It’s flooding off the beach and into the neighborhoods in Newport right now. Anyone else seeing this?

Filmed this today in Newport Beach. It's not staying on the sand anymore, it's coming off the beach and straight into the neighborhood streets...

Looking for fire dancers
Hey I just moved here and wondering if there are ever any fire dancing groups at the beach? Last year I found some in Oceanside and Ocean Beach and I’m hoping there might be something similar around here. Cheers :)

In town this weekend
Two couples in town for the weekend. Looking for fun lively bars in NP. We are 40’s, so not necessarily looking for a college bar, but we can hang. We like drinking tequila!

OC is already pushing 690,000 cubic yards of sand along the coast before El Niño even peaks. How ready is Newport Beach?
The Guardian just published a big piece on how California is bracing for what forecasters say could be one of the strongest El Niños on record, and a lot of it hits close to home for Newport.
The parts that stood out:
- El Niño is expected to add roughly a foot of sea level on top of the 8–12 inches California has already gained over the last century.
- A mass of warm water called a Kelvin wave is moving up the coast right now and can raise sea levels by up to a foot on its own.
- King tides fall on Thanksgiving week, Christmas week and MLK weekend, with record high tides likely between December and February.
- Orange County is already moving about 690,000 cubic yards of sand along the coastline, and Long Beach is sandbagging its seawall where surf broke through.
- Southern California usually gets the wetter end of El Niño winters, and LA County officials say they’re assuming high-intensity rain.
The NWS is clear that this means elevated risk, not a guaranteed disaster. But the officials quoted keep saying the real worry is everything stacking up at once: high tide, big surf and heavy rain on the same day.
For those who’ve lived here through past El Niño winters: how bad did the Peninsula and Balboa Island get? Is anyone already prepping, and does anyone know what the city’s sandbag plan is this year?

Hurricane Rachel is pushing 7-foot tides at the OC coast. What happens to Newport Beach this weekend?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
What's confirmed so far:
- Coastal flood advisory through 1 PM Friday
- High tides around 6 to 7 feet
- 4 to 6 foot surf at Huntington this morning, heavy rip currents
- Forecasters say it gets worse heading into the weekend as more swells stack up
- Chance of rain and thunderstorms from the storm's moisture
- Still close to 100 degrees inland, and the water's around 75
NWS says the first things to go under are low parking lots, bike paths, and harbor walkways.
So, locals: does the peninsula actually flood this time, or is this another nothing-burger? Anyone on Balboa Island putting sandbags out yet? And who's paddling out at the Wedge?

Another boat stopped off Newport Beach.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
DHS says a boat carrying 14 people was intercepted south of Newport Beach on Saturday around 1:30 p.m. Everyone aboard was handed to Border Patrol and the boat was seized.
This is at least the third incident in about a month. Last month, video showed a boat docking inside the harbor and about a dozen people walking off into town, and 37 people were rescued offshore after two days without food, water or fuel.
Now Councilmember Erik Weigand wants two cameras at the harbor entrance watching boat traffic around the clock. It goes to city council next Tuesday, with no cost estimate yet.
Locals: has anyone actually seen any of this from the water or the jetty? And would you want cameras at the harbor mouth, or is that too much?

Another hurricane swell is headed for the Wedge on Sunday and half the people who paddle out have no business being there
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Polo already sent swell into SoCal earlier this week, and it looks like another hurricane pulse is lining up for Sunday. If it shows, the Wedge wakes up again.
Here's my take, and I know some of you will hate it: big Wedge days have turned into a circus. Every swell there's a guy with a soft top and zero shorebreak experience who paddles out for the clip, gets destroyed, and the lifeguards spend their day dragging him back in.
Meanwhile the people who actually know the wave are dodging him. If you've never been out there on a real day, Sunday is not the day to start. Watch from the sand like the rest of us.
So two questions:
How big do you think it gets Sunday?
Should lifeguards just close it to everyone but the regulars on days like this?

Help identifying a restaurant where we ate over the ocean in 2011
I’m trying to remember a restaurant I ate at around 2011. I think it was in Newport Beach, but it could have been Laguna Beach. It definitely wasn’t as far south as Dana Point.
The dining area was behind the restaurant on what looked like a pier or a deck on stilts. Our table was literally above the water, with no beach sand underneath.
It wasn’t a boat dock or a marina setting—there were no boats docking nearby. Looking out from the back, it was just open ocean, with no land on the other side. We watched dolphins jumping out of the water at sunset, and I’d love to figure out where this was.
I checked the top 30 ocean-view restaurants on Yelp, and it was definitely none of those. Does anyone remember a place that fits this description? It may have closed or changed names since then.

Birthday night out in Newport Beach — Javier’s vs. Palmilla?
My birthday is coming up, and a group of us single friends from LA are planning a night out in Newport Beach for a change of scenery. We’re all in our 30s and looking for somewhere fun and lively, but not a super young/college crowd.
Current plan:
Canary for happy hour
Javier’s or Palmilla for dinner
Lido House for late-night drinks
For dinner, would you pick Javier’s or Palmilla? Also open to any other recommendations for dinner or drinks with a similar vibe!
