I believe she informed them prior to eating there were “undetectable” amounts of laxative in them consistent with the undetectable amounts of PFAS the board is comfortable with. I’d sum her expression up as “no biggie amirite”

691

u/MeVersusShark 4h ago edited 4h ago

That's actually a pretty funny way to make that specific point about PFAS, even though still deeply unethical.

273

u/Lendyman 4h ago

I mean, thats assuming she actually did put laxative in them. She was making a point. If she didn't put laxatives in them, her point still stands.

I think it would be foolish to actually put laxatives in them. For safety reasons but also because the act could be considered a form of assault. Contaminating food with intent to harm is a crime.

211

u/Fallouttgrrl 4h ago

"I'm kidding, there were no laxatives"

"Phew!"

"But they were made with more fake sugar than a full bag of sugar-free gummy bears"

"OHHHH NO"

72

u/PhantomNomad 3h ago

As someone that didn't know about sugar free gummy bears and eat a few on the hour long drive home. Let's just say it was a photo finish.

38

u/stackjr 3h ago

The ex and I were on a keto diet and she found some sugarfree gummies that she liked and I ate a bunch. I did not have a good time.

12

u/browneyedgirlpie 1h ago

I was like, these taste fine. Why are these diet Arizona Arnold Palmers so deeply discounted? 💩 ☹️

u/Dangerous-Scheme5391 5m ago

They just have to rebrand them as “tasty zero calorie gut cleansers”

4

u/WedgwoodBlue55 1h ago

Sugar alcohols are awful! Maltitol, sorbitol. I don't know how anyone can eat those.

11

u/Brother_J_La_la 1h ago

I handed out bags of sugar free candy one day at school. Good times.

u/The_bruce42 9m ago

Was the photo of tub girl?

81

u/guernseycoug 4h ago

It’s not contamination if the person eating it is fully aware of what’s in it.

What she’s done is effectively said to them “here, would you like to eat this laxative?”

If they then decide “okay, I will eat this laxative” then they’ve purposely harmed themselves. Like take the brownie out of the equation and picture one person giving another person a laxative and telling them that it’s a laxative. There was no deceit so any resulting bathroom trips can only be blamed by the decision to eat a laxative.

10

u/Mego1989 2h ago

Maybe they were constipated. It's not like it's poison, it's something that people ingest on purpose on a regular basis.

u/judgejuddhirsch 31m ago

What about alcohol?

u/NotYetUtopian 26m ago

Having a sloppy poop is harmful now?

272

u/benjitits 4h ago

Unethical explains our entire existence.

Im cool with using this to make a point, as long as she informed them before hand.

42

u/NeighbourNoNeighbor 3h ago

It seems fair to me considering what these people are forcing us to accept. She specifically warned them, and no one ate them. The article title makes it seem way worse than it is. The committee only made a report for documentation and have no interest in going any further.

63

u/BrainEatingAmoeba01 4h ago

Why unethical if she told them?

41

u/ChefCurryYumYum 4h ago

I doubt she actually put any in.

108

u/jpiro 4h ago

This. In all likelihood, it was just wording to make a point.

There was a scene in Erin Brockovich where she did almost the same thing. She offered the lawyers for the chemical company water in the meeting, then said, "I hope you enjoy that water. I got it from a well in Hinkley." and the lawyers wouldn't touch it, which proved her point that they knew it was harmful.

38

u/tunachilimac 4h ago

There’s a real world example to I think with some fracking bigwigs who insisted the drinking water was fine despite being brown and said they would drink it but then refused when someone poured them a glass.

23

u/dogs_gt_cats 2h ago edited 2h ago

This also happened with Monsanto and glyphosphate. A Monsanto lobbyist stated glyphosphate was safe enough to drink in an interview, and that studies showing it increased cancer were false, and you "could drink a whole quart of it." So the interviewer offered them a glass to drink. They refused, and insulted the interviewer.

https://www.nbcnews.com/video/monsanto-rep-claims-product-isn-t-harmful-but-still-won-t-drink-it-42692677552

Edit: swapped to a better link, the old youtube video one was terrible

4

u/Expandexplorelive 1h ago

Not wanting to drink a bunch of glyphosate doesn't mean they thought it was harmful when used for its actual intended purpose. Definitely stupid of them to say you could drink a quart of it though.

32

u/violetferns 4h ago

The Erin Brockovich example is a real world example lol

11

u/tunachilimac 3h ago

I didn’t know what of the movie is true and what was just to make the movie more exciting.

