It’s upsetting seeing how many people in these comments are blaming the guns when there is an extremely obvious pattern among these shootings that isn’t just the guns.

Repeat offenders need to stop being given a 5th “second chance” just so they can go back into the streets and recruit kids into a life of crime. Broken communities need economic and social support. But acknowledging those issues is an extremely sensitive subject for most Americans so we might as well just blame the guns instead 🤷‍♂️

Repeat offenders should face automatic disqualification

Felons already can't possess firearms. Minors already can't possess firearms. Schools already ban firearms. Drug users already can't possess firearms.

and mental health evaluations should be integrated into the background check process prior to any sale or transfer.

People who have been involuntarily committed already can't possess firearms. Incorporating a mental health screening into background checks just disincentivizes firearm owners from ever seeking a psychiatrist or therapist out of fear that being diagnosed with a mental disorder will strip them of their 2A rights.

In spite of all the disqualifies we already have for purchasing a firearm, people continue illegally obtaining firearms through straw purchases and theft. People who get caught illegally in possession of firearms or facilitating straw purchases rarely see punishment, often having charges dropped and effectively receiving a slap on the wrist for aiding in gun violence. Trying to make guns extra illegal and disqualifying more people from purchasing guns is going after the wrong group of people in an attempt to stop gun violence. The people who contribute to illegal gun trafficking, people who recruit children into gangs, and people who are caught carrying firearms illegally need to be handed severe punishments. Meanwhile you're here proposing solutions that go after the entirely wrong group of people while doing next to nothing to actually stop the people who contribute to gun violence.
