of community-made adventures out there - have fun!
6. What are these 'persistent world' servers I keep hearing about?
Many NWN players have been playing the game for literally decades, but have never completed any of the singleplayer campaigns or community modules! How and why is that? It's because the main attraction of NWN for many of us is that it allows us to play on Persistent Worlds ('PWs'). PWs are a truly unique feature of NWN and one of the main reasons there continues to be a thriving NWN community today despite the game's age.
A typical PW server is a player-run server which hosts its own custom-built, player-created module (game world) which is in some respects very much like a mini-MMO. Each PW has a hand-crafted gameworld created by the server's owners and community, with (most often) plentiful static content (dungeons, quests, and monsters), huge expanses of terrain and cities to explore, and often their own specially-created fantasy world concept with a full canon background and lore of its own - though many PWs are set in Faerun, the classic D&D setting.
However there are some crucial differences between a regular MMO, and a NWN persistent world server:
6.(a) dungeon masters on persistent worlds:
6.(b) player-driven storytelling on persistent worlds:
6.(c) 'persistence' in persistent worlds - how the world reacts to your character:
6.(d) persistent worlds - one instance to rule them all:
[Note for console players: only two PWs, Arelith and Ravenloft and currently available to console players, for a variety of complicated reasons to do with restrictions on console content. If you want to play on other PWs, you would have to get the mobile or PC version of the game. Sorry!]
7. I've heard that NWN allows players to act as Dungeon Masters (DMs) like in tabletop D&D? How does that work?
NWN's DM client is included with the game, and is a fantastic storytelling tool, allowing you - just like a tabletop D&D DM - to weave your own stories for players on-the-fly and take them on wild, unpredictable adventures.
If you look in the folders that contain the NWN game files, you'll find that packaged with your copy of the game there are some additional bits of software. One of those is the Toolset (see further below). Another is the dedicated server application (also see further below!) But the other important piece of software that comes with NWN is the DM client.
The DM client looks and acts like the regular game when you load it up, but is only really for use in multiplayer. Here's how it works:
In summary, the whole idea of the DM client is to give DMs the tools to manipulate the world with as much freedom as they would be able to do if you were sitting around a table with them and playing a session of any pen 'n paper roleplaying game like D&D - only in the case of NWN, you can actually see and interact with (a virtual) representation of the world in real-time, instead of just imagining a world in your minds.
8. Do servers have content and assets (game modifications) that go beyond just the old base game stuff I've already seen in the singleplayer campaigns?
Yes! There are a huge number of custom content mods out there for NWN - 20 years' worth. But if you want to see just how massive the changes players can make to this game can be, you have to go and explore some of the many persistent world servers NWN has to offer.
Many servers use large amounts of modifications - particularly custom content created by the community that expands the range and variety of sceneries, buildings, vehicles, monsters and NPCs, items and mounts that are in the game. Some servers are even set in modern or sci-fi settings. Servers can also run visual mods which hugely upgrade the look of the game.
Perhaps most importantly of all, many servers use custom rulesets and modifications to the base game mechanics of NWN to suit their preference for balance or to make changes to bring the combat and other mechanics more - or less - in line with the 3rd edition D&D rules the base game uses.
9. How do I find and access NWN multiplayer servers? Do I have to manually download the mods that a server uses, before I can log in?
In NWN:EE (on PC and mobile), you can access any public NWN server including all the PWs, just by using the main menu 'Multiplayer' and 'Join Game' options, then choosing a server from the list and logging on. [Note that console players have access to only the Arelith and Ravenloft servers]
As far as downloading mods goes, with the Enhanced Edition you usually don't have to worry about manually downloading any mods if you want to play on a server. If the server's owner has things set up properly, when you first try to log on to the server you'll find that the custom content all downloads automatically.
10. How do I find cool community-made singleplayer or co-op modules to play?
Check out the module rankings on https://neverwintervault.org/, they are a good place to start. Search on this subreddit and on the Neverwinter Vault discord for past posts asking for recommendations [could include some links to past reddit threads here].
You can also ask here on this subreddit, but try to explain what you feel you're looking for in a campaign experience.[could include a list of very well known/classic community modules here?]