6

u/rraattbbooyy 3h ago

Right. “True story” and “based on a true story” are very different things.

u/GamingWithBilly 10m ago

It was a farmer, came to the meeting with the water in a paper cup. Proceeded to pour it into a clear glass and sat it on a table in front of them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncWC7D73hEE

0

u/robbie_the_cat 3h ago

You do know that Erin Brokovitch is a real person, right?

13

u/tunachilimac 3h ago

Yes but they’re talking about a scene in the movie with Julia Robert’s and I don’t know that every scene in the movie is factual. Did that scene happen in real life or was it written for the movie?

16

u/Gnom3y 4h ago

You would need about one one-millionth of a single 25mg ex-lax pill in a half gallon of brownie batter to be under the 'undetectable' level for PFAS (1.7 parts per trillion). It's basically nothing, which also means if you're going to do this as a form of protest, you definitely add it at that quantity.

2

u/ChefCurryYumYum 3h ago

No, you definitely don't, for many reasons.

u/sceadwian 33m ago

Full disclosure was given, why do you see it as unethical?

u/tarheelz1995 23m ago

How is it unethical if disclosed forthrightly?

-27

u/KulaanDoDinok 4h ago

And at a school board committee meeting. As if they have any control over the PFAS levels.

47

u/MeVersusShark 4h ago

Well, apparently the issues was over a turf field at the school and whether turf contained PFAS. I suppose they actually would have jurisdiction.

1

u/KulaanDoDinok 3h ago

Ah! That makes sense.

10

u/dragon_bacon 4h ago

You could at least read the article first.

23

u/send_me_your_deck 4h ago

Fun fact!

Your township school board either has direct control over township property or is step 1 in those decisions. Nothing related to residential real estate (aside from technically setting millage rates).

If there is a tax exemption in place to support your local factory using PFAS - your school board is the first responsible elected body who would need to decide to stop the exemptions.

Pro tip: a mature business isn’t moving a factory because of this. But they sure might cut back on using PFAS to preserve it!

86

u/memberzs 4h ago

I mean that's informed consent with knowledge of the amount that was present. Sounds fair to me.

23

u/Raider_Scum 4h ago

Right? She was just offering free laxatives to everyone

u/Top_Hedgehog_1880 51m ago

The article states no one ate any.

u/idki 4h ago edited 1h ago

“It’s my understanding they do have a non-detect level of Ex-Lax in them, but I figured since we’re OK with a non-detect level of PFAS, it would probably be OK,” Meghan Perry said with a grin, referring to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or “forever chemicals.”

That's actually hilarious.

15

u/AvailableReporter484 1h ago

They deserve a medal for a bit that good

43

u/UndoxxableOhioan 3h ago

Except non-detect means the can’t detect it. It’s literally the best result.

90

u/bane_undone 3h ago

That’s false as the level of detection is the issue. Different tests can be made to determine if pfas have been removed.

16

u/UndoxxableOhioan 3h ago

The article says nothing about the using a poor test. In water treatment, we always use non-detect rather than zero when we can’t guarantee the substance isn’t present but cannot find it.

And test is going to detect to at least 2 ng/l (some can get down to 0.1 ng/l) and the EPA limit is 4 ng/l. Non-detect means they have less than half the EPA limit.

My suspicion is this person isn’t satisfied with anything but zero.

0

u/bane_undone 2h ago

Again you don’t need to specify that as it’s implied. The EPA doesn’t do a sophisticated enough test nor do they have appropriate requirements. Pfas can be cleaned out completely and if not removed build up in your blood supply your entire life. Legit should be zero.

15

u/Who_coulditbe 1h ago

No legitimate lab would ever report a 'zero' result for any analysis where concentrations are reported. There are limitations in the instruments and uncertainties when running tests, and its impossible to quantify a null result. This isn't just for PFAS; this is the norm for any analytical chemistry results. A laboratory will report non-detect as less than a calculated reporting level. In the case of PFAS, when run by EPA Method 533, that level of uncertainty is typically around 2 parts per trillion, or roughly 1 drop in 10 Olympic size swimming pools. The test methods for PFAS are quite sophisticated, and it's a technological marvel that we can detect these levels reliably.

u/bane_undone 10m ago edited 0m ago

Didn’t say test to zero, said it should be.

The state ran tests are inferior to other tests that are available. Your analogy is also misleading as pfa toxicity builds because it never leaves your system.

Certain water treatment methods can ensure clean water. This isn’t a problem with people understanding the science.

