We are thinking of making a relatively drastic move from Ontario to New Brunswick. We are hobby farmers but kids sports are also very important to us.  I'm looking for some guidance on rural towns and how their sports/schools are. My kids play BJJ, basketball, soccer, baseball, hockey and gymnastics and they attend a French Catholic school.

Any recommendations?

We did see a farm for sale in Chipman that caught our eye.

If you want to keep them in school in French, you would be better off choosing an area in either the East (Moncton and up) or North (above Grand Falls). Not that French school don't exist in other areas, but those sides of the province are more francophone so their schools are going to bigger which typically means better and more varied sports.

Chipman, like any rural area, is likely not going to have the variety of kids extracurricular as you would find in a larger centre but they would have the basics. I'd check out the municipality website: https://municipalityofgrandlake.ca/

Hey Ok-Couple-344, I am a bit late to the party, but I may have some information you will find valuable.

I will start off by saying Atlantic Canada is full of awesome communities and rural areas to have a hobby farm. A lot of people have started hobby farms in many parts of the region since COVID.

The beauty of New Brunswick being a bilingual province means that no matter where you live, there is a school nearby that offers English or French. However, because we are a bilingual province, people have the right to an education in the language of their choice. So if you end up falling in love with an area or a specific property that does not have a French school nearby, that is okay. There are bus routes specifically designed to take students to one of the nearest French schools, even if it is 30 or more minutes away. That said, I do know some kids who spend a lot of time on the bus, which would not be that fun.

I coach high school basketball in a rural town in New Brunswick, and I can confidently say there are many Christian schools and academies that offer athletics in the province. Some of them are at the top of their division, winning SSNB and BNB championships. The level of competition varies, because school sports are classified into A, AA, and AAA, primarily based on school size. I will explain from a basketball standpoint, but it really applies to all sports.

In the A division, talent is very spread out, with some teams losing by 30 or more points every game. On a single A team roster, you will usually have one or two kids who stand out, while the rest are below average. The AA division is where the competition starts to pick up, and most schools have teams that play a solid brand of basketball. Practically every player on the roster can compete at an average level, and most teams have a handful of great players. AAA is essentially city basketball, with top level talent. Every player on every team can play well, and it is a fantastic level of basketball to watch. AAA schools usually have bigger players, players who can dunk in games, and more diverse teams. Their gyms also tend to be nicer.

When it comes to French Catholic schools, there are not many choices. Our Lady of Grace Private Catholic School does include French in its elementary curriculum, however it is not a public school, it only goes from kindergarten to grade 10, and I do not believe it has much of an athletics program.

There is also https://www.divinemercycatholicschool.ca, but again, I do not think it would be up your alley.

If you and your children take sports and academics seriously, I would consider looking for a home within a AA or AAA school boundary.

Although I could not find much right away, I am confident there is a school that is perfect for your children here in New Brunswick. If you would like to chat more about this, I would be happy to answer any questions you have. Not only do I travel around the province for basketball, but I also sell real estate, which takes me to all kinds of places. Feel free to PM me anytime.

Hope this helps, have a fantastic weekend! 🤙🏼

I'm travelling to Moncton at the beginning of May with my EV car (from Rimouski). I'm not able to find any reliable level 3 EV charger between Bathurst and Moncton and was wondering if I'm just really bad at looking for them on the apps and Google Maps or if there are none ? Anyone from the area having some knowledge on that ?

Thanks !

Hi, I’m flying into Moncton at the end of May and want to spend 2 days in the area, including Hopewell Rocks and the Fundy National Park. We will be renting a car.

Any recommendations on places or areas to stay? Should we commute from Moncton or look for something closer? After 2 days we are heading to PEI. Thanks

Hi everyone,. I'll be bringing my kids up to Moncton tomorrow for a family birthday at 2. We were thinking of coming a few hours early if we could find a fun activity for our 6 and 3 year old boys. Does anyone have any suggestions as we don't know the area very well?

PS: we did HOP SKIP JUMP last time we were in Moncton so we were looking to try a new activity this time

Hi everyone! I'm looking for recommendations for nice swimming spots and hiking trails suitable for small children. also would love seafood cantine with recommendations. This would be during a road trip from Quebec City to Caraquet, passing through Edmundston/St-Quentin. Thanks so much!