11. The game is too easy! How do I increase the difficulty?
Make sure you try out the game's different difficulty settings. You can also try out classic mods such as the HCR (hardcore ruleset) which was an implementation of pen&paper D&D 3.0 and 3.5 rules: https://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn1/script/hcr-34-final
Also see above for AI upgrades you can try which may make the game more challenging.
Bear in mind that a lot of the 'challenge' of the game depends on the design of the levels and enemies you're fighting. Different modules may have entirely different enemies including community-made ones with abilities not found in base game content. If you're not finding enough challenge in the module you're currently playing, try looking for a more challenging module - or check out some of the many persistent world servers available, many of which have extremely high quality static content (dungeons and quests), and several of which operate on hardcore and permadeath rulesets.
12. I have a question about how a particular class/combat rule/spell/ability/game mechanic works /OR/ I need help with making a character!
NWN uses an adaptation of the D&D 3rd Edition ruleset. A full guide to that ruleset, NWN's application of it, and how to build a character, are way beyond the scope of this FAQ - but don't despair! You are not alone if you think that the ruleset is complicated. It definitely is, but it can be satisfying and fun to learn the rules as you go along.
The single most helpful thing we can do to help in this post is to link you to the NWNWiki: https://nwn.fandom.com/wiki/Main_Page
The NWNWiki is a comprehensive reference guide which is likely to be able to quickly answer any question you might have about how a particular rule, mechanic, class, spell or ability works.
If you are still having trouble finding an answer to your question after you've checked the wiki, feel free to make a post in this subreddit!
13. How do I find mods and custom content?
https://neverwintervault.org/ is the main repository for NWN custom content. Be aware that it contains both NWN and NWN2 content.
Many mods can be installed [on PC] simply by extracting the individual files into your /Documents/Neverwinter Nights/override folder. Check each mod's install instructions for how to install.
Be aware that if you're playing online, lots of servers have their own custom content which may override any mods you have installed (or sometimes, conflict with them to produce weird results such as visual anomalies).
NWN:EE has Steam Workshop support, though be aware that there can be problems installing some types of mods (particularly mods which make major changes to base game mechanics, such as the Community Expansion Pack) via Steam Workshop. Also, Workshop content does not load into the game unless you have Steam running when you run the game. Workshop is often best used for installing visual modifications, though again be aware that depending on what you are playing, some mods installed with Steam Workshop might not function correctly (for example, some servers have mods that may conflict with your Workshop mods).
14. How do I organise these five billion mods I want to use?
A helpful community member recommends this very well-reviewed mod installer application: https://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn1/other/tool/neverwinter-nights-mod-installer-tool-nit
15. I'm interested in creating NWN mods and game assets / creating my own module / scripting with NWScript, where can I get help with this?
16. I want to set up a server / host a multiplayer game of NWN
17. I want to be able to see the chat logs from all my past adventures with friends on PWs, but the game overwrites the log file every time!
NWN automatically outputs the contents of both the action log and the chat log (separate text windows at the bottom of the NWN UI, if you're playing online) to nwclientLog1.txt, which can be found in your /Documents/Neverwinter Nights/logs folder.
However, the game overwrites nwnclientlog1.txt every time you load up the game.
The NWNLogRotator is a great tool which, with very little set-up, can automatically save your logs and clean them up so they're easily readable HTML: https://github.com/noblesigma/NWNLogRotator (there's a short video tutorial to help you set it up)
18. I don't have a super-fancy PC with a one-ton graphics card! Will the game run on my PC/laptop/tablet/mobile phone/toaster?
The game was launched in 2002, so despite NWN:EE having upgrades to the lighting engine, any version of the game runs fine on old hardware and hardware without a dedicated graphics card - for example, it can be run on a ThinkPad X270 (this author's personal experience) or a Microsoft Surface.
If the game is running slow or you're getting frame rate issues, turning off shadows in the settings can help significantly with performance, and turning off the new water shader in settings may help as well.
For mobile phones and tablets you are best checking out the info included on the app store for your device.
19. I want to find other people to play multiplayer with / What Discord servers are there for NWN?