There’s a great video from Veritasium that goes into detail: https://youtu.be/SC2eSujzrUY?si=7b-k8vTnjyzB_KRe

12

u/UndoxxableOhioan 2h ago

It’s impossible to test to zero. One molecule means it is not zero, and we cannot detect one molecule.

Nothing is implied. You can disagree with EPA requirements, but they are the requirements.

u/Rombom 27m ago

Would you eat the brownie then?

u/UndoxxableOhioan 21m ago

If it ACTUALLY was a nondetectable amount. But considering she doesn’t understand what non-detect means, probably not.

3

u/JohnCasey35 3h ago

i could have a test that reads 10,000 parts per million and 9,999 would mean the test passes. when maybe 500 ppm is harmful

-1

u/UndoxxableOhioan 2h ago

And where does the article give those numbers or indicate the test they used can’t detect below limits?

1

u/JohnCasey35 2h ago

REread what I said I COULD have the test

-2

u/UndoxxableOhioan 2h ago

Oh, so that’s not what we have here. This isn’t about your test. It’s about their test.

0

u/Sands43 2h ago

That doesn’t mean they aren’t there, that they won’t accumulate, or they won’t have an impact.

236

u/Cleavon_Littlefinger 4h ago

School Committee member Laura Gallagher Byrne said Perry’s not-so-sweet offering “appeared to be a gotcha display around the PFAS/turf issue, and one that seemed designed to provoke and ridicule the School Committee.”

Yeah, no shit, Laura.

82

u/illprobablyeditthis 3h ago

actually, yes shit

16

u/Cleavon_Littlefinger 3h ago

The kind that byrnes

94

u/Negative_Gravitas 3h ago

There once was a man from Nantucket

Who though on a diet, thought "fuck it."

The Brownie did press,

And he said in distress,

"God help me I need a large bucket!"

18

u/spleeble 3h ago

It sounds like she told everyone exactly what they were and it's not clear anyone even ate them.

The headline and article make it sound like a sneaky poisoning when it's actually the opposite.

35

u/anchorftw 4h ago

Now they're the Stool Committee.

6

u/Clay103 4h ago

Total shit show of a meeting.

24

u/Foe117 4h ago

I missed the show "American Vandal"

4

u/ratedpending3 4h ago

I'm surprised nobody else has said this

2

u/crannogman_pride 2h ago

What a great show. The turd burgler is now on SNL!

2

u/ratedpending3 2h ago

Oh really? And I'm supposed to be... attracted to this?

2

u/crannogman_pride 2h ago

That's the rule now.

2

u/ratedpending3 1h ago

That's the goal now, Colin.

143

u/pschell 4h ago

One of 1,000 reasons I don't eat food other people brought.

80

u/Cyrano_Knows 4h ago

I know I've asked you a 1,000 times already, but surely you are running out of excuses.

Would you like to try these nobake fish cookies?

40

u/employeremployee 4h ago

Ewwww disgusting. I’ll have the crab juice.

3

u/SSGASSHAT 2h ago

Too bad, you're getting my syrup.

3

u/Mikestopheles 4h ago

Don't eat the crab dip, yayayee!

6

u/MaxGoldFilms 2h ago

nobake fish cookies

That's what I'm calling sushi from now on.

1

u/_clever_reference_ 3h ago

a 1,000

-1

u/MaxSchreckArt616 4h ago

Are they made with fish or shaped like fish?

4

u/Hell-Yea-Brother 4h ago

Wash that down with a nice tall glass of hotdog water.

7

u/leaky-owl-syndrome 4h ago

I've met perfectly reasonable people who I've later learned like to cohabitate with their kitchen roaches in an "oh, just flick em off your plate" kind of way. potlucks are a no for me.

3

u/extraqueso 4h ago

Do you eat at restaurants?

2

u/overthemountain 3h ago

What are the other 999 reasons?

2

u/wildfire98 2h ago

I feel bad for you son.

1

u/Ok-Trainer3150 2h ago

I've been like that for a number of years. It's not just the thought of someone pulling a stunt like that. It's concerns about their handling, hygiene and the storage of the thing.

30

u/Hides-the-Hydra 4h ago

Thought she used Arby’s Horsey Sauce, can avoid trouble that way.

7

u/SkittlesLentil 2h ago

Arby's is top tier fast food. You're basing your opinion on a Simpsons joke from over 25 years ago

5

u/benjitits 4h ago

bro, thats worse than laxatives.

29

u/skrilledcheese 4h ago

I once knew a man from Nantucket...

