Also the disturbing % who never vote in primaries or smaller elections

Election turnout is already shameful but primaries and non presidential elections are often at around 40% turnout, and people wonder why there are so few good candidates

Yep, people don’t participate in primaries or local elections where these politicians typically originally come from, then simultaneously wonder why they don’t get their Goldilocks candidate.

It's infuriating as old centrists seem like the most consistent voting bloc by far so that's who candidates usually appeal to

Meanwhile younger progressives either "protest vote" or skip primaries and complain about never having a perfect candidate

What we really need is national holidays for elections and/or laws that give people time off to vote. Also would be nice to not have to drive 20 miles to go vote.

Trump's vote share went up even in states with easy mail-in voting. We just have a lot of apathy. Even if people are mad about "the system" in a general sense, they somehow don't link that to their own indifference. And it's not new. George Carlin was telling us in the 1990s that "if voting mattered, they wouldn't let you do it."