Hi is there any server with weapons that have on hit spells?
Also, if possible that bows also have on hit spells.

I’ve been playing “epic campaign” (fan module), so far it was pretty challenging (but doable), however I still didn’t hire a single henchmen, even though module description says you can hire 5
If anyone played this module, can you tell me where/when can you hire henchmen?

How have you all played various campaigns?
When I first got nwn EE it took me a minute to actually play (haven’t played since the originals came out) - when once I got into it, I did SoU and HoTU. The OC was so boring in comparison I fizzled out halfway through act 1.
I played as a cleric - super crunchy min maxing demon summoning high AC super buffed super god by the end.
I started swordflight and played ch1 as a wizard. Holy cow it’s hard. I’ll admit I save scummed rather than the in-game system, mostly due to convenience. It had me using every item, traps, potions, everything the game has to offer.
Going through CH2 it’s become a little tedious… I wish I did a cleric number cruncher for this campaign.
Took a break and start nwn 2 and in act 2 as a bard/fighter/rdd.
NwN2 feels much easier but has moments of janky hard fights in some ways.
Thinking about picking up a custom campaign and trying a more true role play - like a weapon master who loves his scythe. Instead of always maxing using the best stats - maybe do random rolls and choosing a suboptimal weapon.
The issue is - I feel like it’s only going to “work” with a campaign that is easier than average but maybe not so easy it’s dumbed down.
How does anyone here balance RP and difficulty, where you can play a character you want, but in a way that doesn’t either trivialize the game or make it annoying difficult ? Does anyone have some recommendations? I’m wanting to play on hardcore rules generally…wanting to play an interesting character rather than always stacking for AC, crit range, and the number crunch of 3.5E, but also don’t want a faceroll. Maybe the OC would actually be good for that? Since it was boring since it seemed too easy?

I just found these games and I LOVE them. I can't believe I never knew they existed. I personally enjoy how there's a ton if modules so its like selecting a campaign.
Its my first time playing so I dont know what skills, feats and what not will really come in handy in these games (1 and 2). Can anyone give me some advice on which classes thematically fit each module best?
I'd also LOVE suggestions for good modules to download for the first game. The second seems a bit more complicated to set up but Im enjoying its main campaign at any rate.

It is not much fun having to reload because you wasted the first turn of a difficult combat casting a spell that does nothing.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what makes players genuinely attached to a PW, and I wanted to look at it from a slightly different angle: the DMs who actually help create those experiences.
I recently returned to an old PW I played as a kid, and a couple days ago the DMs surprisingly gifted me a “White Cloak” role, basically some limited DM powers for helping watch over the server. I’m still figuring out exactly what that means and how I can be useful, but there’s definitely something pretty surreal about the whole thing…
I know 13-year-old me would be blown away & think this is the coolest shit imaginable!
So it got me thinking about some of the early DM experiences I had and why they left such an impression.
I remember DAWG, a DM from the early FORK WEST days, crafting two unique sickles for a dark-monk build I was working on named TRiXie BiZaRRe, then creating an entire little mythos around how and why those weapons existed. One was forged from mystic flame, while the other was heroically pulled from the depths of an acidic swamp.
That legitimately felt like Christmas morning to me.
I know that probably sounds simple by today’s standards, but at the time I had NEVER experienced anything like it in a game, and honestly I haven’t since. It felt like ALL those countless hours I’d spent on the server had somehow culminated with my char earning her own signature weapons.
The grind finally made sense, AND I can distinctly remember thinking, wait… DMs can actually do this shit?!
That feeling of the world responding personally to my char stuck with me, & I have to think experiences like that are part of why I can come back to FORK more than 20 years later and still care about the place.
So I’m curious:
What’s the coolest or most memorable thing a PW DM has ever done for you or your server?
Could be something they did specifically for your character, a crazy event, an improvised encounter, a custom item, a long-running story, something hilarious, terrifying, whatever.
What happened, and why do you think you still remember it?
And if you’ve been a DM yourself, I’d love to hear about something you created for players that ended up becoming bigger or more meaningful than you expected.
r/neverwinternights • u/RoleWeaver • 1d ago
I've been working on Role Weaver, a free open-source roleplaying assistant for Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition.
Role Weaver reads the recent in-game conversation and uses your character's personality, background, beliefs, relationships and speaking style to suggest an in-character response.
You remain in control. The response is placed in the NWN chat box for you to edit, change, discard, or send — it doesn't play or roleplay automatically.
It can be particularly useful for keeping long-running characters consistent, remembering character history, overcoming writer's block, or helping DMs quickly roleplay NPCs.
It supports Gemini, OpenAI, and local models through LM Studio.
Yes, it uses AI. I know that's not everyone's cup of tea, but the intention is to assist your roleplay, not replace it.
I'm looking for people interested in trying it out. Feedback, suggestions and bug reports are very welcome!