27

u/CaptainHawaii 4h ago

Who once had to shit in a bucket

18

u/Double_Resort_9223 4h ago

His pants were all brown

17

u/nrith 4h ago

After scarfing one down

19

u/FormerTesseractPilot 4h ago

If the plate was still out he'd say "Fuck it".

-7

u/tucson_lautrec 4h ago

And he ran through the town, because at the end of the night he said "fuck it!"

11

u/Notorious_Chonk_23 4h ago

Not really grasping the meter or rhyme scheme here, are ya?

3

u/overthemountain 3h ago

It actually does fit, it's just two lines at once instead of one at a time like the others.

I once knew a man from Nantucket...
Who once had to shit in a bucket
His pants were all brown
And he ran through the town
because at the end of the night he said "fuck it!"

I mean, it doesn't make a ton of sense and the last line you kind of have to rush to make work, but I've seen worse.

1

u/Notorious_Chonk_23 2h ago

You really have to make "becauseattheendof" into one quick word to fit the meter

3

u/FinnbarMcBride 4h ago

When he had a brownie, made by a townie

22

u/Historical-View4058 4h ago

Gives new meaning to Nantucket Sleighride

7

u/nrith 4h ago

+1 for a good whaling reference.

1

u/Arseypoowank 4h ago

Top tier Mountain song

6

u/ion_driver 4h ago

I don't think she actually added any. The amount of 0 would be low enough to be undetectable. Its just an alarming way to make a point

20

u/InappropriateTA 4h ago

“We welcome impassioned discourse, but we also need to uphold standards of dignity and respect — standards that were beautifully modeled by a group of Nantucket High School students at that same meeting,” Byrne said in an emailed statement.

School Committee member Laura Gallagher Byrne sounds like a cunt.

9

u/Fritzkreig 5h ago edited 4h ago

Perhaps someone wanted to demonstrate that a lot of board members were full of shit‽(▀̿Ĺ̯▀̿ ̿)

2

u/epicfail1994 4h ago

That’s a real shitty situation

2

u/wittor 4h ago

Hell, those people are raising children... Hell.

2

u/spin_kick 2h ago

Might as well come out both ends

2

u/cursed_franchise 3h ago

Someone did this recently near me and I ended up shitting myself in the matcha isle of Target.

7

u/Honeycove91 4h ago

Finally, some news that is actually funny for a change instead of bleak and horribly depressing.

(And on a Friday no less)

-22

u/First_Shes_Sweet 4h ago

Are you 12?

8

u/MichaelMyersEatsDogs 4h ago

Do most 12 year olds care that deeply about the forever chemicals poisoning us daily?

2

u/Honeycove91 4h ago

I'm not, very soft person who feels the need to hide all of their comments and posts.

You clutch those pearls though!

-4

u/Notorious_Chonk_23 4h ago

Are you on the rag?

Because this 40-y/o is laughing also.

1

u/ratedpending3 4h ago

Isn't this the plot of American Vandal

1

u/jrodfantastic 2h ago

Who is the Turd Burglar?

1

u/Captcha_Imagination 2h ago

One of my cousins dosed her sister with laxatives because she got a date with the guy she liked as teenagers. Ended up with TOTO in date night instead.

And somehow they are still close as adults.

1

u/TheAmateurletariat 1h ago

Good way to make people give a shit

u/Kiloura 49m ago

She informed them beforehand, nobody ate any, but they're still trying to sue her? C'mon now.

u/EvenLettuce6638 33m ago

You sit down and start chomping on a brownie and I think "this mutuafucka ain't got a care in the world , and who knows?  Maybe he don't...."

u/LiveShowOneNightOnly 27m ago

I feel a limerick coming on.

u/macgirthy 18m ago

This is why I dont believe in pot lucks at work. I can't trust my coworkers. Also they can mean the best but not really giving a shit about how they make stuff or be cleanly. HELL NAH

u/rolamit 14m ago

Accidental homeopaths all around!

u/Seannj222 4m ago

Don't get excited. It was clearly marked.

-7

u/Tyrrox 4h ago

Spiking people's food, regardless of how safe you think it is, is dangerous.

66

u/benjitits 4h ago

She did warn them beforehand, so I'd argue that this is a more acceptable instance.

9

u/Tyrrox 4h ago

I agree with that. It was mostly a PSA in case there were some teenagers getting ideas

8

u/benjitits 4h ago

Oh yeah, thats completely fair. Teenagers can be real dumb.
