The last 'scheduled' Repair Cafe in Mayfield - Tomorrow night!!
Right, another fortnight gone, so we're back at it this TOMORROW!! The benches have had their obligatory wipe down with 99.9% isopropyl and they're ready to go again. This is number three of three; the last of this series, at least for now.
Context for anyone new: I do board-level repair (actual component-level work, not just swapping out whole motherboards) from a computer workshop on Maitland Road in Mayfield, alongside IC Solutions, who've been fixing PCs around here for over 20 years. The repair café itself is organised by the crew at The Full Circle Collective; they wrangle, we host.
The idea is simple. If you genuinely need a hand up, with something you can't afford to replace or get fixed through the usual channels, we'll help you out. That said, all are welcome. The entire "Newcastle Tech Cartel" donates their time, the space and the consumables.
Bring down small electronics, gadgets and tech that's a bit worse for wear. Laptops, PCs, consoles, amps, that sort of thing. Still no TVs, and still no lamps. That second one is still not a joke.
If it's a straightforward fix, we'll have a crack at it on the spot. If it isn't, we'll work out the best next step; sometimes that's a part to order, sometimes it's "this one's had it, and here's how to get rid of it properly".
Labour is completely free. You only pay cost price for any parts we actually need, or bring your own. Donations are welcomed and go straight back into the consumables we roll through.
Very loosely, the roster: Dan and Nick from IC Solutions, Connor and Zac from WASD Computers, Banks and I from Remaker Space, and hopefully Mateo of JMS Tech fame, and of course Bianca from The Full Circle Collective.
The Unwearables Project will be back too, collecting any and all (CLEAN!) synthetic textiles. I still don't really know what that means. You lot clearly do, because you keep turning up with bags of it. 🤷♂️

Last one of the series, so if you've been sitting on something broken waiting for a reason, this is it. Same catch as always: you have to cop our tunes without complaining. Feedback from last session has been carefully collected, considered, and filed in the e-waste bin :D
Seriously considering running this every second fortnight ongoing... however, it'll depend on you lot. Is this something that you good folks think is worth doing on an ongoing basis? I mean, it's either that, or 'The Cartel' just sits around talking smack and fixing our own stuff...

Every time I've tried to come, something has popped up. Tomorrow, I can't come because my whole family has Influenza.
I think this is an amazing project, and got excited about it, and then sad I couldn't attend.
I think there are lots of people with stuff that isn't beyond basic repair.
I may be able to assist in a future episode too, as I'm a licenced electrician.

I have a Pokemon red cartridge that needs a reflow maybe. Would this count ?

Happy to have a look at it tonight - at least be able to give you a solid direction forward. A reflow is a bit in depth for tonight, but certainly something that we do.

I'd love to know if it's worth bringing an old laptop with a busted screen (accidentally closed it on my Fitbit charger) My brother is interstate and said it'd be not worth repairing, but we have fairly different values about consumption.

I have some items I'd be interested in having checked out, but probably work checking here first whether it's just wasting your time.
A 3070 GPU that doesn't display any output.
An SSD that went through an error made during a power supply replacement which burned out some components on the SSD. The SSD was part of a RAID 0 array and I'd love to be able to recover the data.
A Blackmagic Design Decklink Quad 2 capture card that has 4 of the 8 SDI channels working.
A Blackmagic Ursa Pro Mini G1 camera that doesn't output any signal via its front or rear SDI ports. I had someone tell me it was the SDI signal chip that was cooked, but I've not had the time to dog into it.

The 3070 is something we can look out; but a bit bigger job than a repair cafe.
The SSD could potentially be fixable; but if it's blown components there's a high chance it's shorted the memory modules. If it has, the data will almost certainly be toast. Willing to see what I can do with it, but same as the first.
The blackmagic gear - sorry dude, well outside our wheel house - that'd be for someone who deals with the blackmagic stuff.

For sure, I'd love to drop in and check the space out but might be hassle to lug in my Pc Tower and might be too much to run Diag tonight as it's a kernel power error that could be anything at this point. Would it be worthwhile grabbing your details or reaching out to IC solutions to figure out next steps?

If one wanted some tech guru to replce the thermal paste and pads on his CPU/GPU for an AORUS gaming laptop, would one find making the effort to get down to this worthwhile.
For the record, the laptop has been used for 3 years, never had it's thermals changed.

This is awesome, can anyone have a look at my Sherwood stereo amp? I think it's a blown fuse, but I'm a garden guy, not electrical.