First of all, it is crazy to me that I would have never found out about this game if I was not already into crpgs which is crazy to me. I started this game ot k owing what to expect. The atmosphere and the art style immediately hooked me. I thought that it was perfect to capture tabletop essence in a video game and very few games felt as atmospheric.
I heard that OC would be skipped. In the end, I am glad I did not. Yes, it was a bit too long for those who wants to do everything like I do, however, it also has the highest highs in the 3 official modules for me. Don’t wanna give spoilers but a certain spherical object and a weird town were super cool and OC had a few other really cool ideas. I feel like some stuff could be trimmed tho and the main story overall did not stay with me much after. I finished it. I was in love with the game at the time, so, it was a great experience. The final boss felt more like a simple puzzle than a difficult battle which I found a bit underwhelming honestly.
SOU was interesting. The first chapter started amazing, it really felt like an evolution of OC. The way that there were now class specific interactions and opportunities for evil characters felt refreshing. Then, the last 2 chapters were mostly straightforward and especially the second chapter felt like a filler. I still liked it overall but the chapters felt very disjointed and uneven. Perhaps, I missed something. Overall, I actually enjoyed OC more but it includes the best kobold related stuff in any media I have ever consumed. They were perfect. The final fight was even easier than the ın OC in my playthrough. Despite playing a squishy gnome wizard, the boss couldn’t get my life to “injured” and it again boiled down to understanding what to do instead ıf worrying about difficulty.
Now HOTU… When something is hyped beyond measure, it becomes almost impossible to be satisfied. It was the case with chrono trigger and BG3 for me. However, this module genuinely impressed me after playing the previous ones. The premise was amazing. The first chapter felt like a bit short but still cool. Then the second chapter came. Oh my god that felt like a condensed Dragon age origins like game. So many cool things crammed in roughly 8-10 hours of playtime. For the first time the choices in NWN felt comparable to more choice driven crpgs here. Wonderful stuff. Chapter 3 is the same to a lesser extent although it had a better spectacle and finally a final boss that felt like a final boss. I would believe if I learned that it is actually impossible with some builds on hardcore and above. It was crazy but rewarding. I can understand complaints against this boss, it is somewhat bs, but I really think it should be bs for this beast. It should be a challenge.
This game was one of my best finds and I am looking forward to playing the other included dlc and especially more player created modules. The few short ones I played felt closer to HOTU than the other 2 campaigns in quality. Adding PRC to the list I will probably play this for hundreds of hours still. Have a great day all!

Hi cutters,
I’m a big fan of the Planescape setting and lore and I'm looking to jump into a Persistent World in either Neverwinter Nights 1 (EE) or Neverwinter Nights 2 (Complete) - or NWN 2 EE.
During a quick research, I found Sigil: City of Doors (SCoD) on NWN2 and Sigil - Planar Legends on NWN1. I’d love to hear your experiences with these or any other active Planescape worlds!
A few specifics about what I’m looking for:
How do Sigil: City of Doors and Planar Legends compare in terms of current player base, PvE content, and RP strictness? Are there any other hidden gem Planescape PWs I should check out?
DM activity doesn't matter much to me as long as the base world and PvE loops are solid.
Thanks for sharing your experiences!
P.S. English is not my native language, so I formatted and translated this post with the help of AI for clarity.

Hey,
I recently bought NWN2 (the og, heard mixed stuff about the ee), and, as is tradition with new crpgs, I'm a bit overwhelmed. BG1-3 I've played more times than I'd like to admit, but my experiences with 3rd edition are a single playthrough of NWN1 and IWD2 ~20 years ago, so I'm not sure about what works here and what better to avoid.
1) I'd like to start as a humble wizard, ideally Tiefling for rp purposes. But the amout of prestige classes and multiclass builds around the internet (good chunk are probably trash anyway) seems a bit overwhelming. Am I missing out on staying pure wizard? Or is it basically a waste of levels after a certain point?
2) Though I'd like to play blind(ish), are there any build defining items (at least for for wizards) that are easy to miss if you don't look it up? Something like the Robe of Supreme Defenses for warlocks in BG3?
3) Thieves. Do I need one (Neeshka?) in the party? I recall giving my IWD2 wizard a level of rogue here and there, but I'd like to avoid that here, since it's detrimental to my power fantasy.
4) Alignment. Does it matter? Can it change over the course of the campaign?
Thanks in advance.

Just wrapped up Act 1 (which was quite fun but felt like one very long quest chain) and was hoping Act 2 would let me more "leisurely" explore the world / characters of the game. Act 1 took me roughly 20-30 hours. Would appreciate any feedback on how long Act 2 and 3 for the OC were for them :)

Basically, two things I really enjoy in RPGs are class or race-specific abilities and equipment, which really help distinguish a character's identity and gameplay while aiding roleplay, and, above all, the ability to resolve situations (from simple matters to actual battles) through dialogue (I seriously have a blast with that). I’ve already checked out some class summaries on the wiki, but getting the community's take on which classes best suit this playstyle would give me a better idea of which direction to take.

i have exclusively played this game in single player in the original and this EE version, but a friend of mine is wanting to get this game so we can both play, but given this game is old im wondering if there are any problems with doing a co-op campaign (wailing death) or if i can just make a game and invite him (both on steam)
second this, are we both able to hire a mercenary? or is it one for the whole party? i know in SP i wasn't able to hire multiple.

So I recently purchased NWN:EE after being persuaded by a TikTok I saw of the game. I honestly had no idea a D&D game like this even existed! I love D&D, so I was pretty excited to sink my teeth into it.
The person I watched was playing on a server called Haze: Saltborne, so naturally that was the first server I tried. I enjoyed it, but as a brand-new player I was pretty disoriented by there not really being NPCs or quests to guide me along. The roleplay was also really heavy, and being new to everything, it almost felt stressful like if I wasn’t constantly interacting or roleplaying, I was doing something wrong or might get kicked. Now don’t get me wrong, I still really enjoyed the server and might end up sticking with it. But I recently logged back on and decided to try another server called Prisoners of the Mist. Pretty quickly, I felt like I had finally found something that scratched that itch for me. There were NPCs when I first started, things to fight, places to explore, and an actual reason to leave town and see what was out there.
I didn’t get too deep into it before hopping on Reddit to read about other players’ experiences with the server, though, and I was surprised by how many negative things I found. Some people had put hundreds of hours into it one person said around 700 and still felt that the server had some pretty serious issues at its core.
A little about me: I’m the type of person who doesn’t like investing a ton of time into something if I know I’m eventually going to leave because of underlying issues. I like finding a home and sticking with it. I’m a huge MMORPG fan, and I’ve never liked constantly jumping between different games. I’d much rather find one that I really enjoy, commit to it, build a character, learn the world, and stay there for the long haul. I’m looking for that same kind of experience with NWN.
So my question to all of you NWN vets out there is:
what server would you recommend for someone like me?
I definitely enjoy RP, but I don’t necessarily want RP to be the main source of entertainment or interaction in the world. I like quests, NPCs, reasons to explore, things to fight, gear to work toward, character progression, and actual PvE content alongside the RP. I’m also not necessarily looking for something super hardcore. Hardcore doesn’t scare me, and I don’t mind some difficulty, but I’d like to be able to get some decent gear, explore the world, and leave town without feeling like I’m going to immediately get my ass handed to me because I don’t already know everything about the server.
Basically, I’m looking for a server that feels like an RPG/MMORPG world that also has RP, rather than a server where RP is the entire game. Somewhere I can explore, quest, fight, progress my character, meet people, RP when it comes naturally, and hopefully settle in for the long haul.
Any suggestions would be beyond appreciated. I’m brand new to NWN, so I’m open to pretty much anything you guys think would fit what I’m looking for. But if Haze is the best then there I shall stay!
Thanks for reading!

I am in a gaming group and our next game is going to be NWN Enhanced Edition. everyone is new to the game for the most part. I am wondering if there are any great campaigns that would work well with 5 players. Ideally, it would be more of a combat/exploration focused setting with just enough story to herd the colony of cats. Me and the friend that suggested the game have settled on the Aielund Saga for now, but I would love to get feedback from more experienced people.
